About Border Butterflies Project
Border Butterflies is a project anchored by the Black LGBTQIA Migrant Project, Transgender Law Center, Familia: Trans Queer Liberation Movement, and other Tijuana based organizations. The project aims to support LGBTQ+ asylum seekers at the US-Mexico border with legal, humanitarian, post-detention, and organizing support.
About the Position
The Director of Case Management will lead and expand the Border Butterflies Project's case management program, ensuring that LGBTQ+ asylum seekers across the United States and at the southern border receive effective, coordinated, and compassionate support. This role requires both strategic program development and hands-on case management.
With 300 active participants-ranging from light-touch support to intensive wraparound services-the Director will oversee a team of staff while also taking on cases directly, particularly when triage is needed or gaps arise. The ideal candidate is a trauma-informed leader who can balance staff supervision, burnout prevention, and boundary-setting with a deep commitment to participant care. The Director will design and implement strategies to scale services, improve risk assessment and harm reduction practices, and ensure responsive, participant-centered support.
Key Responsibilities
Program Leadership & Development
Build and expand the case management program to meet the evolving needs of LGBTQ+ asylum seekers across the United States and at the Southern border in Tijuana.
Design systems for triage, risk assessment, and harm reduction to prioritize and respond to acute and ongoing participant needs.
Develop and implement strategies for scaling services and improving wraparound care.
Staff Supervision & Support
Work with staff and volunteers to triage urgent participant needs, identify priorities, and coordinate timely responses.
Oversee staff caseloads to model best practices and remain grounded in service delivery.
Supervise, train, and mentor case management staff, ensuring high-quality, trauma-informed service delivery.
Support staff in maintaining healthy boundaries and adopting burnout-prevention practices.
Foster a collaborative, compassionate, and accountable team culture.
Provide direct case management support when staff capacity is exceeded or in complex cases.
Partnerships & Community Relationships
Cultivate and strengthen relationships with organizations across the country to connect participants to essential resources, including housing, food, healthcare, and legal services.
Serve as a key liaison between the Border Butterflies Project and external service providers.
Trauma-Informed Practice
Integrate trauma-informed care principles into all aspects of case management and staff supervision.
Implement organizational practices that prioritize participant dignity, agency, and safety.
Model and implement resilience and sustainability strategies for staff working with high-need populations.
Qualifications & Requirements
Previous Experience
Minimum 5-7 years of experience in case management, social work, or related field, including direct service with LGBTQ+ and/or migrant communities.
At least 3 years of supervisory or program leadership experience, ideally in a nonprofit or community-based setting.
Masters of Social Work required.

Position Summary

The Role
For this role, BLMP seeks a candidate with a community centered approach and a fundamental understanding of the strategies, values and goals of community organizing. The Director of Resource Mobilization will speak boldly on behalf of the organization and apply an organizing lens to mobilize support through philanthropic partnerships and financial resources, while also interrogating power dynamics also at play
What You Will Do
Fundraising Strategy: In partnership with BLMP's Co-Director Team, develop and execute comprehensive fundraising strategies to meet annual revenue targets and ensure the sustainability and growth of BLMP.
Donor Cultivation: Identify, cultivate, and steward relationships with individual donors, major donors, corporate partners, foundations, and government agencies.
Grant Writing and Management: Research and identify grant opportunities, write compelling grant proposals, and manage the grant application process from start to finish.
Events Management: Organize and oversee fundraising events, donor appreciation events, and other gatherings to engage the community and generate financial support.
Donor Communications: Develop persuasive fundraising materials, appeal letters, and communication campaigns to effectively convey BLMP's mission and impact.
Donor Database Management: Maintain accurate and up-to-date donor records, track donor interactions, and generate reports to monitor fundraising progress.
Collaboration: Manage Development staff, including development associate, and occasional contractors.
