Develops, plans, implements, and evaluates educational programs to meet the needs of the Sterile Processing Department (SPD) and to aide in the professional development of staff. Assists the Surgical Services Manager with overall supervision and daily operations of the Sterile Processing Department. Evaluates workflow and makes staffing assignments. Assists the Manager in meeting productivity and labor expense targets. Oversees the training and competency of Sterile Processing Technicians. Recognizes and identifies the existence of problems or improvement opportunities and takes action to troubleshoot issues. Implements hospital policy and procedure for positive biological tests. * Monitors staff compliance with all required safety precautions. * Assumes responsibility of department in absence of Manager SPD * Coaches' staff and rounds with staff consistently. * Conducts staff meetings/huddles and provides educational opportunities for staff. * Ensures SPD policies and procedures are kept updated. * Ensures the competency of all SPD staff and other staff who may be involved in high level disinfection and/or sterilization in other areas. Maintains departmental education records in compliance with regulatory guidelines. * Oversees quality and infection control initiatives for SPD. * Provides a comprehensive and technical orientation, education and training program for the sterile processing staff. * Assists Manager with managing labor and supply components of the budget. * Assists Manager in organization functions of the department. * Assists Manager in conducting annual performance evaluations of SPD staff. * Assist the Manager with evaluation of the department's service delivery. Recommends and implements process improvements. * Responsible for all daily operations in the absence of the SPD Manager. * Develops educational calendar for all in-service training. Investigates and intervenes in problem situations, reporting appropriate information to Nurse Manager and documents information. Evaluates and completes assessment of patient needs to provide supportive care before, during, and after procedures and maintains accurate and complete endoscopy records. Maintains equipment and supplies to include: cleans and disinfects endoscopy equipment, operates and troubleshoots endoscopy and patient monitoring equipment, anticipates and assists with maintaining adequate inventory of supplies and medications, handles and cleans equipment in a safe and responsible manner. Maintains flexibility and performs other duties as required. Functions within legal limits of technical practice. Recognizes limitations and reports situations beyond ability or function to proper person. Reports errors of commission/omission. Participates in QI, Materials Management, Safety and Infection Control programs. Communicates pertinent information to co-workers. Not responsible for administration of drugs, IV procedures, or other therapeutic and diagnostic measures falling within the realm of nursing practices. Accepts direction from supervisor or physicians and adheres to established routines. Performs added tasks as assigned by management Minimum Requirements A minimum of 1+ years of previous GI experience preferred Associates Degree or medical assisting and/or prior technician experience. Commitment to building strong working relationships with other providers and our healthcare team. The Ideal candidate would be motivated, energetic and willing to learn. Experience working in a healthcare setting, preferably in a same day surgery environment. Required Minimum Education: High School Diploma or GED. The Indiana Endoscopy Center is an outpatient surgery center located at West Hospital in Avon, Indiana. The surgery center has three fully equipped, technologically advanced procedure rooms where Endoscopists perform gastroenterology procedures including: colonoscopy, upper endoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy. This is a PRN position. Endoscopy Technicians provide service and support before, during and after endoscopic procedures. Ensures the presence and proper arrangement of equipment and supplies in the endoscopy room prior to each procedure, assists the physician during the endoscopic procedure as allowed by professional and legal standards, cleans the endoscope after the procedure and expedites room turnover. Provides basic care and some diagnostic tests. Responsible for maintaining the endoscopic equipment and maintaining supply inventory. • High school graduate or equivalent required. • Current certification as a CNA, CRCST, CER, or CST is preferred • Requires Basic Life Support certification through the AHA. • Knowledge of various endoscopic procedures and previous experience preferred. • Requires knowledge of name and function of various endoscopes and related endoscopic equipment.
