Core Responsibilities
1. Design, Planning & Engineering
+ Architect packet-optical transport solutions with fiber route validation, power budgets, and OSNR margins
+ Conduct fiber characterization (OTDR, CD, PMD, splice loss, return loss) to validate optical paths
+ Engineer long-haul and metro DWDM/ROADM links using Ciena 6500 and photonic line systems
2. Implementation, Turn-Up & Migration
+ Deploy and test fiber spans using OTDR, OSA, PMD/CD analyzers
+ Lead SONET/TDM to OTN/IP migrations with comprehensive fiber health checks
+ Troubleshoot fiber impairments (CD, PMD, reflections, non-linear effects) impacting DWDM/OTN performance
+ Deploy 400G/800G coherent optics ensuring OSNR/CD/PMD thresholds are met
3. Documentation & Workflow
+ Manage service orders and circuit designs using MetaSolv or equivalent systems
+ Maintain fiber characterization records and historical performance data
+ Document MOPs, rollback plans, rack elevations, and post-change reports
+ Track maintenance window activities and verify post-implementation success

JOB OVERVIEW
As a TransportationEngineer, you'll work on exciting projects, including municipal roadways, roundabouts, trails, heavy highway, safety studies, green and complete street designs, and more for ODOT, LPA, and Non-LPA clients across Ohio. Your role will involve:

Key Job Duties of the Engineer:

Assist GNRC in the procurement and oversight of on-call engineering firms selected to help design projects being implemented through GNRC's quick build transportation improvement program;
Assist local governments in the management of their on-call engineering firms hired to facilitate project development through the TN Department of Transportation's local programs process;
Assist in the development of local and regional plans by 1) documenting and analyzing existing conditions and trends, 2) identifying and assessing best practices and tools, and 3) recommending policies, actions, or investment strategies tailored to address planning objectives;
Lead/assist in the development of maps and other data visualizations;
Present staff reports to elected officials, planning boards, stakeholder organizations, and the general public;
Provide guidance and/or coordinate with planning and engineering firms and local jurisdictions engaged in regional and corridor level planning studies and engineering analysis;
Build and strengthen partnerships with community-based organizations and advocates, universities and research institutions, business groups, local governments, public transit agencies, the TN Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration, Federal Transit Administration, among others; and
Participate in industry associations and continuing education opportunities to remain current on emerging and best practices related transportation planning.
Qualifications: The ideal candidate(s) will have experience in transportation planning or engineering within a state DOT, regional planning organization, transit agency, or local government setting and possess working knowledge of designing transportation improvement projects. Candidates with a track record of designing complete streets projects are preferred. A master's degree in engineering or a related field is required, along with at least two years of professional experience. A bachelor's degree and four years of relevant experience may be substituted for the master's degree. Foreign degrees and credentials will be considered.
Compensation: The minimum starting pay rate is dependent on experience and qualifications. GNRC offers exceptional health insurance benefits, a fully paid pension through the Tennessee Consolidated Retirement System (with no employee payroll deduction), and an optional a dollar for dollar match to a 401k, up to 3% of gross salary. What you'll be challenged to do:
As a Senior Highway Engineer, you will be challenged to shape transportation networks that strengthen communities and support daily life. In this capacity, the successful candidate will be responsible for the following:
Serve as the Lead Roadway Engineer on ODOT and Local transportation projects
Collaborate with project team members
Review roadway and other highway related designs, including Maintenance of Traffic plans (if interested and qualified)
Mentor junior engineering staff
Develop cost proposals
Develop specifications, cost estimates, and prepare final bid packages
Prepare reports required by the project development process
Advance into project management (if desired)
What you'll bring to our firm:
Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering is required
Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Ohio or the ability to become registered in 6-12 months
Minimum of 12 years of related highway design experience
Familiarity with AASHTO and OMUTCD standards
Prior design experience with Ohio Department of Transportation and/or Ohio Local projects
Hands on experience using CADD/Design Software (preferably OpenRoads) required
Strong written and oral communication skills
Compensation:
The salary range for this role is $130,000 - $170,000. Salary is dependent upon experience and geographic location.

Preparation of traffic impact studies and site access evaluations in accordance with guidelines established by municipalities and the Ohio Department of Transportation.

REQUIREMENTS
You have a B.S. in Civil Engineering.
You have a P.E. license.
You have DOT experience.
You have 10+ years of hands-on experience in highway/traffic engineering [geometric design, access/egress design, highway/roadway safety features (signing, striping, lighting, guardrail, barriers, clear zones, etc.), intersection design, signal design/maintenance, fieldwork analyses, field engineering studies, & incident/claims investigations.]
Some experience in highway/roadway maintenance, construction management, construction inspection, materials testing, residential or commercial land development, stormwater systems design, parking lot design, and/or crash investigation/reconstruction is a plus.
You can work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
You have excellent technical, analytical, writing, and communication skills.
You are willing to travel about 20% on average.
You have a valid driver's license and the ability to drive.
