is located at Mount Carmel East Monday through Thursday (10 Hour Shifts) The **Certified Pharmacy Tech** , will assist the pharmacist in assuring timely and accurate provision of medications to patients. Routine technician functions are performed under the direct supervision of a pharmacist. These functions may include unit dose dispensing, intravenous admixing, inventory control, record keeping and billing, and use of equipment and automated technology.

**What you will do:**
+ Assists in the filling of orders/ prescriptions
+ Prepares intravenous admixtures including chemotherapy; using aseptic technique in compliance with regulatory standards
+ Prepares and restocks medications for automated dispensing cabinets Conducts maintenance on automated dispensing cabinets; Resolves issues/errors (i.e. misfills; drawer recovery)
+ Assists in inventory control by verifying and putting away orders by the end of the shift each day; assures proper stock rotation, reviews stock for proper storage and current expiration dates, and identifies drugs and non-drug stocks needing to be reordered;
+ Prepares sterile products; properly labels medications and maintains records as required by department Policy and Procedures and state and federal law
+ Assists the department with proper billing of patients and other units

Purpose of Position:
Under the direct supervision of a licensed Pharmacist, performs work of a pharmacy technician, in accordance with Article 137 of the Education Law, specifically Article137-A, which details the tasks permitted for a licensed pharmacy technician and an unlicensed pharmacy technician. Ensures patient safety, optimal utilization of resources, service delivery and compliance with NYC Health + Hospitals, health care setting, and all other relevant regulatory policies and standards of care to improve outcomes and patient experience.
Examples of Tasks and Responsibilities:
1. Validates patient identity and screens prescriptions for completeness, formulary/restriction and payment status, prior to processing.
2. Receives written or electronically transmitted prescriptions, types prescription labels and affixes labels on containers.
3. Accurately keys and retrieves prescription data from a computer-generated file for review by a pharmacist.
4. Obtains drugs from stock and returns them to stock.
5. Restocks automated dispensing cabinets.
6. Gets prescription files and other manual records from storage and locates prescriptions.
7. Counts dosage units of drugs and places unit doses in appropriate containers for dispensing.
8. Prepares manual records of dispensing for the signature or initials of the pharmacist.
9. Handles or delivers completed prescriptions to the patient or the person authorized to act on behalf of the patient and advises of the availability of counseling to be conducted by the licensed pharmacist or pharmacy intern.
10. Obtains data for determining prescription cost and coverage.
11. Performs pharmacy-related clerical duties.
12. Attends and/or participates in staff departmental and interdisciplinary meetings and training, as required.
13. Performs other related functions, as directed by the pharmacist.
Those who are licensed to practice as a Registered Pharmacy Technician by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) may perform the following functions:
1. Assists the Pharmacist, as directed, in compounding ("compounding" means the combining, admixing, mixing, diluting, pooling, reconstituting, or otherwise altering of a drug or bulk drug substance to create a drug), preparing, labeling or dispensing of compounding drugs used to fill valid prescriptions or medication orders or in compounding, preparing, and labeling in anticipation of a valid prescription or medication order for a patient.

Medication Distribution ‐

* Bulk Dispense‐ Must fill multiple patient specific medications in accordance with department procedure.
* Transportation‐ bulk fill, first dose, and missing doses will be delivered securely to the appropriate units, while practicing appropriate procedure to ensure confidentiality for all patients.
* Missing Doses‐ upon request, must properly generate label, fill and have checked by a pharmacist, then dispense to the appropriate floor or unit.
* Product Preparation‐ must properly prepare, measure, count, medications including compound ointments, creams, oral solutions, oral solids, IV, etc.
(ADC) Automatic Dispensing Cabinet
* User‐ must be capable of accurately adding new users to the ADC system.
* Product‐ must properly load ADC with correct medications after medication is checked by a pharmacist. Monitor par levels and increase or decrease as needed.
* Reports‐ must be able to generate needed reports to fill, track, and identify/report all discrepancies.
* Minor Maintenance‐ must trouble shoot minor problems with ADC.
* Restock‐ must accurately fill medication, fluids and stock outs as needed.
* Recall‐ must assist the pharmacist and inventory specialist in retrieving recalled medications.
* Controlled Substances‐ Must follow all policies, procedures, and applicable laws with controlled substance medications.
IV Admixture
* Aseptic technique‐ Demonstrate knowledge of aseptic technique including; proper hand washing and proper use of IV Room attire. Understand Joint Commission, hospital, and departmental policies and procedures. Must complete an aseptic technique competency to show compliance with USP standards, conducted by supervisor or Lead Pharmacy Technician.
* Small volume‐ Demonstrate knowledge of preparing small volume admixtures
* Specialty solutions‐ Demonstrate knowledge of preparing epidural, intrathecal, intravenous, intramuscular, sterile syringes and chemotherapy (when applicable)
* Syringes‐ Demonstrate knowledge of preparing neonatal syringes (when applicable)

* Room cleaning ‐ Demonstrate knowledge of policies and procedures regarding maintaining clean room environment.
