U.S. Cellular company history timeline

1983

No longer able to support its growing activities in the cellular industry by itself, TDS created a separate subsidiary called United States Cellular Corporation (USCC). The new company began operations on December 23, 1983, with Rudy Hornacek, a TDS executive, as its president.

In 1983 the company was founded as United States Cellular Corporation--the cellular communications division of Telephone and Data Systems, Inc. (TDS), an independent telephone holding company based in Chicago.

1984

In October 1984, before the FCC formally granted the licenses, USCC began to assemble its management team.

1985

By March 1985 the senior management of TDS had become convinced that the cellular industry was poised for tremendous growth.

1986

In addition to the two MSAs USCC operated in 1986, the company was a minority partner in an additional nine.

1987

By 1987 USCC had been recognized as a formidable player in the cellular communications industry.

1988

By December 1988, USCC was active in 31 MSAs, including Wichita, Atlantic City, and Columbia, Missouri.

1993

1993: USCC reports its first profit.

1995

By 1995, USCC had over 100 such retail outlets, from which it derived 24 percent of its sales.

1997

Moreover, USCC strove to lower per unit costs, and began a digital conversion plan in 1997.

1999

In May 1999, USCC changed its name to United States Cellular and debuted a stylish new logo.

2005

In 2005, United Wireless, with more towers and better coverage than any other provider in Southwest Kansas, began bringing the latest technology to customers, including today’s gold-standard 4G LTE coverage.

2006

For the 19th time since 2006 United States Cellular awarded “Highest Wireless Network Quality Performance in the North Central Region” by J.D. Power.

2010

TEAM Technologies, acquired in 2010, becomes part of Vital Support Systems.

2011

United States Cellular and TDS Telecom are named J.D. Power and Associates 2011 Customer Service Champions.

2013

United States Cellular announces that it will begin offering Apple products later in 2013.
