Truliant Federal Credit Union history

It became North Carolina Works Federal Credit Union in 1954, adopting the 'Works' name given to Western Electric's factory network.

Membership at North Carolina Works Federal Credit Union in 1962 grew to more than 8,000 members, as Western Electric added jobs and the “branches” in its facilities to serve members.

By 1968, it was the 96th largest federal credit union in the United States.

By 1975, North Carolina Works Federal Credit Union was the 42nd largest federal credit union in the United States Nearing the end of its third decade, it now had five locations in Western Electric facilities – with the main office at the Lexington Road plant – and twenty employees.

In 1983, new administrative offices and its first branch outside of a Western Electric facility opened on Waughtown Street.

Reflecting this change, in 1984, North Carolina Works Federal Credit Union became AT&T Family Federal Credit Union.

By 1988, AT&T Family Federal Credit Union had 11 locations, $212 million in assets, 46,000 members, and 40 SEG groups to broaden its membership base.

By 1999, Truliant had $800 million in assets, and served more than 550 SEG group business partners.

By 2000, with membership at about 163,000 members, it opened more branches in South Carolina and Virginia.

In 2004, it merged with Victory Masonic Credit Union, the oldest historically African American credit union in North Carolina, and later opened branch for Victory members in a developing area of downtown Winston-Salem, N.C.

Built in 2005 at our Winston-Salem, N.C. headquarters, Truliant’s obelisk (picture, top left) is a re-creation of a historic structure mimicking the sun’s rays.

In 2007, Truliant's Victory branch opened in a developing area of downtown Winston-Salem.

In 2008, it opened a second location in Greensboro, North Carolina.

In 2010, Truliant began implementing new Small Business Administration programs and began offering no-cost credit reviews to help members understand their complete financial picture.

In April 2011, it launched an iPhone mobile banking app.

In 2014, the credit union began adding the first of ten new locations in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg region of North Carolina.

The credit union also announced plans to open ten branches in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg region by the end of 2016, which will bring its total branch count to 33.
