3rd Floor Smithfield has 33 beds: Medical, Surgical and the potential for pediatric patients. The pediatric patient may be an overnight observation after surgery. We do not have a pediatric group as our Hospitalists are adult only. We are primarily medical patients, and the designated Covid unit if the patient does not require PCU or ICU level care. We see patients with Pneumonia, Congested Heart Failure, Abdominal Pain, Altered Mental Status, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Hypertension, Hypotension, Diabetes, Shortness of Breath, and so much more. We also provide after care for patients that have gone down for a Heart Catheterization. Many of our patients are on hemodialysis which is done in another unit in the hospital - we take them to their HD and bring them back. We take care of patients that have wounds and wound vacs. We do tube feedings and tracheostomies. We really have the full spectrum of medical diagnosis on our unit.
We work 12 hour shifts: 0645-1915 and 1845-0715. Full time is considered three 12 hour shifts per week. We ask that everyone makes themselves available every other weekend although there are times when we can pull teammates off the weekend to staff during the week, and we rotate this to be fair. We have a Holiday schedule that is assigned when a teammate starts. We alternate Holiday's to be fair.
We have a designated charge nurse on each shift. Depending on acuity assignments for RN staff may be 1:5-1:6. We have NA teammates with a 1:8-1:10 ratio to assist with care.
We are active in our Nurse Council. It is critical to get feedback from the teammates doing the work at the bedside to provide insight and feedback on how we can improve our processes. We also have the mantra that "It Takes a Village" and we are "ONE GREAT TEAM". We need to be able to work independently although we MUST work together as a TEAM to provide the high level of care with excellence that our patients deserve. We have a very strong TEAM on 3rd Smithfield.
