Trend Micro company history timeline

1988

In 1988, Trend Micro was co-founded by Steve Chang, Jenny Chang, and Eva Chen to develop antivirus software—but it didn’t stop there.

1992

A Japanese software firm was taken over by Trend Micro in 1992 to establish device headquarters in Japan.

1993

In 1993, Novell began bundling the product with its network operating system.

1998

Trend Micro was listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 1998 under the ticker 4704.

1999

The company began trading on the United States-based NASDAQ stock exchange in July 1999.

2004

In 2004, MSN Hotmail started using appropriate Trend Micro software to help scan attachments and email messages for potential imbedded viruses.

In 2004, founding chief executive officer Steve Chang decided to split the responsibilities of CEO and chairman of the company.

2005

Company co-founder Eva Chen succeeded Chang as chief executive officer of Trend Micro in January 2005.

In June 2005 Trend Micro acquired Kelkea, a San Jose, California-based developer of antispam software.

2006

In 2006, Trend Micro software has become further useful and attractive with the launch and marketing of the IWSA or the Interscan Web Security Appliance.

2008

Trend Micro acquired Identum in February 2008 for an undisclosed sum.

The company launched its personal security platform Trend Micro Smart Protection Network in 2008 and updated it with Big Data Analytics later to identify and provide protection to clients from all sorts of online threats.

2009

In April 2009, Trend Micro acquired Ottawa, Ontario Canada-based Third Brigade for an undisclosed sum.

2010

Trend Micro acquired Leeds, England based humyo in June 2010 for an undisclosed sum. humyo provided cloud-based data storage and synchronization services to small businesses and individuals.

2011

On 19 May 2011, the United States Patent and Trademark Office issued a Final Rejection in the reexamination of Trend Micro's United States patent 5,623,600.

2012

In June 2012, Trend Micro acquired Marlborough, Massachusetts-based Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificate provider AffirmTrust for an undisclosed sum.

2014

In 2014, Trend Micro eventually relocated headquarters to Texas and began a partnership with Interpol.

Also in 2014, Trend Micro expanded its Cloud App Security to protect with Microsoft Office 365 from threats not caught by native Microsoft Security.

2015

In October 2015, Trend Micro reached an agreement to buy TippingPoint, a network and software security developer from HP Inc. for $300 million.

Simply Security won the best Cloud Security Blogs 2015 award for its highly relevant top-of-the-line security tips to executives and small businesses this year.

2016

By 2016, the Cloud App Security software was expanded to cover Box, Dropbox and Google Drive.

2017

In November 2017, Trend Micro acquired IMMUNIO, adding new capabilities for hybrid cloud security that fit neatly into the DevOps life cycle.

In December 2017, Trend partnered with Telco Systems to develop a virtual network cybersecurity platform combining Trend's Virtual Network Function Suite with Telco's NFVTime software.

2018

In September 2018 Trend Micro and HITRUST announced a partnership to launch a new center which provides advanced cyber risk management.

In November 2018 Trend Micro and Moxa Inc., announced the formation of a joint-venture corporation—TXOne Networks—which will focus on the security needs present in the Industrial Internet of Things (IoT) environments.

The report revealed Trend Micro achieved a market share lead of 35.5% , almost triple its nearest competitor, in 2018.

2019

Trend Micro, a global leader in cybersecurity solutions, announced earnings results for the fourth quarter as well as its annual results of fiscal year 2019, ending December 31, 2019.

In Q4 2019, Trend Micro delivered the strongest quarter in the company’s history thanks to growth from all regions globally and across our product portfolio.

These results build upon Trend Micro’s strong momentum from Q3 2019, further demonstrating its leadership in protecting organizations adopting cloud environments.

Shortly after it was announced that Trend Micro received the highest score in the current offering and strategy categories, and among the second highest scores in the market presence category, in The Forrester Wave: Cloud Workload Security, Q4 2019.

2020

Based on information currently available to the company, consolidated net sales for the year ending December 31, 2020 is expected to be 174,200 million Yen (or US $1,598 million, based on an exchange rate of 109 JPY = 1 USD).

In its 2020 predictions report “The New Norm”, Trend Micro stated that organizations will face a growing risk from their cloud and the supply chain.

In addition, Trend Micro deepened its annual sponsorship with Girls in Tech by announcing a global cybersecurity classroom program slated for 2020.
