Trane company history timeline

1913

Trane Vapor Heating, a new kind of low-pressure steam heat, was introduced in 1913.

By 1913, the family had incorporated as The Trane Company.

1923

In 1923, Reuben invented the convector radiator that established the company’s reputation as an innovator.

1925

1925 Reuben Trane develops the convector radiator.

1938

In 1938, Trane changed the concept of air conditioning large buildings with the launch of Turbovac, the industry’s first hermetic, centrifugal refrigeration machine.

1950

The company expanded vertically, making its own reciprocating compressors since 1950.

1958

In 1958, Trane had acquired a minority stake in CEMAT of Epinal, France; it was later renamed Société Trane.

Until then, most of the home HVAC market in the United States was dominated by subsidiaries of industrial giants such as Borg-Warner, Chrysler, General Electric (GE), General Motors, and Westinghouse. Its sales of $81.6 million for 1958 were up 237 percent in ten years.

1959

Only 7 percent of homes built in 1959 included air conditioning.

1964

Trane built new plants after acquiring a controlling stake in 1964.

1975

Sales reached $427 million in 1975; net income was $15 million.

1978

Trane bought controls company Sentinel Electronics Corporation in 1978.

1979

By 1979, sales were up to $658 million, and the company's $250 million backlog had grown to $355 million.

1981

The Model CVHE CenTraVac®, which was evolved from the company's Turbovac, was a three-stage centrifugal water chiller introduced in 1981.

1982

Trane became a leader in residential air conditioning in 1982, when they acquired General Electric’s Central Air Conditioning Division.

1990

Responding to the rate of change will drive us into the next century." Sales were nearly $2 billion in 1990 in spite of a subdued market.

1995

1995 Company joins Chinese manufacturing joint ventures.

1996

Trane began offering a temporary cooling service in 1996.

2003

The fast growth there--sales rose more than 30 percent in 2003--was coming from newly affluent consumers, a government willing to upgrade public buildings, and foreigners investing in new properties, an executive told Air Conditioning, Heating & Refrigeration News.

2007

In 2007, American Standard Companies divided, allowing Trane to renew its business focus and leadership in integrated HVAC services and solutions.

2021

A total of 140 companies were evaluated in 2021 and 18% percent achieved the designation of National Preferred Partner.
