This is a technical position to operate diagnostic ultrasound equipment and perform ultrasound procedures on various anatomical internal organs, peripheral vessels, fluid accumulations, masses and developing fetuses. To report preliminary findings, measurements and diagnoses to the Radiologist. To record scanned ultrasound images and transfer to PACS for interpretation after checking image quality. Participate in the care of the equipment by proper usage and storage of the probes, and maintaining the cleanliness of equipment.
Complete and close out all procedures in the computer system daily.
Participate in on-call schedule as department needs. Must respond to initial call back within 30 minutes and arrive at hospital within 45 minutes
Experience: Six months of formal training that includes hands on clinical applications

Responsibilities
Provides imaging services and transportation to patients of all ages; including neonate, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric. Provides patients and families with thorough explanations and adequate communication.
Upholds all safety standards related to assigned position. Follows the established protocols, practices and guidelines for assigned area of expertise to provide quality service. Observes JCAHO standards.
Uses I Care principles to ensure proper patient identification, correct exam, and to improve patient communication and engagement.
Prioritizes customer and patient satisfaction and utilizes AIDET principles. Works with other departments, modalities and personnel to provide above average care to patients and families.
Practices good stewardship with supplies, equipment and department resources to assist in maintaining the financial viability of the DCH Health System.
Understands clinical history, supply and exam charges. Follows billing practices.
Correlates clinical history with the exam(s) being performed.
Performs duties necessary to maintain accreditation.
Maintains a safe and clean ultrasound environment.
Participates in ultrasound QC and completes appropriate documentation for all ultrasound equipment.
Works with the manager/supervisor/staff to control and maintain inventory and supplies and communicates problems and supply needs as required.
Understands, utilizes and takes responsibility for the care, cleaning and maintenance of all imaging, transport and office supplies, equipment and software as required by assigned area.
Instructs and supervises student technologists and new employees as assigned.
Any job assignment requiring call during off duty hours becomes part of that duty and will be compensated as is customary for the hospital.
A charge tech or lead tech when assigned must facilitate and coordinate services for their area of assignment and serve as a contact person for radiologist, physician's offices and other departments within the DCH System. Keep other shifts informed of any changes in protocol, equipment issues and other functions that may impact the shift/department. Monitor the functions of the area of expertise and/or imaging department needs as necessary.
Per Diem staff must work one holiday in a calendar year and at least once during a 90 day period. Per Diem staff must notify the person in charge of any unavailability. If after four requests are made with a per diem employee declining work; that employee's per diem position will be reviewed and removed from payroll. Per Diem staff must submit a two-week notice of resignation.
Functions proficiently in specified area with little or no supervision.

Must fulfill the graduation and registration requirements as follows:
Ultrasound Technician/Diagnostic Medical Sonographer - Must be registry eligible by the ARDMS. Should obtain certification as RDMS and RVT (RVS) within 24-months of eligibility. New hire registered sonographers must be RDMS and RVT (RVS) within 12 months of hire date.
RDMS - must have current ultrasound registration by the ARDMS (American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers). Should obtain RVT (RVS) certification within 24-months of eligibility.

Have room neat and orderly before and after exams, check supplies for adequate par level and expiration of any supplies, clean sheet/pillow case after every procedure, and performs proper hand washing technique before and after every patient.

Reviews order, patient chart, and any other pertinent information before proceeding with procedure. The attending technologist will check with the radiologist or the attending physician if further clarification is needed.
Completes all required patient worksheets completely/accurately and sends to radiologist.
Demonstrates competency with appropriate documentation within the patient chart. Follows hospital/departmental protocol and policies when documenting in the chart. Records the exact procedure completed and other pertinent patient information as handed off to the nursing staff, i.e. “hand off” policy
Demonstrates competency wit the Hospital Information System (CPSI), and Picture Archieve Communication System, (PACS). Meticulously records all pertinent patient/procedure information with CPSI, starts and completes each procedure as required before sending to PACS for radiologist review, interpretation, and storage.
Accurately enters patient information into ultrasound equipment and performs quality image verification at PACS Q.C. station. Ensures correct side is marked and verifies image quality prior to sending to radiologist. Follows ultrasound protocols as approved by radiologist.
Transmit images to PACS for emergency ultrasounds and/or scans of an urgent nature. Follows Critical Results Test policy. Completes verbal call report forms completely/accurately.
Periodically reviews ultrasound results for training/learning purposes and for accuracy of technologist impression.
Completes all work before leaving shift. Informs the next shift, call tech, or next day tech, or any pending procedures or issues.
Demonstrates competency with scheduling, CD burning, film duplication, and other paperwork functions.
Participates in orientation of new employees and students.
Maintains inventory to ensure proper quantity of supplies are kept within the ultrasound room. Consistently secures all cabinets and doors. Assures all medications/contrast are in date and kept secure at all times. Keeps work area neat and orderly.
Assesses work area environment for any patient/visitor/employee safety hazards. Reports all safety issues to Manager or supervisor ASAP.
Consistently assures all life support equipment/supplies, i.e., oxygen hook-up, suction hook-up, are maintained properly and in excellent working order at all times.
Will maintain continuing education as required by Kentucky State, ARRT, and ARDMS. Must maintain 6 US specific C.E.'s annually, Will promptly place a copy of renewed certificates prior to expiration dates in the certification bindor as well as a copy to the Radiology Manager.
Quality Control and Improvement
Will use quality improvement indicator forms.
Will report all equipment errors or quality control issues to supervisor and/or manager ASAP.
Will accept various quality control duties as assigned by the director.
Participate in development and maintaining protocols/policies. Will assist Lead Ultrasound technologist with ultrasound protocols as requested.
Will participate in continuous quality improvement efforts in department and hospital.
Will clean ultrasound equipment three times yearly according to vendor specifications.
Will perform Cidex quality controls.
Will perform quality control and image verifications on ultrasound images before sending to PACS.
Will provide ultrasound in-services to other ultrasound technologist as requested by manager.
May be requested to be member of QI team.
Equipment maintenance and safety
Proper use and care of ultrasound equipment to include transducers and other components. Follows all safety procedures relating to use of equipment.
Immediately identifies equipment mal-functions to supervisor and promptly notifies service vendor.
Knowledge of location of service numbers and procedure for contacting service.
Proper use of RayPax equipment for remote readings.
Checks the ultrasound equipment for proper function prior to getting patient on the table.
Patient care/satisfaction
Interprets and enforces current standards of practice, policies, and procedures at Ohio County Hospital.
Interprets and enforces all hospital wide policies and procedures to include Infection and Exposure Control Plans, Safety and Disaster Plan, Personnel Policies, and Employee Health Policies.
Participates in Ohio County Hospital's Performance improvement efforts by actively participating in data collection analysis of findings and identification of opportunities for improvement.
Transports patients to and from department in accordance with hospital and department safety standards. (Returns patient to their bed in a neat and orderly manner).
Informs Nursing of any specific information concerning the patient while in the ultrasound department, upon return to patient room. Follows “hand off” policy to relay important information to nursing staff and document this on the chart.

Children and infants may require special arrangements during the procedure, i.e. explain the procedure to the parent or guardian. All patients 17 years or younger must have a parent or guardian signed consent for contrast, surgical, refusal, etc, unless an emancipated minor.
Demonstrates competency with all invasive diagnostic ultrasound imaging procedures, follows set protocol, and practices sterile technique. Assures all procedure required supplies are readily available before any invasive procedure is performed. Participates and assures a “TIME OUT” is completed being starting an invasive procedure and the “TIME OUT” is documented on the ultrasound worksheet.

Qualifications
Prefer A.R.R.T. (R), registered and Kentucky State Certified, and perform routine radiographs as needed.
Prefer provided documentation of ultrasound training in the following areas or be a graduate of an approved Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program. Areas of needed documentation include General Sonography- (abdominal, obstetrical, gynecological, and non-invasive vascular).

POSITION SUMMARY
The Vascular Sonographer reports to the Vascular Lab Director and performs all required vascular ultrasound and Doppler examinations at a high technical level under limited supervision. In this position, the Vascular Sonographer will perform ultrasound examinations at multiple locations. At all times, the Vascular Lab Sonographer maintains a high level of medical ethics, is self-motivated, strives to increase their knowledge and understanding of the field of vascular diagnosis and treatment, while constantly maintaining patient privacy and respecting patient confidential information.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Performs a full range of non-invasive vascular ultrasound exams, including arterial, venous, carotid, and abdominal studies, following established protocols and diagnostic criteria to support accurate clinical diagnosis.
Reviews and evaluates all images for completeness and diagnostic quality before presenting them to the interpreting physician. Ensures that significant findings are clearly documented and promptly communicated when necessary.
Maintains ultrasound equipment in proper working condition and keeps work areas clean and organized.
Monitors supply inventory and notifies the supervisor when items need to be replenished.
Accurately enters vascular exam information into the billing system daily, applying correct CPT and ICD-10 codes. Ensures proper documentation to support insurance claims and timely reimbursement.
Assists with maintaining IAC vascular laboratory accreditation by contributing to quality assurance, documentation updates, and the preparation of required case logs and reports.
Ensures patient privacy and confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA. Adheres to OSHA standards for safety, infection control, and equipment use.
Communicates effectively with physicians, medical assistants, and office staff to support coordinated and efficient patient care.
Provides ultrasound coverage at clinic locations as assigned by the Vascular Lab Director, with flexibility for changes based on operational needs.
Uses the electronic medical record (EMR) to document exam findings and retrieve relevant patient clinical history. Consults with referring providers to ensure appropriate exam performance.
Adjusts ultrasound system settings to optimize image quality and diagnostic accuracy. Troubleshoots technical issues during scans as needed.
Monitors report turnaround time and works with interpreting physicians to ensure exams are read and finalized promptly, especially in time-sensitive cases.
Maintains up-to-date knowledge in vascular ultrasound by completing CMEs, reading relevant literature, and attending professional conferences.
Assists in training and orienting new staff members and students in lab protocols, equipment usage, and exam techniques.
