Job Description
Uncommon High School Spanish teachers work in grade level and content teams to develop students who are global citizens. Our teachers become experts in their course content, and have a keen sense of how to motivate and inspire high school students. Communicating in Spanish is at the heart of all classes. Spanish teachers use a variety of instructional strategies to create an environment where students feel safe expressing themselves in a new language. At the conclusion of high school, students are prepared for academic autonomy and college preparatory work.
Responsibilities:
1. Instruction
You'll build students' bilingual skills and enhance their understanding of the Spanish language using a curriculum that prepares them for Advanced Placement (AP) and collegiate level coursework.
You'll help students gain confidence in navigating print and audio authentic sources.
You'll teach students how to build and enhance their foreign language skills--reading, writing, speaking and listening.
You'll cultivate students' cultural awareness by helping them learn a new language.
You'll share your passion for the Spanish language to build a community of students who are confident in speaking Spanish.

Required Experience:

Prior to the start of employment, you must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Certification is not required to be hired at Uncommon, but you do need to meet NY state certification eligibility requirements. To meet these requirements, you must enroll in a teacher preparation program and maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher during your employment with us if you do not have a degree in education. Uncommon Schools teachers are required to become certified in the state of New York within a reasonable period after beginning employment.

Schedule Requirements
Part-time
Regular schedule is typically 1:30 PM to 6:00 PM, with earlier start times for half days and full-day availability during school vacations
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Plan and implement engaging, developmentally appropriate activities for school-age children
Supervise children at all times to ensure safety and adherence to program policies
Cultivate a positive, inclusive, and respectful classroom and group environment
Promote children's social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development
Implement positive behavior management strategies
Maintain accurate attendance records, incident reports, and required documentation
Ensure safe arrival and departure procedures
Collaborate with program staff, families, and administrators to support a cohesive and professional learning environment
Attend required trainings, meetings, and professional development sessions
Comply with all OCFS licensing regulations and promptly report concerns or suspected violations
Physical Demands
Ability to actively supervise and interact with children in indoor and outdoor environments
Ability to lift up to 15 lbs frequently and 50 lbs occasionally
Ability to stand, walk, bend, squat, kneel, and sit on child-sized furniture for extended periods
Ambulatory ability to move across playgrounds, fields, and recreational facilities
Work Environment
Indoor classroom and multipurpose facilities
Outdoor play spaces and athletic fields
Gymnasium and pool, where applicable
Exposure to varying weather conditions during outdoor programming
Education and Experience Requirements
Associate's degree in Child Development, Elementary Education, Physical Education, Recreation, or a related field or High School Diploma or equivalent and two years of direct experience working with children under 13 years of age
Current CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications preferred
