Every year, Emerald Youth serves more than 3,000 children, teens and young adults in the heart of Knoxville through faith, learning and health programs. Why do we need tutors? Each year, students in our afterschool programs take the MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) Assessment to determine their academic strengths and needs. Emerald Youth strives to meet students' learning needs and help address learning gaps. This past school year, many of our students who were paired with tutors achieved greater academic growth, which is why we need you! While with their tutor, students would be able to work on specific reading and math skills with resources and content catered to their individual levels. This individualized instruction has great potential to help students make significant progress towards their learning goals and close the learning gap, helping them have the skills to be more successful and empowered. If hired, where would I work? Tutors would be placed at one of EY's JustLead program sites. EY's JustLead ministry is implemented through a network of more than 18 churches and faith-based organizations (FBOs) to raise up a large number of urban youth to love Jesus Christ and become effective leaders who help renew their communities. Structured and meaningful activities (i.e. academics, health, service-learning, discipleship, etc.) take place with young people at a church and FBO to achieve this holistic vision. What will I do? Tutors will work with students on reading and math goals, based on student needs and grade level. Tutoring in the elementary level will have a focus on reading. Tutoring at the middle school level will have a focus on math. Tutors will receive curriculum and resources to support their students, and training will be provided on how to utilize the curriculum. Tutoring resources and curriculum will be provided to tutors. What are the hours? Tutors will work 8-10 hours per week during our afterschool program hours of 3:00 - 6:00. Tutors should be able to work at least 3 or 4 days each week for 2-3 hours per day. Exact days and schedule per week will be determined based on candidate availability. Tutoring schedules with be aligned with site location schedules and student availability/needs. What age group would I work with? Tutors will be placed with 3 to 6 students attending elementary and/or middle school. This past school year, many of our students who were paired with tutors achieved greater academic growth, which is why we need you! While with their tutor, students would be able to work on specific reading and math skills with resources and content catered to their individual levels. This individualized instruction has great potential to help students make significant progress towards their learning goals and close the learning gap, helping them have the skills to be more successful and empowered. If hired, where would I work? Tutors would be placed at one of EYs JustLead program sites. EYs JustLead ministry is implemented through a network of more than 18 churches and faith-based organizations (FBOs) to raise up a large number of urban youth to love Jesus Christ and become effective leaders who help renew their communities.
