Performs all types of Cardiac Ultrasound procedures including Transthoracic Echocardiogram, Treadmill Stress Echocardiograms, and Dobutamine Stress Echocardiograms.

I. Major Responsibilities:
1. Performs specialized or general procedures according to established departmental protocols.
2. Performs ultrasound procedures for Cardiac Ultrasound procedures and other specific areas as required.
3. Operates all types of Ultrasound equipment. Performs portable exams in various areas throughout the hospital to include the Operating Room and Intensive Care Units and off-site locations. Records images and makes hard copies (CD's) where applicable.
4. Uses Epic to schedule and complete exams as applicable. Completes preliminary reports in Epic.
5. Serves as a resource to sonographers, MDs, and students.
II. Position Qualifications:

Required:
1. Specialized post-secondary training equal to two years of college.
2. Registration required by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS), including the RDCS (Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer, under the ARDMS) or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) for cardiac specialties.
On call weekends every 5-6 week. Work at offsite locations/campus on a rotating schedule. Monday- Friday 8:30am-5pm.

3. BLS required.

Job Overview
Perform vascular ultrasound procedures on assigned patients according to the policies, procedures, philosophy, and objectives of the department and hospital. Perform vascular ultrasound procedures that follow radiological standards in a safe, accurate and timely manner, meet the American College of Radiology (ACR) imaging standards and allow the radiologist and/or physician to make a radiological diagnosis. Responsible for designated areas and/or procedures as assigned. Work cooperatively within departments and other service lines to create a system of quality health care. Job Description
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Associate degree in Radiology or related field.
2. Registered Vascular Sonographer (ARDMS) or Registered Vascular Specialist (CCI).
3. Two (2) years of experience as a Vascular Ultrasound Technologist.
4. Basic Life Support Certification.

1. Independently perform vascular ultrasound procedures on patients as assigned according to policy and radiological standards.
2. Verify patient and procedure to be performed.
3. Provide clear and accurate instructions to patients.
4. Verify and perform correct imaging protocol, step, procedures, and scanner parameters for each patient.
5. Ensure patient and staff safety for equipment used.
6. Participate in ongoing education and training.
7. Perform quality control on equipment and devices as required.
8. Communicate with other staff/departments to coordinate care of patients.
9. Maintain supply stock and request stock to be ordered when necessary.
10. Keep all work areas clean and functional according to DPH and The Joint Commission.
11. May teach students and support new technologists.
Physical Requirements:
1. Frequent standing, occasional sitting, walking, and lifting 30-35 lbs.
2. Manual dexterity using fine hand manipulation to operate radiology equipment.
3. Hearing and visual acuity sufficient to perform examinations, observe patients, read monitors and documents, and hear audible equipment alarms.

The cardiac sonographer is responsible for performing professional quality
cardiac ultrasound procedures including M-MODE, 2D (real time), PW/CW DOPPLER,COLOR FLOW IMAGING, STRESS ECHOES, TRANSESOPHAGEAL AND CONTRAST ULTRASOUND studies. Tests are performed according to the standards/guidelines of the American Society of Echocardiography. The sonographer prepares the patient for examination by explaining the procedure, acquires demographic information, clinical history, and correlates symptoms with findings. The sonographer must have the ability to recognize abnormal pathology and demonstrate correlation of this information into a useful study, generating a permanent record of the examination on the digital PACS system and hardcopy. An initial report is prepared for the Cardiologist to read. Direct notification to the cardiologist is initiated for issues requiring immediate attention. Each sonographer is expected to participate as a member of the Cardiac Ultrasound team, assisting in all aspect of the delivery of services to patients and physicians.

OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
Under general supervision and following established procedures, selects proper imaging techniques, operates ultrasound-imaging equipment to acquire images and provide an initial interpretation of exam to the physician in diagnosis and treatment of pathologies. Staff will be required to float among radiology clinics associated with BWH as needed.
Qualifications
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
* Ensures that two points of patient identification is obtained, that patient is properly prepared, and obtains a relevant patient history. Reviews the patient's chart to obtain pertinent clinical history, test results and laboratory data as they apply to accurate interpretation of the ultrasound examination.
* Explains exam to the patient taking into consideration physical and emotional needs; maintaining ethical standards (patient confidentiality, professional conduct, etc.). Delivers patient care under scope of license/training
* Utilizes universal precaution techniques as well as safety techniques specific to the patient's status.
* Performs Ultrasound studies on premature infants in an intensive care unit. Is knowledgeable about illnesses related to this patient population and the various types of care being provided to them.
* Be knowledgeable in the operation of all equipment to be used during the workday. To notify appropriate personnel of equipment malfunctions and repairs needed
* Rotates within department, divisions and all off-site clinics, by shifts as required and needed; cooperates with all personnel, promoting harmony within department
* Maintains effective working relations and communication with departmental and other hospital personnel.
* Execute paperwork, PACS, RIS, and reporting functions as necessary for each patient exam.
* Prepare the equipment, room and supplies necessary for each patient and regular daily use. Stock and supply room and general department area as needed.
* May oversee and instruct various personnel and technology students within the department.
* To acknowledge and participate in research programs, quality assurance, and quality improvement projects carried on in the department
* To assume all responsibilities for on-call coverage and to remain flexible in all shift coverage and overtime situations as necessary. (not applicable to Ultrasound at this time).
* Remain up to date on developments and trends in imaging techniques, procedures, and equipment. To participate in education programs and meet state and national requirements for continuing educational credits.
* Transport and transfer patients using established procedures according to departmental guidelines.
* Use independent judgment and initiative under pressure in a variety of situations when performing patient exams.
* Perform all other duties as directed.
QUALIFICATIONS
* Must have graduated from an AMA accredited Ultrasound Program with a minimum of 12 months' full time clinical ultrasound experience.
* Must meet the requirements and successfully complete the ARDMS certification (American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers) or equivalent.
* Must become registered in all the institution's accredited specialties: first specialty or additional specialty must be completed within one year of start of employment. Second specialty within second year of employment. Additional specialties as required by the accreditation agency.
COMPETENCIES REQUIRED
* Must have interpersonal skills sufficient to interact effectively with patient who may be under physical and/or emotional stress
* Must possess analytical abilities necessary to acquire and effectively utilize knowledge of imaging processes, techniques, and procedures and cross sectional anatomy.
* Work requires several weeks training to acquire necessary familiarity with imaging procedures, techniques and methods.
* Must have the ability to adapt to changing pace within the department, with frequent interruptions.

Qualifications
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
* Assist in the education and performance of ultrasound exams using M-mode, B-mode, Doppler, and color flow examinations in areas such as biliary, abdominal, pelvic, peripheral vascular, thoracic, cardiac, etc.
* Maintain ultrasound equipment, liaising with biomedical engineering, hospital IT, and ultrasound vendors to ensure an operational fleet of machines.
* Operate radiology and hospital information systems, and maintain an electronic exam storage system.
* Provide technical assistance to nursing and physician staff.
* Instruct faculty, fellows, residents, physician assistants, and medical students in the technical aspects of clinical ultrasound procedures.
* Coordinate work schedule with supervisor.
* Prepare and maintain departmental ultrasound reports and records.
* Participate in approved clinical research projects.
* Order, store, and maintain inventory of supplies.
* Learn to perform and interpret various advanced emergency ultrasound applications (we will provide educational materials and training as needed).
Qualifications
* Associate's degree in ultrasound technology and a graduate of an accredited School of Ultrasound Technology by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
License/Certifications
* Certification or certification eligible by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS). RDMS-AB and RDCS-AE credentials preferred. If "eligible," the employee must be certified within one year of hire.
* Maintains minimum CE credits as mandated by the accrediting body ARDMS.

* Conducts scanning process using ultrasound equipment; move transducer over specified body area, adjusting equipment to produce optimum image; records digital images as directed for radiologist interpretation.
* Reviews patient history and other supporting clinical data to facilitate optimum diagnostic results.
* Explains procedures to patients to assure cooperation and understanding of exam.
* Selects appropriate transducer depending upon area of interest and depth of field.
* Positions patient for optimal results as required per exam.
* Reschedules exams, as necessary, due to poor prep, etc.
* QCs images and ensures that images are transferred to PACS and available for radiologist interpretation.
* Assembles all necessary information and diagnostic images for Radiologist-exam completed in the RIS, NOTES, report impression as applicable.
* Assists physician in such procedures as interventional procedures, etc.; scans patient, marks patient's body, determines angle for puncture while maintaining sterile technique.
* Maintains a high standard of professionalism at all times.

Under the supervision of the AVP of Diagnostic Imaging, coordinates patient flow and scheduling in the Ultrasound Department. Provides direct patient care services and other related functions in support of the department. Oversees the activities of the staff technologists. Clinically works at the direction of a qualified Radiologist.
I. Major Responsibilities:
1. Under the general direction of the AVP of Diagnostic Services, coordinates the daily functioning of the Ultrasound staff, consistent with Hospital expectations and departmental policies and procedures.
a. Distributes and monitors the flow of work for an assigned group of employees.
b. Coordinates the staffing schedules to ensure appropriate staffing levels are managed including on-call and holidays. Completes weekly payroll activities in the payroll system.
c. Assists management in ensuring assigned employees are provided with appropriate resources, materials, and methods.
d. Provides recommendations to management for the most efficient utilization of assigned resources to ensure proper coverage, caseloads, and appropriate patient care.
e. Relays work instruction from management.
f. Provides ongoing training and education in clinical skills to staff members in conjunction with the AVP of Diagnostic Imaging.
g. Provides input to performance appraisals and disciplinary process.
2. Properly performs all ultrasound techniques and examinations, consistent with the age of the patient, in in-patient or outpatient settings, in compliance with departmental and professional standards and protocols.

b. Accurately completes all records, paperwork, and billings and submits promptly.
c. Positions and transfers patients appropriately and assist physicians with interventional exams.
d. Promptly and properly completes exams, performs QC to images, and send exams to PACS for review by the radiologist.
e. Assists the radiologists with ultrasound guided interventional procedures.
f. Follows Universal protocol in accordance with hospital policy and procedures.
g. Assists in maintaining an orderly inventory and in arranging the purchase of needed supplies.
h. Monitors equipment to ensure that it remains in proper working order and ensures that proper supplies are available as needed.
i. Utilizes proper sterilization and cleansing of all probes according to department policy and procedures.

Under general supervision of the Mammography/Ultrasound Supervisor, performs ultrasound scans to produce images to assist physicians in the diagnosis of injury and/or disease for patients of all ages. Performs related clerical and service duties.
I. Major Responsibilities:
1. Obtains and records appropriate patient clinical information and/or history; verifies physician assessment of each patient, making adjustments in the standard imaging procedures and techniques to accommodate patient size, age, or condition using Universal Protocol
2. Assists, transfers, and positions patients as needed, ensuring their modesty and physical safety, utilizing auxiliary equipment and/or devices as needed; selects equipment scan parameters appropriate to examination and patient condition
3. Processes and records scanned images per Radiologist protocol to ensure quality and accuracy. Reviews scans with Radiologists as requested. Accurately documents work in HIS/RIS/PACS systems.
4. Checks operation of equipment, sees that Q.A and maintenance schedules are adhered to; maintains cleanliness of tables and equipment to prevent cross contamination of contagious diseases, keeps rooms well stocked with linen and necessary supplies
5. Keeps up to date with changes in the field of ultrasonography by inservice study, attending courses or seminars as necessary and/or recommended, or participating in professional organizations.
6. Maintains yearly competency in Trophon disinfection processes
7. Assists in other area/modalities as needed

Performs all types of Cardiac Ultrasound procedures including Transthoracic Echocardiogram, Treadmill Stress Echocardiograms, and Dobutamine Stress Echocardiograms.
I. Major Responsibilities:
1. Performs specialized or general procedures according to established departmental protocols.
2. Performs ultrasound procedures for Cardiac Ultrasound procedures and other specific areas as required.
3. Operates all types of Ultrasound equipment. Performs portable exams in various areas throughout the hospital to include the Operating Room and Intensive Care Units and off-site locations. Records images and makes hard copies (CD's) where applicable.
4. Uses Epic to schedule and complete exams as applicable. Completes preliminary reports in Epic.
5. Serves as a resource to sonographers, MDs, and students.
6. Assists in the care and maintenance of facilities, equipment and supplies.
7. Maintains clean and safe work area. Reports any hazardous conditions or equipment breakdown to supervisor.
8. Provides proper patient care. Interviews patients for required information. Explains procedures to patients to ensure their understanding, cooperation, comfort and to optimize test results. Positions patients as required. Exercises care when moving patients to ensure their comfort and safety. Takes vital signs as required; informs physician of changes.
9. Maintains patient records and statistics accurately.
10. Label's sonograms properly to assist in diagnosis and to ensure correct identification. Provides test information to physicians. Notifies physicians immediately of results revealing patient risks.
11. Maintain records, reports and files as required or directed.

II. Position Qualifications:
License/Certification/Education:
Required:
1. Specialized post-secondary training equal to two years of college.
2. Registration required by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS), including the RDCS (Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer, under the ARDMS) or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) for cardiac specialties.
Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
Department-specific competencies, including age-specific competencies and their measurements, will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.
III. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:
Work is considered moderate. Position requires work indoors in a normal patient care environment.
