Qualifications
Education:
Graduate of an accredited Ultrasound Program
Licensure/Certification/Registry:
Must be registry eligible at time of hire/transfer
Sonographer Registry Pending: New graduate sonographer until active ARDMS (American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers) in Cardiac RDCS or Cardiac credentials from CCI (Cardiac Credentialing International) registry passed (max time 6 months)
CPR required within 90 days from hire/transfer date
Experience:

Responsibilities
Obtain, review and bring together pertinent patient history, physical examination and supporting clinical data to facilitate diagnostic result.
Perform cardiac ultrasound diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures on patients of all ages by producing, assessing and evaluating ultrasound images and related data according to established standards, policies, procedures and guidelines.
Provide interpreting physicians with an oral or written summary of technical findings.
Maintain technical skills related to all ultrasound imaging factors; maintain knowledge of other testing modalities.
Demonstrate knowledge in human gross and sectional anatomy and physiology and pathophysiology to image and evaluate normal and abnormal tissue structure or function.
Understand biological effects of ultrasound.
Adheres to behavioral standards.
Utilize proper infection control procedures according to department and hospital procedures.
Ensure proper recording, documentation, confidentiality and transmission of patient information. Develop and maintain skills in digital imaging and information practices.
Monitor the condition of equipment and supplies to ensure safe and efficient operation of the department.
Comply with departmental policies regarding employee/patient incident reports.
Participate in the department's continuing education program, Laboratory accreditation and case review/quality review processes.
Keep current with clinical developments in the field of ultrasound imaging. Be responsible for continual learning.
Maintain ARDMS or CCI credential through documentation of continuing education requirements of the credentialing organization.
Organize and participate in daily activities that maintain operations: cleaning stocking, equipment evaluation, moving equipment to bedside studies, data entry and evaluation, emergency call rotation, imaging system electrical safety, equipment repair and diagnostics, Imaging and reporting system Dbase maintenance and Sys Admin functions.
Follow SMH policy directives and procedures the performance of duties and responsibilities.
Be an example to the laboratory staff of professionalism, teamwork and patient advocacy.
Demonstrate leadership in helping the team meet strategic goals of the department and the organization.
PERFORMANCE CRITERIA (CARDIAC):
Maintain skills and expand knowledge in the performance and evaluation of transthoracic echocardiography in the adult population.
Maintain skills and expand knowledge in the performance and evaluation of transesophageal echocardiography in the adult population in standard settings, the surgical suites and Cath Labs.
Maintain skills and expand knowledge in the performance and evaluation of stress echocardiography procedures.
Maintain skills and expand knowledge of the application of echocardiography in pericardial centesis, myocardial biopsy, intracardiac echo, or other interventional procedures.
Maintain skills and expand knowledge in the performance and evaluation of transthoracic echocardiography in the pediatric, neonatal and fetal population.
Possess knowledge and understanding of other cardiac diagnostic testing: cardiac cath, EP, Holter, EKG and arrhythmias, radionuclide imaging.
Maintain skills and expand knowledge of ultrasound contrast agents and their applications.
Recognize and address critical pathology through modification of scan protocols, recommendation of ancillary testing and notification of interpreting physician.
Demonstrate leadership in clinical application of echocardiography.

Develop and maintain a high level of skills commensurate with the standards set by the National Medical Director through continued education and interaction with other VCA UltrasoundTechnologists
Maintain equipment and manage the supply inventory to ensure continued and effective operations
Clean and maintain designated ultrasound and procedure rooms following each procedure or scan and at the end of the day to ensure smooth patient flow throughout the day
Obtain and document patient photos at several intervals throughout the treatment process
When not actively engaged with a scheduled patient, assist other staff members with their duties in the spirit of teamwork in order to maintain an effective and efficient operation
Maintain flexibility with given schedule, and in the nature of team spirit, provide support and coverage for other clinics in need of ultrasound coverage

Period of Performance: 1 Base year, 4 option years.
Compensation: $38/hour
Work Schedule: The normal work schedule will be 40 hours per week, 8 hours per day, Monday - Friday. The shift will be from 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. This 8-hour shift includes a mandatory ½ hour non-paid lunch break. If patient care needs prevent the ability to take a 30-minute lunch, the Ultrasound Supervisor must be notified during the said shift to provide coverage or authorize no lunch.
Primary Responsibilities
Work cooperatively with Radiologic Technologists, Physicians, and a variety of allied health professionals to deliver comprehensive health care services to VA inpatient and outpatients.
Perform a broad range of high quality, diagnostic ultrasound scans for FHCC patients including pediatric, adult and adult geriatric.
Examinations to be performed include but are not limited to: General Ultrasound examinations such as thyroid, abdomen, pelvis, retroperitoneal, scrotum, testicular, transvaginal, and first trimester fetal; breast US examinations; vascular Doppler imaging including ankle-brachial indices and other examinations utilizing Photo-Plethysmorgraphy (PPG); and doppler ultrasound examinations of the carotid arteries, upper and lower extremity vasculature, and abdominal vasculature.
Process images for interpretation. Begin and complete exams in Oracle/Cerner Electronic Health Record (EHR) applications as necessary. Scans necessary documentation, edits, and completes exams in PACS.
Assist physicians with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures by preparing the patient and equipment.
Recognize emergency situations relative to the ultrasound environment and exercise initiative in resolving. Use good judgment in carrying out emergency measures and procedures for obtaining medical assistance.
Describe imaging procedures to patients to encourage their cooperation and lower their anxieties relative to examinations performed.
Minimum Qualifications
Full and unrestricted license in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or the District of Columbia. An ARRT-US license or American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) certification.
At least one year of experience performing general and vascular ultrasound examinations.
Contractor staff shall have a current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification by a provider recognized by the American Heart Association.
Contractor's staff must be computer literate as patient documentation is directly inputted in the patient's electronic medical record. FHCC will provide training on the EHR.
Contractor's staff are required to obtain and maintain a current Personnel Identity Verification (PIV) card as well as FHCC network access for the duration of the task order.

Position Summary
Medical Sonographers operate specialized equipment that transmits high frequency, ultrasound waves in order to produce images of the areas scanned. Sonographers in this series primarily scan abdominal, pelvic, lower and upper extremities areas of the body (such as the spleen, liver, pancreas, uterus, kidneys, or thyroid, etc.), or perform OB/GYN related procedures.
Duties & Responsibilities
* Performs general ultrasound scans on anatomical regions such as abdomen, pelvis, and small parts
* Utilizes proper settings on the ultrasound equipment and patient tables for optimal scanning
* Assembles supply kits and instruments for exams such as thoracentesis, paracentesis and assists physicians with the performance of these procedures
* Cleans and disinfects transducers according to established infection control standards and manufacturer instructions for use
* Utilizes the electronic medical record and imaging information systems for processing, storing images and documentation
* Stock supplies in the rooms and alerts manager when inventory is low
* Confers with a radiologist to ensure complete acquisition and selection of images is performed
* Communicates with other clinical departments to coordinate patient care activities
* Instructs technical students and collaborates with residents
* Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
* High school graduate or equivalent.
* Current/valid registration, certification or licensure in Medical Sonography, accreditation in sonography by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (RDMS).
* Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification from the American Heart Association.
Preferred Qualifications
* Abdomen (AB) certification through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS)
