Position description Position Overview The University of California, Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR) invites applications for a UC Cooperative Extension 4-H Youth Development Advisor for College and Career Readiness, serving Mendocino and Lake Counties. The Advisor will develop and deliver a program that will provide all youth meaningful personal development opportunities. The Advisor is expected to develop an extension and applied research program framed in positive youth development, emphasizing college and career readiness and curricula to promote program growth and expanded opportunities for youth participation. UCCE Advisors are responsible for applied research and extension of knowledge. Research activities are applied, needs-based, mission-oriented, and focused on addressing our communities' challenges. Extension activities are the educational practices Advisors use to share research results directly with clientele and communities. Increased knowledge and understanding of science-based research helps to support and promote the adoption of practices and technologies that solve problems. Extension methods may include individual consultations, presentations, organization of educational workshops and short courses, field demonstrations, and farm and site visits. Information may also be disseminated via radio outreach, webinars, fact sheets, policy briefs, news blogs, and social media. Publications are expected in various formats, such as newsletters, articles for the popular press, curriculums, conference proceedings, and peer-reviewed publications. Successful research and extension programs result in new information that improves knowledge or understanding and adoption of new skills, practices, changed attitudes, policies, and improved environmental, health, agricultural, economic, and/or social conditions. UCCE Advisors are evaluated through an academic advancement system based on four criteria: extending knowledge, applied research and creative activity, professional competence and activity, and University and public service. Location Headquarters: UCCE Lake County, 883 Lakeport Boulevard, Lakeport, CA 95453 Position Details The Advisor will implement an innovative extension education and applied research program to address issues related to College and Career Readiness in Mendocino and Lake counties. Using a positive youth development framework for college and career readiness, this position will create opportunities for youth to participate in meaningful developmental experiences to prepare them for further education and careers. The advisor will also provide academic oversight of the 4-H community club program and educational leadership to county based 4-H staff, educators, volunteers, and community members. This position offers the opportunity to address a myriad of issues by creating youth voice and authentic opportunities to solve issues of interest and importance to youth, such as access to built and natural environments, creating welcoming community spaces for youth and culturally responsive youth development. This position is positively situated to integrate ANR's research and extension education efforts across communities to improve youth development across the region. This is an exciting opportunity to develop and deliver relevant program content to have meaningful impacts in local communities and throughout California related to: Program factors or community strategies that contribute to positive college and career readiness Outcomes and impacts of a multifaceted youth development program on positive youth development. Efficacy and relevance of the 4-H Thriving Model of Positive Youth Development in California. Effectiveness of using youth as peer educators to in initiate community change through youth development programs and learning experiences. There are excellent opportunities for the new advisor to establish extension and research partnerships with a variety of stakeholders and collaborators, including local youth development partners, community service organizations, county government, and with youth-serving agencies in formal and non-formal education settings. The advisor joins a team of highly motivated UCCE colleagues who are passionate about their work and are dedicated to making a difference within the communities and throughout California. The potential for collaborative projects within the UC ANR system is nearly limitless. Counties of Responsibility. This position will be headquartered in the UCCE Lake County office, CA and have activity in Mendocino County. The position will also provide support to the statewide network of 4-H Youth Development community educators in College and Career Readiness. Reporting Relationship: The CE Advisor serves under the administrative guidance of the University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE) Area County Director of UCCE Mendocino and Lake Counties, and programmatically under the 4-H Statewide Director. This is not a remote position; the candidate must be available to work onsite at the headquarters location and travel to and be present in other counties with programmatic responsibilities. Specific expectations for maintaining office hours and fieldwork in the geographic area covered by this position will be outlined upon hire by the respective directors and supervisors. Qualifications and Skills Required Required Qualifications Education: A minimum of a master's degree in an area related to youth and/or adult education (emphasizing Youth Development, Psychology, Out-of-School-Time Learning, Youth and Career Development, or related areas) is required at the time of appointment. Key Qualifications Experience in conducting applied research, program evaluation, and education programs with youth is required. Strong leadership skills and experience in program and personnel management are required.     This position leads, under Director and PI supervision, most aspects of field research activities at the Hopland Research and Extension Center (HREC). The primary focus of this position is on project management of up to 20 different research projects in diverse fields of study within agriculture and natural resources. This range includes plant science, soil science, animal science, wildlife ecology, oak woodland ecology, fire science, rangeland management, and hydrology. This position interacts with Primary Investigators (PIs) throughout the research process, from idea generation through project creation and refinement including design planning, plot construction, project implementation and management, data collection, analysis, and reporting. This position assists with duties related to livestock management of HREC's sheep flock, and all field maintenance activities required to keep a 5,358-acre research center functioning. In addition, this position will assist with or lead public outreach activities and extension event. This position is a career appointment that is 100% fixed. Pay Scale: $30.32/hour to $39.23/hour Job Posting Close Date: This job is open until filled. The first application review date will be 09/03/2025. The next application review date will be 09/26/2025. Key Responsibilities: 70% Serve as primary lead, under supervision of Superintendent, in conducting field research activities at HREC. Participate in annual Research Advisory Committee process of Soliciting, reviewing, refining, and approving research projects. Responsible for application, supervision and reporting of herbicides, pesticides, and fungicides. Tractor and machinery duties as needed for project management and field work in vineyard and research plots, and around barns and pastures. 10% Works with administration, Community Education Specialist, and other staff, to plan and execute a broad range of extension activities, including researcher and professional field days, school trips, and intensive educational workshops with other collaborators. Develop original content or refine existing curriculum to present information for a range of audiences based on research results generated here at HREC. Demonstrate procedures used in research and field activities. 10% Maintenance duties as required for maintenance of the property including: fence repair, plumbing repair, brush clearing, road repair, facility cleaning and repair, mowing around barns and infrastructure. 10% Provide information to Center Director, Superintendent, Animal Techs, and Ag Techs regarding grazing/non-grazing and prescribed burning needs of research when annual grazing and burning plans are developed. On a backup basis, assist with animal care (livestock, guard dogs, wildlife) including: shepherding, herd and individual animal health assessment, vaccinations, lambing, breeding, field sampling, and predator management. Requirements: Broad knowledge of scientific research principles, procedures, and protocols. Specific knowledge in and experience with agricultural and natural resource related fields of scientific inquiry, including but not limited to plant science, animal science, wildlife ecology, rangeland management and ecology, hydrology, and soil science. Experience and skill with conducting specialized field sampling and data collection and analysis, including work with live animals, remote field plots, electronic sensing equipment, and laboratory equipment. Excellent communication skills, written and spoken, including the specific ability to effectively discuss complicated technical and scientific questions. Ability to tailor communication to the specific audience, including a range from PIs to grade-schoolers and laypeople. Proficiency in basic computer programs including: MS Office, mapping programs, web research, document sharing. Preferred Skills: Associate/Bachelor's Degree and/or equivalent experience Knowledge of pest control principles, pesticide application techniques and safety, and relevant regulations. Qualified Applicator Certificate required (can be earned within 6 months of hire). Delivers permanency-focused services to both families and youth, helping ensure stability, well-being, and successful long-term outcomes. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Support and implement therapeutic interventions and structured activities for youth and families. Conduct SAFE home studies and complete required monthly in-home visits, as well as monthly out-of-home visits for youth ages six and older. Maintain accurate youth and resource parent records within the electronic database. Connect youth and resource parents with appropriate community resources based on identified needs. Assist in evaluating and developing resource family homes, including assessing environmental factors and personal characteristics to determine suitability. Promote and help maintain each youths stability within the resource family home, ensuring safety and overall well-being. Collaborate with youth and resource parents to address concerns related to adjustment, care planning, social functioning, behavioral modification, and rehabilitation services when applicable. Assist in coordinating respite care services, including scheduling respite days and nights for youth and resource parents. Maintain detailed, dated, and signed case records and reports in accordance with agency policies and procedures. Education and/or Experience Masters Degree in Social Work is required. Conditions of Employment: Must possess a valid CA Drivers License, current auto insurance, and a clean DMV printout (no more than 3 points). Must pass a clear background check with CACI, DOJ & FBI. CPR and First Aid Certified. TB Exam and Physical at the time of employment. Driving Requirement: This position requires the use of a personal vehicle for business purposes and on-call rotation. Driving is a required function of this position. Employees must use a personal vehicle that meet all agency requirements, including maintaining liability insurance that meets or exceeds state requirements. Employees are responsible for ensuring the timely renewal of their vehicle insurance policies and providing updated documentation to the agency to remain in good standing and compliant with position requirements. Training: RCS provides an in-depth onboarding and training orientation, which includes CPR/First Aid, Crisis Communication/Pro-ACT, Trauma-Informed Care, Motivational Interviewing, Collaborative Problem Solving, introductions to all RCS departments, and other valuable trainings.
