Job Summary
The Electrician I installs, maintains, operates, repairs and/or initiates repairs on building systems such as; electric, electronic, electro-mechanical controls, card access/security, fire alarm, communication equipment and their related devices and performs other related work as required, including but not limited to, repairs and/or initiates repairs on building systems such as; control systems, heating and ventilation (HVAC) systems, cooling towers, pumps and related equipment. Employing the use and need of specialized testing and monitoring, diagnostic equipment; works synchronously with Control Technicians/trade personnel maintaining the building systems integrity, exercises functional supervision of other employees of lower grade performing related repair and maintenance activities.
Essential Functions
* Inspects, maintains, repairs, instructs, advises and mentors employees, technicians and journeyman, in the operation and maintenance of the Campus electrical systems, Security Card Access and Fire Alarm systems and their related components including but not limited to, electric controls, electronic controls, electro-mechanical controls, and computer software programs.
* Acts as a first responder inspecting, testing, trouble-shooting, repairing and initiating repairs for all control systems, including but not limited to electric: electronic, electro-mechanical, software program controls in context with the building's Electrical, Security Card Access and Fire Alarm systems and their related controlled devices. This requires using electrical, electronic testing, and micro-processor diagnostic equipment. Interacts with contractors and campus customers relating to the operation, maintenance, and repair of various Electrical, Security and Fire Alarm controls.
* Provides preventive maintenance and preventive maintenance services on electric, electronic, and electro-mechanical controls. Documents work performed in the equipment maintenance history file. Utilizes computer programs that operate, maintain, and adjust building Electrical, HVAC, Fire Alarm, and Card Access systems.
* Maintains and develops operational, procedural and emergency response standards for Electrical, HVAC, Security Card Access and Fire Alarm systems and their related equipment to provide timely systems failure notification and repair response, minimizing equipment down time. This requires using micro-processor and diagnostic equipment.
* Assists Engineering staff in drawing review, inspection, trouble-shooting as part of the acceptance of new Electrical, HVAC, Security Card Access and Fire Alarm Systems, equipment, upgrades and equipment replacement, and associated software support.
* Drives a motorized vehicle around campus to various campus buildings.
* Installs, repairs, alters, and maintains pumps; estimates labor and materials needed to do the work.
* Cuts and threads pipe, using stocks and dies, power threading machines, wenches, power saws, safety equipment, and other related tools.
* Drills or cuts holes through floors, walls, or ceilings containing asbestos in performance of work assignments.
* Performs related duties such as erecting scaffolding, riggings, and/or ladders, laying out drop clothes, fabricating miscellaneous metal products; sharpening and tempering various tools; cleaning tools and equipment; preparing work reports; and training other employees on the job.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)
* Current, valid Massachusetts Journeyman Electrician's License.
* Must be willing to take an annual pulmonary function physical test.
* Possess a current, valid Class D driver's license.
* Considerable knowledge of the principles, methods, techniques, practices, materials, and tools used in the Electrical, Card Access and Fire Alarm trade.
* Experience as a Journeyman Electrician.
* Working knowledge of Massachusetts Electrical & NFPA Codes and their applications.
* Working knowledge of the general and unique hazards and safety precautions associated with the Electrical, Fire Alarm and Card Access trades.
* Ability to read, interpret and work from plans, sketches and oral instruction.
* Ability to make basic assessments of time and materials required to work assignments.
* Ability to stand and work for long periods of time, in enclosed, hot, moist spaces, working with a respirator on, climb ladders, and work on scaffolding.
* Ability to supervise and instruct helpers in Electrical, Fire Alarm and Card Access tasks.
* Ability to maintain accurate records, logs, etc.
* Skill and knowledge to interpret blueprints, schematics, elementary diagrams, logic diagrams associated with HVAC systems; the ability to generate, implement, understand, and respond to verbal and written instructions.
* Knowledge of safety practices, preventative maintenance practices and the operation of standard testing equipment.
* Ability to frequently lift and carry objects of 50-100 lbs.
* Skill in using the hand, power, and measurement tools of the trade.
* Skill and ability to work independently.
* Ability to provide off-shift coverage as requested.

Under the general direction of the Director of the Power Plant or designee, the High Voltage Electrician/Co- Generator Engineer is responsible for the operation, repair and maintenance of all electrical systems, motors, controls, high voltage (13,800 volts) generation, switching and distribution equipment and systems. Performs all electrical work as required, and operates boilers, turbine generators, turbo motor compressors, and all related auxiliaries when required. Performs repairs to boiler, turbo generators, pumps, etc.
Responsibilities
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Maintain specified power plant equipment such as pumps, compressors, boilers, turbines, etc.
Plans, supervises and assists in the operation and maintenance of high voltage (13,800 volts) primary switchgear and distribution system including double-ended substations.
Assists in the installation, operation, maintenance and repair of high voltage (13,800 volts) switchgear, electric switches, exciter, electric meters and other electrical equipment and apparatus.
Assists in the operation, maintenance and repairs of uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system, associated battery banks and load-shedding system.
Participates in the recording and checking of electrical meters and making of electrical tests as to load response and power factors.
Maintains two (2) 3125 KVA and one 600 KVA electrical generators.
Maintains a log of station operations.
Assists electrical contractors servicing high voltage equipment and subordinate high voltage electricians.

Operates all steam turbine generators, condensers, condensing water pumps and other related auxiliaries, synchronizing Mass. Electric's cables with the generator when necessary, logs observations. Performs minor electrical functions (changes fuses, bulbs, check circuit breakers etc.)
Operates all centrifugal compressors, motors, condensing steam turbine drives, condensing water pumps, chilled water pumps and other related auxiliaries. Logs observations.
Operates a large cooling tower and fans serving the turbine and refrigeration systems.
Performs preventive maintenance, cleaning and repair of all power plant equipment and instrumentation.
Ability to take readings on all power plant equipment.
Performs maintenance as required on all power plant related equipment, boilers, turbines, pumps, etc.
While in the performance of routine duties; may be required, as needed to perform all work associated with all maintenance trades of an equal or lower graded classification; where the work or task does not require a specific license.

Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Must possess a First Class Fireman or higher Massachusetts License.
Must be a licensed electrician in Massachusetts.
2 years experience in operating/maintenance in a modem power plant.
5 years experience in high voltage distribution and switching gears.
Knowledge and ability to operate and maintain electric generating station equipment and machinery.
Thorough knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions peculiar to this particular skill.
Ability to detect and locate causes of electrical failure and to repair breakdowns under adverse conditions on an emergency basis; take electrical meter readings, and make electrical tests as to load, response and power factors.

The Facilities Management department supports the administration, faculty, staff and students in the quality planning and development of facilities projects that support our mission. Our talented staff of approximately
140 FTEs (Cleaning, Mechanical Trades, Central Heating Plant, Grounds, Paint, Carpentry, Stockroom, EH&S, Fleet Services, and Mail Services) are responsible for more than 2,000,000 SF of property in over 60+ major buildings and for maintaining more than 300 acres.
In this position you will assemble, install, test, and maintain electrical or electronic wiring, equipment, appliances, apparatus, and fixtures, using hand tools and power tools. They diagnose malfunctioning systems, apparatus, and components, using test equipment and hand tools to locate the cause of a breakdown and correct the problem. They inspect and test electrical systems, equipment, and components to identify hazards, defects, and the need for adjustment or repair, and to ensure compliance with codes. They will be expected to
take after hour calls.
The Lead responsibilities in this position include: organize, prioritize, and schedule daily work; respond to the College's electrical needs, during normal working hours and on overtime-including 'call-ins'; supply material and tools available to others assigned to the Electrical Shop so they can accomplish the work expected of them; and input data into the computerized work order system to record time and work order information.
