Job Summary: Performs Ultrasounds of internal organs for the diagnosis of disease and study of the malfunction of organs. Performs fetal Ultrasounds per Radiology protocols. Participates in CQI activities. Demonstrates Competency in the Following Areas: Responsible for the care and safety of patients undergoing treatment and use of equipment to minimize hazards of electric shock and burns. Responsible for safe handling of equipment and films. Performs clinical assessment and diagnostic sonography examinations. Perform invasive ultrasound procedures, Doppler vascular examinations, deep abdominal studies and color-flow ultrasound as required. Selects appropriate equipment for use in ultrasound setup, following exam specifications. Explains the test to the patient. Instructs and assists the patient in assuming the physical position for examination. Able to assess patient pain interfering with imaging procedure; makes appropriate physician contact for intervention. Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors. Supports and maintains a culture of safety and quality. Maintains department stock and orders supplies as needed. Selects a transducer and adjusts the equipment controls according to the exam being performed, the depth of field and other specifications of test. Enters test data and patient information into computer of ultrasound equipment to maintain record of test results. Moves transducer, by hand, over specified area of the body and observes sound wave display screen to monitor quality of ultrasonic pattern produced. Takes calls according to monthly schedule, after regular department hours. Produces images for each Ultrasound exam to be sent to PACS. Obtains a permanent record of internal examination by sending all images to PACS. Evaluates technical quality of exam to obtain representative images of pathogenic conditions. Discusses test results with supervisor or attending physician. Performs all quality control checks, as prescribed. Maintains accurate QC logs, service records, etc. Maintains records of ultrasound images taken, archiving and de-archiving data as required; calculates, compiles and records data from numerical readings on patient's medical record and related documents. Understands and practices proper use of all equipment; never operates equipment inconsistent with manufacturer's instruction. Calibrates, cleans and performs routine maintenance on equipment to ensure proper functioning; cleans and sterilizes instruments, supplies and equipment; stocks and replenish supplies as needed Keeps procedure room clean and neat, makes minor equipment adjustments as needed. Documentation meets current standards and hospital policy Practices medical and surgical aseptic procedures. Assists in maintaining basic records and reports. Assists in maintaining files. Assists in training of students and ancillary staff. Completes all work before clocking out and leaving. This includes checking with nurses' stations. Interacts professionally with patient/family. Has knowledge of facility policies and the functions of other departments. Provides care appropriate to condition and age of the patient, including pediatric, geriatric and general population. Regulatory Requirements: • High School graduate: BS degree preferred. • Bachelor of Science degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography is desirable. • Graduation from an AMA approved school of Radiologic Technology: either college affiliated or hospital trained. • Successful completion of training on ultrasound technology. • Registered by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) preferred. • One (1) year of radiologic/imaging experience. • Registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. • Certified by the State of Arkansas to practice and administer radiation. • Certification in area of specialty. • Current compliance with Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements for specialty(ies) as appropriate. • Current BLS Certification. The Ultrasound Technologist is responsible for performing a variety of specialized technical tasks in Diagnostic Ultrasound. Equipment malfunctions present problems in achieving this responsibility. Incumbent must utilize various positioning techniques in order to capture specific areas on film. Failure to properly scan patients results in repeated scan and ultimately inconveniencing physicians and patients. Decision Making: Incumbent acts in accordance with hospital policies and procedures. Discretion must be used in several areas such as patient care and scheduling. The technologist should be able to have good management skills and be able to make clear decisions in regard to patient care. Scan interpretations are governed by the Director. Director is contacted regarding equipment malfunctions, supply requests, and any unusual situations that depart from standard policies and procedures. Minimum Qualifications: Satisfactory completion of a formal Ultrasound training program or equivalent training Registered or Registry Eligible by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS), American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI). Must be ARDMS, ARRT (S), CCI registered within one (1) year of hire date and prefer registry in Vascular Technology within two (2) years. Job Objective/Summary: The Ultrasound Tech Provides compassionate care to patients while performing radiographic cases in various imaging modalities. Technologist is required to display a good understanding of age-related developmental issues of pediatric through geriatrics. Job Educations, Licenses/Certifications, Knowledge & Experience: Minimum of an Associates degree in an allied health field required. Candidate must meet requirements for registry by the Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers. ARDMS certification required. RVT certification and three to five years experience preferred. Sufficient working knowledge of the different phases of ultrasound and the operation of assigned equipment.
