GENERAL PURPOSE:
Assists in performing a variety of technical procedures in the application of high frequency ultrasound waves to patients for diagnostic purposes. Uses highly skilled techniques to assist in clinical decision making, with guidance from senior Sonographers while working towards obtaining sound knowledge of cardiology, cardiovascular hemodynamics, doppler physics/instrumentation, cardiac and vascular ultrasound technologies.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assists with routine and specialized echocardiographic studies, including transthoracic, stress echocardiographic techniques, transesophageal and contrast exams, with the goal of becoming independently capable of performing complete exams.
Obtains pertinent patient medical history to optimize the exam for appropriateness. With assistance from more senior sonographer, reviews old echocardiographic studies for correlation.
Prepares exam room and ultrasound equipment to perform cardiac ultrasound studies in accordance with universal precautions to insure patient safety per approved protocols, policies and procedures. Communicate with the patient in a manner that is appropriate for patient understanding.
Obtains vital signs, including blood pressure, heart rate, height and weight. Evaluates any contraindications that may be limiting to exam completeness. Use of proper patient positioning along with ergonomically correct scanning techniques to insure patient and sonographer comfort and safety.
Works with more senior sonographer to perform the necessary cardiac measurements to generate preliminary findings and image acquisition/storage to support the interpreting physician of the finalized diagnostic report. Gain knowledge of cardiac structural findings and understand relevance.
Maintains active registry status in adult cardiac sonography (RDCS/RCS) through continuing professional educational credits. Attends echo conferences offered at URMC and/or attends local and national Echocardiography/Cardiology conferences to increase clinical knowledge base. Maintains active status in BLS (Basic Life Support).
Keeps lab and exam rooms in clean, working order, including cleaning ultrasound equipment and transducers according to lab policy. Reports all equipment malfunctions and problems to lead sonographer. Keeps all inventory and supplies current and stocked in each exam room.
Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Associate's degree required.
2 years of experience in cardiac imaging or related field or successful completion of accredited cardiac echo sonographer training program required or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Working knowledge of cardiology, cardiovascular hemodynamics, doppler physics/ instrumentation, cardiac and vascular ultrasound technologies required.
RDCS/RCS certification required; RVT certification preferred.

Additional duties may include work on special projects such as research, new equipment evaluations, assisting in the design of areas where clinical equipment will be installed, assignment to departmental committees, or training of less experienced sonographers as assigned.
Band Two requires a minimum of 18 months of progressively responsible professional work experience in a clinical or hospital environment, with at least 6 months dedicated to the UR Imaging Sciences Department, certification as a Registered Vascular Technologist, and capable of competently performing Sonography duties to include designated specialty competencies.
Band Three (III): Advanced Sonographer - Independently is responsible for scanning patients in a safe and efficient manner, completing all associated paper and computer work, and discharging the patient from the US department with appropriate post US instructions.
In addition to the requirements of a Band Two Certified Sonographer, a Band Three Sonographer will be responsible for performing the duty as primary preceptor for new employees and students, demonstrate an in depth knowledge and capability of scanning on all equipment at respective sites, and troubleshooting equipment malfunctions. Must demonstrate proficiency in caring for and scanning all patient types utilizing basic to advanced scanning protocols and techniques. A Band Three technologist is considered a subject matter expert in downtime procedures and acts as super-user when new equipment or programs are introduced to the department. Will be responsible for rotating through all sites across the enterprise as needed.
Select Band Three Sonographers may be designated as Leads to support operations on various shifts. Leads may either assist their shift supervisor, or in the absence of a supervisor, determine workflow and staff schedule/assignments. Leads may also provide performance evaluation input to the section supervisor.
Band Three requires a minimum of 4 years of progressively responsible professional work experience as a specialist in Sonography in a clinical or hospital environment with 1 year dedicated to the URMC Imaging Sciences Department preferred. Technologist must be certified as a Registered Vascular Technologist and competent in the requirements and skill set of a Band Two Sonographer.
Movement in the bands is determined by the department manager and APS upon successful demonstration of knowledge and task proficiency as defined in the career ladder. Movement to a higher band is based on departmental needs and final approval from the Imaging Sciences Clinical Director of Operations in collaboration with Human Resources. Based on departmental need, employees hired externally with appropriate credentials and relevant experience may enter the career bands as a Band Three to serve in a Lead role.

+ Assists with routine and specialized echocardiographic studies, including transthoracic, stress echocardiographic techniques, transesophageal and contrast exams, with the goal of becoming independently capable of performing complete exams.
+ Obtains pertinent patient medical history to optimize the exam for appropriateness. With assistance from more senior sonographer, reviews old echocardiographic studies for correlation.
+ Prepares exam room and ultrasound equipment to perform cardiac ultrasound studies in accordance with universal precautions to insure patient safety per approved protocols, policies and procedures. Communicate with the patient in a manner that is appropriate for patient understanding.
+ Obtains vital signs, including blood pressure, heart rate, height and weight. Evaluates any contraindications that may be limiting to exam completeness. Use of proper patient positioning along with ergonomically correct scanning techniques to insure patient and sonographer comfort and safety.
+ Works with more senior sonographer to perform the necessary cardiac measurements to generate preliminary findings and image acquisition/storage to support the interpreting physician of the finalized diagnostic report. Gain knowledge of cardiac structural findings and understand relevance.
+ Maintains active registry status in adult cardiac sonography (RDCS/RCS) through continuing professional educational credits. Attends echo conferences offered at URMC and/or attends local and national Echocardiography/Cardiology conferences to increase clinical knowledge base. Maintains active status in BLS (Basic Life Support).
+ Keeps lab and exam rooms in clean, working order, including cleaning ultrasound equipment and transducers according to lab policy. Reports all equipment malfunctions and problems to lead sonographer. Keeps all inventory and supplies current and stocked in each exam room.

**QUALIFICATIONS:**
+ Associate's degree required.

Additional duties may include work on special projects such as research, new equipment evaluations, assisting in the design of areas where clinical equipment will be installed, assignment to departmental committees, or training of less experienced sonographers as assigned.
Band Two requires a minimum of 18 months of progressively responsible professional work experience in a clinical or hospital environment, with at least 6 months dedicated to the UR Imaging Sciences Department, certification as a Registered Vascular Technologist, and capable of competently performing Sonography duties to include designated specialty competencies.
Band Three (III): Advanced Sonographer - Independently is responsible for scanning patients in a safe and efficient manner, completing all associated paper and computer work, and discharging the patient from the US department with appropriate post US instructions.
In addition to the requirements of a Band Two Certified Sonographer, a Band Three Sonographer will be responsible for performing the duty as primary preceptor for new employees and students, demonstrate an in depth knowledge and capability of scanning on all equipment at respective sites, and troubleshooting equipment malfunctions. Must demonstrate proficiency in caring for and scanning all patient types utilizing basic to advanced scanning protocols and techniques. A Band Three technologist is considered a subject matter expert in downtime procedures and acts as super-user when new equipment or programs are introduced to the department. Will be responsible for rotating through all sites across the enterprise as needed.
Select Band Three Sonographers may be designated as Leads to support operations on various shifts. Leads may either assist their shift supervisor, or in the absence of a supervisor, determine workflow and staff schedule/assignments. Leads may also provide performance evaluation input to the section supervisor.
Band Three requires a minimum of 4 years of progressively responsible professional work experience as a specialist in Sonography in a clinical or hospital environment with 1 year dedicated to the URMC Imaging Sciences Department preferred. Technologist must be certified as a Registered Vascular Technologist and competent in the requirements and skill set of a Band Two Sonographer.
Movement in the bands is determined by the department manager and APS upon successful demonstration of knowledge and task proficiency as defined in the career ladder. Movement to a higher band is based on departmental needs and final approval from the Imaging Sciences Clinical Director of Operations in collaboration with Human Resources. Based on departmental need, employees hired externally with appropriate credentials and relevant experience may enter the career bands as a Band Three to serve in a Lead role.

**Responsibilities:**
Performs diagnostic patient care services using ultrasound and related diagnostic procedures. Responsible for providing a wide range of highly technical diagnostic exams including but not limited to: abdominal, small parts, GYN, abdominal and peripheral vascular, portable exams and interventional procedures.
