Trinity International University, in Deerfield, is a private, four-year liberal arts college and seminary founded in 1897 in the evangelical Christian tradition.
Trinity International University traces its roots to 1897 when the Swedish Evangelical Free Church began a ten-week Bible course in the basement of a Chicago church.
In 1910, the department withdrew from the seminary and established the Norwegian-Danish Bible Institute and Academy, which was located first in Rushford, Minnesota, and then later in Minneapolis with the name Trinity Seminary and Bible Institute.
Doris Eckblad (pictured left), a Free Church missionary serving in Hong Kong, was enrolled in Trinity’s first seminary program in 1947.
The college and seminary separated in 1974, when the college also severed its ties to the Evangelical Free Church.
In 1992, the university acquired Miami Christian College, which became a branch location of the college, named Trinity College at Miami.
In 1992 the college established a regional center in Davie, Florida, where the former Miami Christian College became Trinity College at Miami.
These associations were restored 10 years later, and in 1993 Trinity established a branch campus in Florida at the former Miami Christian College.
In 1995, Trinity College, Trinity College at Miami, and Trinity Evangelical Divinity School were united to form Trinity International University.
In 1997 the first class entered Trinity Graduate School.
Trinity Law School, located in Santa Ana, California, incorporated into Trinity International University in January 1998.
The traditional undergraduate program in Miami closed in 2000 and the site has been renamed Trinity International University–Florida.
In 2002 the College of Arts and Sciences was renamed Trinity College.
In 2006, TIU received The Robert and Susan Andringa Award for Advancing Racial Harmony, a token of the progress it had made in racial diversity and reconciliation on campus
