TransUnion company history timeline

1968

They took their company, TRW, into the credit reporting industry in 1968 by acquiring a company called Credit Data.

1969

TransUnion’s credit business began with the purchase of Credit Bureau of Cook County (CBCC) in 1969.

1976

The company continued to see massive growth and rebranded as Equifax in 1976.

1981

Union Tank Car Company sold TransUnion to The Marmon Group in 1981.

In 1981, a Chicago-based holding company, The Marmon Group, acquired TransUnion for approximately $688 million.

1995

As TRW started to grow in the United States, a similar company called GUS was gaining popularity in the UK. In 1995, TRW put its business up for sale and GUS made an offer.

1996

Once GUS bought the company in 1996, it rebranded as Experian.

2007

2007 CIBIL Score, India’s first generic risk scoring model for banks and financial institutions, was introduced.

2010 Two firsts for the credit industry in India with the launch of:

2011 CIBIL TransUnion Score is made available to individual consumers.

2013

2013: In October 2013, TransUnion launched CreditVision, an evolution of the traditional credit score that is designed to better identify consumer trends, consumer behavior, and debt and repayment data.

In November 2013, TransUnion acquired TLO LLC, a company that leverages data in support of its investigative and risk management tools.

Cartwright joined the company in 2013 and served as our President of United States Information Services (USIS) prior to his appointment.

2014

In 2014, the company also acquired TLO, which collects data on people and companies from about one hundred thousand sources of data, for $154 million.

In 2014, a TransUnion analysis found that reporting rental payment information to credit bureaus can positively affect credit scores.

2015

2015: In January 2015, TransUnion revamped its brand and mantra with the goal of conveying its desire to empower consumers to make smarter decisions and live better lives.

2015: In June 2015, TransUnion becomes a publicly-traded company for the first time in its history.

In 2015, TransUnion acquired Trustev, a digital verification company specializing in online fraud for $21 million, minus debts.

2016

In 2016, it posted total revenue of about $1.7 billion.

2017

In September 2017, Equifax announced it had suffered a security breach.

In 2017, TransUnion acquired FactorTrust, a consumer reporting agency specializing in alternative credit data.

2018

In mid-April 2018, TransUnion announced it intended to buy UK-based CallCredit Information Group for $1.4 billion, subject to regulatory approval.

2020

In 2020, Experian had a data breach that impacted up to 24 million South African consumers and 800,000 businesses.

2021

In February 2021, Experian announced it was investigating the possibility that it was involved in a data breach with its Brazilian customers.

On 1 December, 2021 , TransUnion completed the acquisition of Neustar
