Position Summary
The Senior Mortgage Underwriter is responsible for underwriting first mortgage, second mortgages, HELOCs, and portfolio real estate loan products in accordance with agency, investor, regulatory, and internal credit union guidelines. This role ensures member-focused lending decisions that balance risk management with service excellence. The Senior Mortgage Underwriter handles complex loan scenarios, mentors and educates staff members, and supports the credit union's core values to improve the financial well-being of our members.
Duties and Responsibilities
Underwrites and decisions residential mortgage loans in accordance with FNMA and internal Credit Union guidelines to ensure compliance with Credit Union and investor standards within his/her authority.
Evaluates income, assets, credit, collateral, and compliance documentation to ensure accuracy and completeness.
Renders credit decisions (approval, counter offers, suspense loan files and denial) with strong risk assessment and alignment to credit union policies.
Identifies and recommends alternative loan solutions.
Maintains a commanding knowledge of regulatory compliance, trends, and methodologies affecting all loan products and services.
Performs all income analysis for qualifying borrowers to include self-employed borrowers. Comprehensive understanding of income tax documentation including but not limited to sole proprietorships, S-corps, C-corps, partnerships, and Limited Liability Corporations is required.
Review appraisals and collateral documentation for accuracy and acceptability.
Issue clear, appropriate and consistent conditions to ensure high-quality loans with minimum rework.
Possesses time management skills and the ability to organize, prioritize, perform multiple tasks simultaneously; handle multiple projects and meet deadlines.
Shows an ability to adapt to market, regulatory, agency and investor requirement changes.
Performs other duties assigned including, but not limited to, special projects requiring extensive knowledge of Credit Union and department operations, policies and procedures, and safety/compliance.

Education/Experience Requirements
High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
Either a minimum of 10 years' experience in mortgage loan underwriting in a financial institution, or a bachelor's degree in finance, business, or another related field required plus 5 years mortgage loan underwriting experience in a financial institution, is required.
Must have current knowledge of state and federal regulations together with a strong working knowledge of FNMA, and FHLMC guidelines and standards.
Proficiency in computer programs (e.g., Microsoft Office Word and Excel).
Ability to analyze complex tax returns skills required.
Ability to work effectively at a fast pace and adapt to change.
Excellent written and oral communication.
Proficiency with Ellie Mae or Meridian Link Mortgage required.
Must be goal oriented.

Work in an office environment, requiring the use of office equipment, such as personal computers.

Contribute to preparing detailed business requirements for underwriting related projects for new products, system changes and enhancements.
Perform and validate system testing and communicate results.
Conduct policy reviews ensuring compliance with underwriting rules, policies, practices, and procedures.
Support Senior Underwriters, Data and Risk Analysts on projects, workflows, and underwriting data quality related procedures.
Execute underwriting project research to develop and improve underwriting policies, practices, procedures, workflows, and systems.

The primary purpose of this position is to underwrite new business and renewals in a profitable manner and according to authority level and established guidelines, and participate in special projects having an impact on the business. Assigned larger and more important agents/brokers. Utilize underwriting tools to determine accurate classifications, rates, and premium charges. Understand state laws, including cancellation and non-renewal, within assigned territory to properly transact business within each state. Knowledgeable in coverage forms and policy language; appropriate utilization of forms and exclusions. Assist with resolving premium audit disputes within assigned agents/brokers. Able to provide coaching to others.
What you'll be doing:
* Underwrite retail excess casualty business for the West Region to include reviewing, analyzing, accepting, and declining risks to ensure profitability for Markel;
* Review terms, conditions and pricing. Underwrite renewal business and handle related servicing;
* Underwrite and select new business that will produce an underwriting profit;
* Communicate with regional managers and product line leaders on individual accounts, current and proposed producers, and make recommendations concerning operations, systems and procedures when appropriate;
* Review submissions and identify exposure and risk from information provided;
* Implement corrective measures on renewal accounts as needed;
* Provide training or technical assistance to department underwriting staff;
* Monitor producers for profitability and production.
What we're looking for:
* 3+ years experience in retail excess casualty underwriting expertise
* Demonstrated technical knowledge and skills reflective of progression of positions of increasing responsibility;
* Experience in the retail channel with a "following" of producers;
* Demonstrated marketing and relationship building skills;

The base salary offered for the successful candidate will be based on compensable factors such as job-relevant education, job-relevant experience, training, demonstrated competencies, geographic location, and other factors. The base salary range for the Underwriter position is $74k - $102k with a 20% bonus potential and the Sr. Underwriter position is $92k - $127k/year with a 25% bonus potential.
