The Service Department is responsible for servicing and installing various natural gas appliances (residential and commercial), setting and maintaining residential and light commercial meters, restoring gas service to customers, and responding to after-hours and emergency calls. What You Will Do: Assist in the installation of natural gas appliances, meters, and facilities in an efficient and safe manner while achieving excellent customer service. Use Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) to distribute and route work orders to computers mounted in company vehicles. Light gas pilots on natural gas residential and/or commercial appliances. Complete minor appliance repairs. Run customer fuel lines. Complete appropriate paperwork in writing and on the computer. Safely drive a company vehicle. Operator Qualifications involve written guidelines and requirements natural gas employees must follow to ensure the safe and responsible operation of natural gas pipelines. Required, annual Operator Qualification testing involves both written and hands-on components to ensure those who perform covered, safety-sensitive tasks on the natural gas system are trained, knowledgeable, and qualified. Who You Are: Trainee-Service (0 - 6 months experience) Completed high school or equivalent (i.e. GED) Possess a valid driver's license with a safe driving history. Ability to understand and follow safety and environmental policies, procedures, and protocols. Must have knowledge and skills with common hand and power tools. Effective communication skills for positive customer interactions are critical. Ability to work in enclosed areas such as crawl spaces, basements, and attics. Ability to work on elevated areas such as roofs and utilize ladders, scaffolding and lifts. Ability to adhere to safe working and defensive driving procedures. Willingness to work as a team member within a diverse team. Basic computer and internet navigation skills. Ability to serve as a natural gas emergency responder. Availability for overtime and after-hours, on-call work (including weekends and holidays, if needed). Must be willing and able to meet a 45-minute emergency response time from the geographical center of the Concord area. Emergency response time is a critical measure for the Company and candidates are required to consistently meet this requirement, including when on-call. This position will work closely with several TNC staff members and be supervised by our Community Outreach Manager. The 6-month position will involve working with TNC's Clinch Valley Program team to learn more about our work in Southwest Virginia and assist our staff with a variety of essential activities including: conservation easement and preserve monitoring, field-based stewardship on lands enrolled in our 23,000-acre Conservation Forestry program, and providing support to our community outreach and volunteer programs. The position will likely spend approximately 2/3 time in the field and 1/3 time in the office. All interns will dedicate a minimum of 5% of their time to professional development activities through STEP. The department oversees Government Operations such as building construction, purchasing and contracting for goods and services, maintaining facilities, managing state vehicles, acquiring and disposing of real property, and operating auxiliary services such as courier mail delivery and the sale of state and federal surplus property. Additionally, the department manages many of the state's advocacy programs that provide assistance and services to diverse segments of the state's population that have been traditionally underserved. Description of Work Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences Agency: Labor Division: Occupational Safety & Health Division Job Duties: The OSH Division enforces occupational safety and health laws and regulations in virtually all private and public sector businesses. This project will allow a student interested in occupational safety the opportunity to participate in hands-on workplace safety compliance inspection work and learn all aspects of the inspection and investigation process. Major Task to be Performed: Accompany trained, experienced safety professionals on compliance inspection assignments; become familiar with general industry and construction industry safety standards; participate in training classes; observe and participate in high profile case file review meetings; assist safety professionals with hazard recognition and assessments, preparing reports and investigating workplace complaints and accidents. Final Product or Outcome Anticipated: Multiple products including letters and certificates, hands on experience with the appointment process and an in-depth knowledge of NC government. Academic Majors Desired: Occupational safety; safety engineering; industrial management or technology; industrial or mechanical engineering; engineering technology; construction management. 2026 State of North Carolina Internship Period: Monday, May 18 - Friday, July 24, 2026 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies: Strong interest in workplace/occupational safety standards, politics and procedures; strong verbal and written communication skills; ideally enrolled as a rising senior in a program that focuses on occupational safety, safety engineering; industrial technology, construction management, etc.; strong desire for public service. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements: An applicant must be a permanent North Carolina resident attending a college, university, law school, community college or technical institute in North Carolina or a North Carolina resident attending an equivalent institution out of state. Applicants must carry a 2.5 or greater overall grade point average on a 4.0 scale. Applicant must be a high school graduate and at least 18 years old by January 1, 2026. Applicants must be continuing their education in the fall following their participation in the program. To qualify for a law internship, applicants must have completed at least one year of law school before the beginning of the internship, unless other majors are listed. Students having previously held paid internships with this program are not eligible to apply. Applicants must be willing and able to work full-time for the entire 10-week internship. Applicants must be able to provide legal proof of identity and work authorization within three working days of employment. This position will close at 11:59 p.m. the night before the end date.
