2011

The first streamer on Twitch to gain a subscriber button was Sean Plott, also known as Day9tv, in April 2011.

2011: Twitch introduces its Partner Program, where content creators get a share of the advertising revenue that their streams generate.

Interestingly, the platform wouldn’t be known officially as Twitch until 2011.

2012

In 2012, a more distinctive wordmark replaced the live streaming video platform’s brand identity.

Twitch changed its name in 2012, removing the part associated with TV. Twitch is now resourcefully centered around collaborative processes executed in real-time, providing customers with the ability to view and take part in gaming.

By the time it had been in operation for a year, in 2012, it had grown to boast over 20 million unique visitors per month.

2013

2013: Hitbox.tv, a live streaming service like Twitch is launched.

2014

The site began to take off in February 2014 when a stream called “Twitch Plays Pokemon” went viral.

Twitch.tv was purchased by Amazon on August 25, 2014, for $970 million.

2014: Justin.tv Inc., Twitch’s parent company, is rebranded Twitch Interactive, signifying the raised status of Twitch as the main business of the company.

2015

He started integrating politics into his streams during the 2015 presidential primaries.

2016

2016: Twitch introduces a new feature known as “Friends.”

In 2016, he was a semi-pro gamer working at a fast food restaurant.

In 2016, Twitch creating the “cheering” method, which allowed users to purchase Bits (click here to learn how to get them for free) to donate them to their favorite streamer.

2017

In 2017, he struck gold when he began streaming himself playing Fortnite.

2018

He has 226 million views in 2018 alone, making him the most popular streamer on the site.

According to Newzoo, the video game industry raked in an estimated $138 billion in 2018.

2019

The updated design was done by Collins Studio and was introduced in late September 2019.

2020

By 2020, Twitch was the one-stop-shop for video game content streaming online, boasting more than 9.7 million active streamers every month.

2021

Amazon still owns Twitch in 2021 as one of their many subsidiaries, and Emmett Shear is the only remaining member of Twitch’s founders still involved in managing the streaming service.

In 2021, Twitch now hosts around 9.5 million streamers per month, and this number is still steadily increasing.
