She was the great-granddaughter of Kamehameha I, the warrior chief who united the Hawaiian islands under his rule in 1810.

1822

Charles Reed Bishop Born January 25, 1822 in Glens Falls, New York, Charles Reed Bishop grew up on his grandfather’s 120-acre farm learning to care for sheep, cattle and horses and repairing wagons, buggies and stage coaches.

1831

Early Years Pauahi Paki was born December 19, 1831 in Honolulu, Hawaii, to high chiefs Abner Paki and Laura Konia Paki.

1858

In 1858 he founded Bishop and Company, which is now First Hawaiian Bank, the oldest and largest bank in the state.

1883

When Pauahi wrote her will in 1883, only 44,000 Hawaiians remained.

1884

Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, who died in 1884, was the last of the Kamehameha line.

1889

Charles also founded the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum in 1889 as an enduring memorial to his wife.

1951

An example by the estate says one lot was valued at $10,000 in 1951 when the house was built on it.

1960

The average home price in Honolulu in April was $138,000. ''Since 1960, the estate has put its big tracts in the hands of single developers who built and parceled out homes at a rate that would keep the prices high.''

1979

In 1979, when political pressure forced the estate to begin selling residential leaseholds to the homeowners, public criticism of the money the commissions would bring the trustees caused them to waive their share.

1982

The first condemnation trial was held in 1982, and the jury set sale prices far below what the estate had asked.
