What percentage of a pay raise did you get to relocate from Baltimore to San Fran?

I moved from Manhattan, actually, which is one of the few places that is comparable to SF in terms of cost of living. I did have to get a car, though, which has it's perks and pitfalls.

I know you spent a lot more time at 2k and probably have more stories to pull from there, but... What's something you liked more about working at 2k than Trion, and what's something you like more about working at Trion than 2k? :) Also, some day I shall acquire a corgi. How does Pancake feel about stumpy-dog meetups? :D

Why hello there reddit poster who I am sure I do not know at all! Thing about 2K that was rad: I moved across the country with 2K, and that was really rough. I never wanted to live in California (actually I always said this place was going to fall into the ocean and still believe that. Eff earthquakes) but I really wanted to keep working at 2K, so I moved, and that brought me together with the team and made us a family in a way that I don't think most companies have. We went through some rough times together and I loved them like brothers and sisters and aunts and uncles. Now, I mean, I spent 6 years with them, so that's not something that can be replaced in just a couple months, but I think also the stresses we went through together made that bond so crazily strong. Trion, though, embraces community in a way I love and respect - it's the main reason I came to work here. In the interview, I knew that this was the kind of environment and mind set that I wanted to be in. It was a long interview, too, and that should be completely draining but it wasn't. (I think that also shows how much I like my job and like to talk about it, but I guess this AMA shows that too.) I also really love RIFT and now I have all the cool RIFT stuff on my account. Since I was one of those crazy people that stalked you at PAX to get limited codes, that means more to me than it should. 2K wins in the category of pets, though: I got to bring Pancake to the office. But you and me, random reddit poster, maybe if we get together, with our dachshund and corgi powers combined... I think we could find a way to make Trion champion this, too.

How did you transition from 2k to Trion Worlds so quickly? I remember the Civilization IV thread and at that time you were still with 2k and then suddenly a week later you're in TW. What and how did that happen?

I had been at 2K Games for six years, so changing jobs is something that happens - but as for why it seemed sudden, that's probably because I kept it quiet. I'm not a fan of huge exits, so on my last day I made a forum post and a blog post to say good bye and then when I started at Trion, I made a "hey, here's where I am now" tweet and that was that. I'm really proud of what I built at 2K and love their games and the people there (I'm also fiercely proud of the team I built and what they've done since I left) so making my departure a big deal at all seemed weird to me. If you are asking why I didn't take time off between gigs, that's because I'm insane. ;-)

What's it like being a woman in the video game industry?

That's a complex question and I don't think it's fair for me to say what it is like and have you guys think my experience is anything like other women - but for me, I've been gaming since I was a kid and have grown up in gaming culture. Because of that, I think it's been easier for me than perhaps others. I also have been on the internet for ages and ages and working in community specifically for years, so I have a thick skin and a good sense of humor. And over the years, far more women have started sitting in meetings and being on teams with me, so me being a woman is less and less of an oddity. I honestly don't think about being a woman much. It doesn't change how I do my job or how people work with me and when I interact with the public I take the same approach: it's a non issue. Treat it that way and everyone moves on and focuses on the good stuff.
