About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Underwriter specializing in Commercial Finance to join our growing team. This role is critical in evaluating, structuring, and approving credit facilities for small to mid-sized businesses. The ideal candidate will bring deep a knowledge of Commercial Finance with the ability to balance credit risk with business growth objectives.
Key Responsibilities
Transaction Underwriting & Credit Analysis
Conduct in-depth analysis of borrower and account debtor financials, cash flow trends, debt levels, and liquidity.
Champion the underwriting process for credit facilities, from initial assessment through final approval
Evaluate collateral quality, with an emphasis on accounts receivable verification, debtor concentrations, and invoice aging reports.
Risk Assessment & Structuring
Identify potential risks, including credit, operational, legal, and fraud-related risks, and recommend appropriate mitigants.
Structure facilities in alignment with company credit policies, capital requirements, and regulatory guidelines.
Recommend advance rates, reserves, and concentration limits based on client profile and collateral quality.
Credit Memo Preparation & Presentation
Prepare comprehensive credit memoranda that clearly outline client strengths, weaknesses, and risk factors.
Present and defend underwriting recommendations to the Credit Committee, senior management, and executive leadership.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Work with business development teams to structure competitive yet risk-appropriate proposals.
Work closely with legal counsel and senior management to ensure loan documents, factoring agreements, and collateral filings are accurate and enforceable.
Support operations and account management teams during onboarding to ensure smooth client transitions.
Portfolio Management & Monitoring
Provide ongoing oversight of approved facilities, monitoring borrower performance against projections and covenants.
Analyze trends in client AR quality, debtor payment performance, and borrowing base compliance.
Recommend facility modifications, risk rating changes, or exit strategies as needed.
Market & Industry Insight
Stay informed on economic conditions, industry trends, and competitive practices impacting factoring and asset-based lending.
Leverage industry knowledge to anticipate risks and identify new underwriting opportunities.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in accounting, Business, or related field
3+ years of underwriting experience in commercial finance
Strong analytical and financial modeling skills.
In-depth knowledge of UCC filings, lien searches, and collateral documentation.
Proven ability to assess risk and structure transactions within policy and compliance frameworks.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present findings to executives and committees.
Detail-oriented, organized, and able to handle multiple transactions simultaneously.
Understanding of the underwriting process by asset class.

**About the role**
Trustmark is looking for a Case Underwriter to join the organization.
Responsible for providing timely and accurate underwriting offers, while adhering to pricing and profit objectives. Develops partnership with Sales to maximize ability to sell new/maintain existing business. Stays current with our Administrative, Enrollment, Broker, and Enrollment Company capabilities and processes.
**Key Accountabilities**
+ Processes, reviews, analyzes and makes informed underwriting decisions for assigned territory. All cases are reviewed with manager or higher level underwriter until proficiency is achieved. At full proficiency, underwriting authority is a maximum of 5,000 life case or $500,000 of annualized premium.
+ Reviews enrollment and participation trends in assigned territory and makes recommendations to optimize opportunity for sales while minimizing risk.
+ Provides monthly updates on sold case successes and failures as it relates to access and participation for Guarantee Issue cases.
+ Continually asks questions to grow and better understand our products and procedures. Develops and grows relationship with Implementation Managers to gain their confidence in decisions.
+ Understands non-standard broker arrangements and enrollment company strengths and weaknesses.
+ Identifies elements of a successful enrollment and makes recommendations that will create value.
+ Works with reinsurer on cases that require facultative review.
**Minimum Requirements**
+ Bachelor's Degree and/or 2 - 4 years of related experience OR High School Diploma or GED with 4-6 years of related experience.
The compensation range for this role is (based on the corporate location in Lake Forest, Illinois):
$61,412.00 - $88,706.00 per year
The final salary offer will be determined based on factors such as location, qualifications, experience, skill set, and other relevant factors. This position may also be eligible for bonus. * Reviews the loan package received to ensure completeness verifying that all supporting documents are included to make a credit decision per established policies

Responsible for working with Credit Administration and the Market Bank on loan structure and terms, with a focus on medium to large complex C&I and Middle Market C&I credit opportunities inclusive of pre-screening opportunities and full underwriting on new and existing commercial relationships, leading loan requests through the credit approval process, and assisting with the overall portfolio management. Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
* Technical Underwriting - Solicits and reviews new and renewal account information required to evaluate a risk. Identifies all potential exposures and hazards in relation to coverage requested and individual and program risk characteristics. Assesses insurance and related financial risk in order to structure appropriate captive programs to effectively protect against frequency, severity, catastrophic and credit risk. Together with internal team members, takes responsibility to deliver promised service to customers. * Client Management - Develops and maintains relationships with producers and insured's to achieve overall production and profitability goals. Meets with producers and insureds to discuss individual account issues, uncover critical customer needs and financial buying characteristics. Required Skills and Abilities:
* Understanding and knowledge of the intent, scope and purpose of the Workers Compensation, General Liability, and Automobile coverage forms and endorsements with the ability to tailor to the sold captive program design.
* Possess a thorough understanding of loss sensitive programs, excess & surplus lines programs.
* An understanding of captive programs is desired, but not required. This would include products, pricing, expensing, actuarial loss projecting techniques, retention and aggregate setting, limit profiles, ALAE, credit risk, and effective utilization of facultative reinsurance.
* Understanding and knowledge of exposure identification and analysis.
* Possess a cross functional generalist knowledge of other disciplines including claims, risk control, audit, premium accounting, finance and legal. Knowledge of regulatory and compliance issues.
Education & Experience:
* Bachelor's degree or equivalent training required
