The Department of Radiology at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital is a consultative service that will provide services in the following categories: diagnostic radiology, nuclear medicine, ultrasound, computed tomography, interventional radiography, MRI, bone density and mammography. The department offers services 24 hours a day, seven days a week to inpatients, outpatients and emergency room patients of all ages. Under the direction of the Radiologist, the technologist performs ultrasound procedures within the guidelines of the ACR. Key Responsibilities:
* Reviews patient order, and obtains appropriate clinical history
* Prepares room, equipment, and supplies for each patient.
* Prepares patient by explaining the procedure, positions the patient according to protocol, and assists patient at end of procedure as needed
* Follows prescribed techniques in administrating ultrasound exams and determines proper technique and parameters based on patient body habitus being imaged, including immobilization devices based on patient need
* Adheres to prescribed standards for safety by following ALARA, while practicing universal precautions and contact/droplet precautions as required
* Evaluates image quality for proper technique, motion, artifacts, and proper position
* Records images with proper labeling and identification according to ACR guidelines
* Completes work in PACs, RIS, and teleradiology program when applicable
* Knowledgeable of special procedures such as biopsies, drainages, injections including set-up and supplies necessary during exam
* Maintains stock supplies, cleans and disinfects ultrasound room and equipment after each patient, including the use of the Trophon for high level disinfection per policy
* Performs mobile ultrasound procedures as requested
* Voluntary call for afterhours ultrasound imaging
* Participates in departmental quality assurance program, including QC as directed. Reports equipment failures to Lead modality technologist or Director of Imaging
* Educates patients on importance of breast self-exams, clinical exams, yearly mammograms, and dense breast tissue.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
* Requires successful completion of an American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) approved training program in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS)
* Maintains registration with the ARDMS in at least three subspecialties
* Two years' experience as an ultrasound technologist preferred.
* Complete 30 continuing education credits in ultrasound every three years to meet ARDMS requirements.

Since ultrasound can be degraded or blocked by various tissues and materials including lung, bowel gas and bone, obtaining a sonogram is a tailored examination requiring technical skill to adjust the machine, experience to find appropriate "windows" that can transmit an undistorted ultrasound beam, and diagnostic knowledge to obtain extra images customized to the diagnosis of concern and to abnormalities seen while obtaining the basic image set.
This need to heavily customize the examination to each patient and to recognize and diagnose pathology separates the sonographer from other imaging technologists in radiology.
The Staff Sonographer performs diagnostic ultrasounds and other required modalities within individual department(s). Examinations are performed independently, under physician supervision, and with peer collaboration as is appropriate.
SCHEDULE:
9pm-7am Sunday, 8pm-6am Monday through Wednesday.
While not a requirement at this time, call could be assigned in the future if the business need arises.
