Travelzoo company history timeline

1998

From May 21, 1998, when the web site first engaged in actual business through the end of the year, the company generated sales of $84,000.

In October 1998, Travelzoo founder Ralph Bartel, a former print and television journalist, launched Travelzoo.com with an initial investment of $10,000.

1998 The company is incorporated in the Bahamas.

1999

Business grew at a steady clip in 1999 and Bartel was now joined by his brother, Holger Bartel, who took over as vice-president of sales and marketing.

By the end of 1999 Travelzoo had signed up more than 150 travel companies as advertisers, including American Express Vacations, American Airlines, Radisson Hotels, and Hilton, as well as local travel agents.

2000

In September 2000, Travelzoo published its first Top 20 and e-mailed one million United States members.

2001

2001 The United States entity is incorporated in Delaware.

2002

Next, in March 2002, shareholders, in effect Ralph Bartel, voted to merge Travelzoo Corporation and Travelzoo Inc., with the latter becoming the surviving entity.

2003

In addition to its Silicon Valley technical operation, Travelzoo established its corporate headquarters in midtown Manhattan, and then in May 2003 opened an office in Miami to better serve its important advertising clients in Florida, a key tourism state.

In December 2003, Travelzoo became publicly traded on the NASDAQ SmallCap Market under the ticker symbol "TZOO".

When 2003 ended, Travelzoo increased the number of subscribers to more than four million.

2004

2004 Company stock soars nearly 1,000 percent.

2005

Travelzoo opened a London office in April 2005 to do business in Europe.

2006

On March 31, 2006, Travelzoo announced that Forbes.com rated the Travelzoo Web site as one of the best Web sites for travel-related information and travel deals.

2006 An office is opened in Toronto.

2015

In October 2015, Travelzoo's CEO Chris Loughlin announced he would step down by the end of the year, to be succeeded temporarily by chairman Holger Bartel.

Travelzoo acquired Travelzoo Asia Pacific in 2015 to take advantage of the region's increased travel growth.

2018

Travel sales contributed 85% of total revenue in 2018.

Overall, Travel almost remained flat in the last two years at $94.4 million in 2018, driven by a decline in advertising spend in Travelzoo’s Asia-Pacific region.

2019

The company’s Travel business, which makes revenues by listing fees paid by travel businesses (hotels, airlines, travel companies) to advertise their offers, is expected to contribute $95 million to Travelzoo’s 2019 revenues, making up 84% of the company’s $114 million in revenues for 2019.

2020

To that end, the company has launched a project called Asia-Pacific 2020.

Revenue from Travel to increase 3% (about $3.1 million) in the next two years, with its share of Total Revenue expected to be about 83% by 2020
