The Pediatric & Congenital Echocardiography Sonographer performs comprehensive diagnostic cardiac ultrasound examinations on neonates, infants, children, adolescents, and adults with congenital heart disease. This role requires advanced knowledge of congenital cardiac anatomy, strong technical expertise, and the ability to provide compassionate, developmentally appropriate care in a tertiary or quaternary pediatric hospital environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Perform comprehensive pediatric and congenital transthoracic echocardiograms (TTE), including complex congenital heart disease assessments
Perform echocardiographic studies on neonates, infants (including NICU), children, adolescents, and adults with repaired or unrepaired congenital heart disease
Assist with and perform stress echocardiography, contrast studies, and agitated saline studies as ordered
Acquire and optimize high-quality images, Doppler measurements, and hemodynamic assessments tailored to congenital anatomy
Recognize, document, and communicate significant congenital and acquired cardiac findings to pediatric cardiologists promptly
Provide age-appropriate patient and family education and emotional support during procedures
Collaborate with pediatric cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, nurses, and multidisciplinary congenital care teams
Support perioperative, ICU, catheterization lab, and emergency department imaging needs
Maintain accurate and timely documentation within the electronic medical record (EMR) and image archiving systems
Ensure proper operation, maintenance, and basic troubleshooting of echocardiography equipment
Adhere to hospital policies, patient safety standards, infection control protocols, and HIPAA regulations
Participate in quality improvement initiatives, research activities, and continuing education
Qualifications
Required:
Graduate of an accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography or Cardiovascular Technology program
Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) through ARDMS or Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) through CCI
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (American Heart Association)
Minimum of 2 years of pediatric and/or congenital echocardiography experience in a hospital setting
Highly skilled new graduates with dedicated pediatric/congenital training may be considered
Strong knowledge of pediatric and congenital cardiac anatomy, physiology, and pathology
Preferred:

Responsibilities

• Patient Preparation: Prepare and position patients for ultrasound exams, explain
procedures, and ensure patient comfort and safety during the imaging process.
• Image Acquisition and Analysis: Capture and review images for quality and diagnostic
accuracy, making adjustments as needed to obtain the best possible results.
• Documentation: Document patient information, imaging procedures performed, and
relevant clinical details in the patient's medical record.
• Equipment Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance and calibration of ultrasound
equipment, ensuring optimal performance and reporting any malfunctions or needed
repairs.
• Safety Compliance: Follow safety protocols to protect patients and staff from
unnecessary exposure to ultrasound and ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
• Collaboration: Work closely with radiologists, physicians, and other healthcare
professionals to provide accurate diagnostic information and coordinate patient care.
• Patient Care: Provide compassionate and professional care, addressing patient concerns
and ensuring a positive experience throughout the imaging process.
Qualifications:
• Education: Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography,
Ultrasound Technology, or a related field.
• Certification: ARDMS (American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography)
certification in relevant specialties (e.g., ABD, OB/GYN, RVT) required. State licensure
where applicable.
• BLS/CPR Certification: Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
• Experience: Minimum 1-2 years of experience as an Ultrasound Technologist preferred

We are seeking knowledgeable professional sonographers who are able to independently perform all outpatient ultrasound procedures with high quality results. Candidate must have 3+ years of experience.

EDUCATION:
Completion of accredited course radiologic technology or Associate Degree in Radiologic Technology.
Completion of AMA approved course in sonography or radiology technology.
Current certification with ARRT

JOB DUTIES INCLUDE:
Carrying out diagnostic procedures as ordered by the physician.
Perform wide range of outpatient ultrasound exams such as but not limited to general ultrasound, abdominal, pelvic, OB/GYN, breast, small parts, vascular.
Performing analysis of highly technical information
Operating sonographic machines
Guide patients through this sometimes difficult process by kindly talking them through the steps and answering their questions and concerns regarding exam, procedures and process
Positioning the patients properly for diagnostic imaging
Choosing the correct sonographic techniques to be used in each case
Determining whether the images are good enough for diagnosis
Selecting the image that would be shown to the physician

Requirements
Education and Experience
· Education - High school diploma or GED; completion of an ARDMS approved training program to meet registry requirements for application with ARDMS.
· Work Experience - 1 to 3 years of related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience as an Ultrasound Technologist and Vascular experience.
· Certifications and Licensures - Current ARDMS certification; current BLS provide card.
· Medical - Strong working knowledge of medical terminology and cross sectional anatomy.
· Equipment - Ultrasound equipment.
Knowledge and Skills
· Knowledge of blood borne pathogen requirements.
· Ability to perform ultrasound exams in general ultrasound and vascular experience to include abdomen, pelvic, vascular FNA soft tissue and small parts and assist physician invasive exams.
· Ability to work flexible schedules as needed and work overtime when requested and authorized.
· Strong organizational skills; Problem solving skills and basic computer skills, strong communication skills.
· Demonstrates skills required to competently perform vascular sonography exams.
Physical Requirements and Exposures
· Frequent standing, walking and sitting, occasional bending, stooping, kneeling and crouching.
· Hand and finger mobility for use of reaching and manipulating keyboards and other imaging equipment.
· Occasional lifting of materials weighing up to 30 pounds.
· Clear hearing and speaking voice sufficient for face-to face and telephonic communications.
· Clear vision, with or without correction, for near and far work, sufficient to operate office and medical equipment. Color vision is required.
· Exposure to potential hazards: radiation-emitting equipment, extreme heat or cold, chemicals, bio-hazard waste and sharp instruments.
· Noise level: typical of an office environment and medical clinic.
Additional Information
· Must be willing to work overtime when requested and authorized.
· Responsible for completion of continuing education credits sufficient to retain current licensure, when relevant, at own cost and on own time.
