Uber has been changing the way we move around the world. From getting to work, to how you get your food delivered to you. The company is defining the future of mobility. But it didn't get there by itself. It had some help from a team of optimists and doers who are motivated to tackle tough challenges. At Uber, they learn from their experiences.
"Uber has always been about transformation. Starting with transforming urban transportation, today Uber is transforming our cities with new ways to eat and to move, letting people live better lives," said Ann Lavin, Sr. Director of Public Policy and Government Relations.
Diving Into the Values at Uber
The company operates under 8 guiding principles that are incredibly important in day-to-day life at Uber. These principles weren't just stuck on the wall one day and everyone was told to follow them. Instead, the CEO visited with employees to come up with these principles together:
These principles are signs of growth within the company. They're behind the Uber teams' innovation to change how accessible transportation is for everyone. The principles keep Uber working and moving fast so they stay ahead of the competition.
The Culture at Uber
Where Everyone Drives Success Together
Much like how the company came together to come up with its principles, the team works to solve programs together. By doing so, they're able to shape the world how they want to. Whether it's through helping improve local economies or making the roads safer, they're always doing something for their communities. But best of all, the culture is inviting to everyone.
"I feel that Uber is a place, where people learn from and celebrate each other's differences, which gives me a strong feeling of unity," said Yordan Cholev, Sr. Finance Operations Specialist. "In such a unique working environment, I am fully given the ownership and the opportunity not only to develop myself personally and professionally but also to be proactively involved in the decision-making process for continuously driving change and innovation."
Employees say that because every day at Uber brings something new and exciting they look forward to coming in every morning. No Sunday Scaries here. The dynamic team is always looking to learn something new so they can continually grow throughout their career with Uber. The challenges that come up each day impact the entire business, which makes the work extremely rewarding when the team comes up with great solutions.
The Diversity at Uber
Be You. The True You.
Uber has a goal of creating a workplace that reflects the world that it serves. With this in mind, employees come in every day and are accepted for their true, authentic selves. The company believes that by creating an environment where every background, experience or opinion can thrive the more passionate employees will be about their work.
"We celebrate differences at Uber and are committed to building a culture where everyone feels welcome, supported, and challenged," said Dara Khosrowshahi, Chief Executive Officer. "To help Uber reach its highest potential, diversity and inclusion needs to be at the core of everything we do."
Uber gets it. The company understands how important it is to have diverse minds within the company. That's why it's set a crazy goal of becoming the most diverse, equitable and inclusive workplace on the planet. The company isn't just focused on the numbers because it believes diversity and inclusion isn't just a box to check. In order to reach this bold goal, the company knows it has to take bold actions. It all started with transforming the company's culture.
Uber released a Global Self-ID survey to employees to find out how each individual identified, with the intent to better support them. This is the reasoning behind the company's Gender Transition Guidelines that was designed for transgender, non-binary and gender non-conforming employees who are planning or going through a gender transition.
The company how vowed that it won't stop at this. The 12 Employee Resource groups are being looked into to see if they can be expanded to include an even larger portion of the employee population. Uber has also looked into extending its parental leave policy for all parents. Whatever they decide to do next, one thing is for sure: the company won't stop until its goal is reached.
