Trevecca Nazarene University company history timeline

1901

Founded in 1901, Trevecca is committed to holistic education, encouraging students to grow intellectually, socially, emotionally, physically and spiritually.

1901: The Reverend J. O. McClurkan, a Cumberland Presbyterian minister, began teaching a small group of parishioners who wanted to be more effective Christian workers.

1911

1911: The curriculum was enlarged and the name changed to Trevecca College, a name taken from an institution started in Wales in 1768 during the Wesleyan revival.

1914

The school was located in downtown Nashville until 1914, when it was moved to East Nashville on Gallatin Road.

1917

1917: Trevecca became an official college of the Church of the Nazarene.

1932

Shortly after it had become a Nazarene institution, it absorbed the Southeastern Nazarene College of Georgia but still found itself in bankruptcy and forced to sell its campus by 1932.

1934

After occupying a temporary space on the former campus of the defunct Walden University on White's Creek, it was unable to buy the property and relocated to the Nashville First Church of the Nazarene, taking on the name Trevecca Nazarene College (TNC) in 1934.

1935

1935: Trevecca was established at its present location on Murfreesboro Road in southeast Nashville.

1942

1942: Trevecca graduated its first four-year class.

1969

Each college or university is also bound by a gentlemen's agreement not to actively recruit outside its respective "educational region." TNU has been accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools since 1969.

1995

1995: The Board of Trustees voted to change the name of Trevecca Nazarene College to Trevecca Nazarene University.

2007

2007: A second doctorate was added, the EdD in clinical counseling.

2011

TNU discontinued competing in the NAIA and TSAC conferences following the 2011-12 school year.

2011: Trevecca offered its first PhD after the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools approved making the EdD in clinical counseling a PhD.

2013

The freshman retention rate (freshman who continue their education at Trevecca after the first year) was 76 percent as of 2013.

2015

2015: Formed the School of Graduate and Continuing Studies.

2017

On March 24, 2017, Trevecca announced a partnership with Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy, Massachusetts.

2018

In March 2018, the proposed merger was called off.
