Established in 1998, Trident University International was the first 100% online university to gain institutional accreditation from WSCUC. Trident has a specially designed learning model unique in online education.
Founded in 1998, it has its headquarters in Cypress, California.
In January 2001, Perdoceo Education Corporation (PEC), formerly Career Education Corporation (CEC), acquired the University.
Touro University International was initially accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). Touro College, including the Touro University International branch campus, was subsequently re-accredited by MSCHE in 2004.
In June 2009, the AIU Buckhead and the AIU Dunwoody campuses combined to become AIU Atlanta.
In June 2011, the WSCUC Commission received information that Trident awarded baccalaureate degrees to students who had not fulfilled the university's general education (GE) requirements.
The former C.A. Brown High School was named one of five sites to receive a Civil Rights Historic Marker by The Preservation Society of Charleston in 2012.
In March 2019, Career Education Corporation entered into an agreement to acquire Trident University International for $35 – 44 million from Summit Partners and merged this acquisition into Career Education Corporation's American InterContinental University as a branch campus.
