Uber has been changing the way we move around the world. From getting to work, to how you get your food delivered to you. The company is defining the future of mobility. But it didn't get there by itself. It had some help from a team of optimists and doers who are motivated to tackle tough challenges. At Uber, they learn from their experiences.

"Uber has always been about transformation. Starting with transforming urban transportation, today Uber is transforming our cities with new ways to eat and to move, letting people live better lives," said Ann Lavin, Sr. Director of Public Policy and Government Relations.

Diving Into the Values at Uber

The company operates under 8 guiding principles that are incredibly important in day-to-day life at Uber. These principles weren't just stuck on the wall one day and everyone was told to follow them. Instead, the CEO visited with employees to come up with these principles together:

  • We build globally, we live locally.
  • We are customer-obsessed.
  • We celebrate differences.
  • We do the right thing.
  • We act like owners.
  • We persevere.
  • We value ideas over hierarchy.
  • We make big bold bets.
  • These principles are signs of growth within the company. They're behind the Uber teams' innovation to change how accessible transportation is for everyone. The principles keep Uber working and moving fast so they stay ahead of the competition.

    The Culture at Uber

    Where Everyone Drives Success Together

Much like how the company came together to come up with its principles, the team works to solve programs together. By doing so, they're able to shape the world how they want to. Whether it's through helping improve local economies or making the roads safer, they're always doing something for their communities. But best of all, the culture is inviting to everyone.

"I feel that Uber is a place, where people learn from and celebrate each other's differences, which gives me a strong feeling of unity," said Yordan Cholev, Sr. Finance Operations Specialist. "In such a unique working environment, I am fully given the ownership and the opportunity not only to develop myself personally and professionally but also to be proactively involved in the decision-making process for continuously driving change and innovation."

Employees say that because every day at Uber brings something new and exciting they look forward to coming in every morning. No Sunday Scaries here. The dynamic team is always looking to learn something new so they can continually grow throughout their career with Uber. The challenges that come up each day impact the entire business, which makes the work extremely rewarding when the team comes up with great solutions.

    The Diversity at Uber

    Be You. The True You.

Uber has a goal of creating a workplace that reflects the world that it serves. With this in mind, employees come in every day and are accepted for their true, authentic selves. The company believes that by creating an environment where every background, experience or opinion can thrive the more passionate employees will be about their work.

"We celebrate differences at Uber and are committed to building a culture where everyone feels welcome, supported, and challenged," said Dara Khosrowshahi, Chief Executive Officer. "To help Uber reach its highest potential, diversity and inclusion needs to be at the core of everything we do."

Uber gets it. The company understands how important it is to have diverse minds within the company. That's why it's set a crazy goal of becoming the most diverse, equitable and inclusive workplace on the planet. The company isn't just focused on the numbers because it believes diversity and inclusion isn't just a box to check. In order to reach this bold goal, the company knows it has to take bold actions. It all started with transforming the company's culture.

Uber released a Global Self-ID survey to employees to find out how each individual identified, with the intent to better support them. This is the reasoning behind the company's Gender Transition Guidelines that was designed for transgender, non-binary and gender non-conforming employees who are planning or going through a gender transition.

The company how vowed that it won't stop at this. The 12 Employee Resource groups are being looked into to see if they can be expanded to include an even larger portion of the employee population. Uber has also looked into extending its parental leave policy for all parents. Whatever they decide to do next, one thing is for sure: the company won't stop until its goal is reached.

    The Teams at Uber

    Find Your Passion

If you had the slightest inkling that Uber was just a driving or food delivery service, you couldn't be further from the truth. The truth is that Uber offers a plethora of career opportunities so you're sure to find one where you fit perfectly. In fact, you'll find this list of teams at Uber:

  • Communications
  • Community Operations
  • Data Science & Analytics
  • Design
  • Engineering
  • Finance
  • Legal
  • Marketing
  • Operations & Launch
  • People & Places
  • Product
  • Public Policy
  • Safety & Insurance

  • If any of these areas tickle your fancy, then what are you waiting for? A company that's reaching for the stars on being totally diverse and inclusive? Check. Just saying.

What's UberEats like? I don't really like the idea of driving drunks around, but going and picking up food seems like it would be OK.

Basically its just like regular Uber, but instead of people u have food (or Walmart) in your car. You do have to go in the restaurant (unless its McDonalds) to pick up the food. Which can be a pain sometimes. Its also a pain sometimes trying to find an apartment or going upstairs. Not as much of a pain as picking up drunk fools though, plus sometimes you get free food if the customer doesnt show up.

Does it pay well? How much per drive? Average tip?

Average tip is around $5. My Average Uber eats delivery is about $4-8 depending on the distance and average regular Uber is about $10ish It doesnt pay well but it doesnt bad either, if everyone tips. Youll have days where you barely break even and youll have days where you make $100+ easy. It all kind of balances out in the end and its slightly above minimum wage on the whole.

Has a customer ever become a hook up or even a friend later on?

Never! There was one girl I had a nice conversation with and we exchanged social media stuff but nothing ever came of it. I think my gaydar wasnt working right that day. I'm really shy generally so when I drive I basically just have a podcast on or my music and keep to myself. Unless ofc theyre a producer or something and then I'll try and network a little but that probably gets old to them.

Im looking to drive for uber as an interim job and i have a few questions I have a fairly nice car with the loan in my name, but the registration and insurance in my fiancees name for money reasons. I have full insurance though on my truck. Can i still drive? Do you need special insurance to drive for uber? Is there someone i can talk to over tje phone who can answer if you cannot? Thank you

They don't require you to own the car, just have "legal right to use" it. You could use your car, your fiancee's, parent's, friend's, whoever's. You just have to have a valid license, be 21+ and the car has to be appropriately registered and insured (in anyone's name) Good luck getting on the phone with anyone from uber. You're usually luckily if you get anything but a form-letter response to an email.

I'm pretty sure you know the entire incident Uber vs Taxi. How do you feel about it? My dad is a Taxi driver in SF and I have friends that drive for Uber so I know both sides. One of the number one concern that Taxi and Uber drivers can both agree on is that there's too many drivers on the road because Uber doesn't limit them because there's no regulation, resulting in less business since demand is always roughly the same but the number of drivers increase everyday. Taxi on the other hand are regulated and are limited by the city law of how many drivers can be on the road. It also doesn't help that it clogs up streets in busy cities like SF and NYC. What about the fare cost? I know that Uber's fare also doesn't get regulated and can always provide discounts. Taxi on the other hand cannot because they are regulated by the city and are counted by public transportation to never increase fare or decrease fare without approval. My father was making $200-300/night until Uber business started. Now he's making less than $80/day including tips after gas, taxi rental, tax, etc.

I work in an area where there's more than enough demand to go around, so I've never really personally experienced any conflict with taxis. From what I hear from a lot of pax though, if there were more ubers in my area, the cabs would really start to hurt- we are much preferred to the taxis

Would you recommend this line of work for a small female? It seems like relatively easy money, but I'm 5'2 and most people don't find me intimidating in the slightest.

I wouldn't really say yes or no. I can almost guarantee you will be hit on constantly. If you drive nights, there might be some unwanted touching. I would 100% recommend a dash cam and maybe some mace. If you are interested, PM me. I'd be happy to answer any more specific questions you have, and can also provide you a sign up link that, depending on location, could give you a good sign up bonus

What do you do for self defense since you people can't carry guns or weapons?

So at different times Uber has made different statements on this issue. At one point, they wouldn't really say definitively either way, presumably because they didn't want to risk any sort of liability (in a court of law or the court of public opinion) if they told drivers no CCW and then some driver got shot. Laws vary by state, but in many, companies have the legal rights to prohibit their employees from carrying weapons at work. Uber drivers are not employees. Technically we are the owners of private businesses which do contract work for uber. So I am both boss and employee. Therefore Me (the boss) could prohibit my "employee" from carrying a weapon at work, or I could require my "employee" to carry. But either way- its is my company, its my call. Uber of course has the right to choose not to do business with contractors who require their "employee" to carry a weapon, but uber has no legal basis for prohibiting it. They may choose to end their contract with that company, but as long as the weapon was carried in accordance with local laws, the "employee" will not face any legal consequences. Also, can anyone please cite me a source on where uber says no guns for drivers? I've heard it plenty, but never actually seen an official source. I can say it is not in the service agreement, which is the only contract I've ever signed with them

Somethings not right with the pay stub you have shown a picture of and you saying you make around $300 in 30-40 hours. Your average ride is $4.52 and your average ride looks to be around 6 min give or take. Those 50 rides averaging 6 minutes would put you at 5 hours of drive time for $220. Are you telling me there are roughly 25 hours of down time while you are ubering?

First, that's not a pay stub- it's basically a summary of recent trips, still subject to adjustment until end of the pay period. Second, you're absolutely right. If I calculated my earnings based only on my actual fares, it would be closer to $200 a week. But during certain times, I have guaranteed earnings. That's why i only work the specific hours I work. And I don't mean "demand is high, so I'm guaranteed to make $X" I mean that (as long as I meet some basic requirements) at the right time, I'm guaranteed $16/hr net. If I don't make that much from fares, uber will pay me the difference.
