The Ultrasound Technologist primarily performs the technical aspect of diagnostic ultrasound studies. This position receives patients, explains method of procedures, positions patients, selects and sets technical factors, sets up and adjusts accessory equipment required, and set technical parameters necessary for the requested examinations. Individuals in this position will be certified sonographers by the Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (R.DM.S.). Individuals perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures which vary in complexity because of the varied anatomy and the physical and emotional condition of the patient. Sonographers will interface with sophisticated ultrasound and computer equipment used in image acquisition and processing to produce diagnostic quality studies.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Determine test procedure according to the purpose of the examination and review prior imaging exams.
Explain procedure to patients and assists patients in the proper positioning for the test.
Select transducer and make equipment adjustments according to the nature of test, depth of field, and other test specifications.
Enter test data and patient information into the computer to become part of the test record.
Conduct actual test procedures. Moves handheld transducer over specified area of the body and while observing on the monitor selectively record images for the patient's permanent record.
Record diagnostic data onto PACS.
Check equipment on a regular basis to ensure proper operation.
Promote and maintain the highest standards of courtesy and professionalism to patients and referring physicians.
Function as a contributing member in a team environment treating co-workers with courtesy, professionalism and respect.
Maintain strictest confidentiality.
Receive and secure the confidence and cooperation of patients during procedures.
Explain procedures and positions patients for desired results.
Transfer patients using proper lifting techniques, requesting lifting assistance as needed.
Perform ultrasound guided needle procedures using sterile technique.
Perform the technical aspect of diagnostic ultrasound to produce optimal diagnostic quality studies for interpretation by a radiologist.
Ensure equipment is in proper working order. Report equipment malfunctions, initiates and coordinates service support.
Maintain paper and electronic patient records.
Independently perform standard examinations. Confer with radiologists to establish requirements for nonstandard examinations.
Maintain inventory of supplies and initiate procedures to replenish stock and to receive stock supplies.
Provide assistance within the ultrasound work unit to facilitate operational efficiency.
Assist facility staff in scheduling patients for examinations in a manner to allow for optimal flexibility of scheduling while maintaining high volume throughput.
Is trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and basic life support techniques.
Required Skills/Abilities:
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Exercise initiative, critical thinking and independent judgement.
Proficient in PACS, Digisonics structured reporting system or related software.
Thorough understanding of information technology and information technology systems.
Education and Experience:
Associates or Bachelor's Degree in diagnostic ultrasound (required)
Two years' experience as a sonographer is (preferred).
Certification as a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer by the RDMS and Oregon Board of Medical Imaging (OBMI) licensure in the state of Oregon (required).
RVT (preferred).
Physical Requirements:
Standing 6-8 hours/day, walking, stretching, bending and sitting.
Ability to move equipment and transfer patients.

Imaging:
* Provides quality real time 2D, 3D, M Mode and doppler applications to acquire images with accuracy and efficiency, using optimal skills and knowledge of equipment.
* Documents and demonstrates knowledge and skill to evaluate normal /abnormal anatomy and any related pathologies for presentation to Radiologist.
* Demonstrates knowledge and skill in ultrasound physics.
* Exercises responsible judgment in recognizing and reporting significant situations relating to patient care.
* Performs portable procedures when needed.
* Prepares and instructs the patient for the diagnostic study using age appropriate communication skills.
* Optimizes each image during the examination to obtain the highest quality study with the least discomfort to the patient.
* Must be able to perform all ranges of exams after completion of technical competencies.
* Assists the physician in invasive and/or specialized procedures, such as amniocentesis, needle biopsy, localizations, and tumor masses, as directed.
* Continues to stay current in regards to new US technology hardware and software upgrades.
Documentation:
* Verifies complete documentation of all pertinent information to provide accurate and timely service to customers.
* Verifies and initials orders in patient chart, Responsible for correctly identify patients by complying with Imaging dept. Patient Identification Policy.
* Labels images completely with patient demographics, position or other required documentation.
* Follows through with all aspects of scanning duties in order to provide efficient and timely completion of examinations with correct data entry, begin and complete with correct billing and verification that images are in PACS.
* Keeps equipment and work areas neat and clean.
* Maintains adequate par levels of all supplies.
* Performs quality control on diagnostic equipment and maintains a logbook for weekly entries as needed.
Other Duties as Assigned
Required Qualifications
* Graduate of an approved diagnostic medical sonography course that meets current qualifications to apply for and take ARDMS board examinations upon hire.
* Candidates must be American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) registered in OB/GYN and Abdomen within 12 months of hire date.
* Must be licensed by the Oregon Board of Medical Imaging.
* Must have current approved CPR Card.
* AHA BLS required upon hire.
Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies):
* Must have good judgment, decision making and communication skills.
* Proficient in the use of various ultrasound units.
* Must be able to demonstrate specific normal anatomy and abnormal pathology.

Qualifications
* Education Requirements - Satisfactory completion of formal Ultrasound Training program.
* Licensure Required: Registration or registration eligible by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS)(RDMS) and must be certified within 12 months of hire.
