Job Description We're seeking a creative, detail-oriented Underwriter to join our growing Construction line of business, with a focus on Owners Interest products. This role offers the opportunity to work closely with contracts and policy language, apply sound underwriting judgment, and help shape coverage solutions within the middle-market Commercial General Liability space. The Underwriter will work onsite (five days per week) at one of our office locations, with a preference for candidates based in Omaha, NE or Los Angeles, CA. What you'll do: Own and underwrite a portfolio of Commercial General Liability and Excess/Umbrella renewal business focused on Construction and Owners Interest accounts, applying sound judgment within granted authority. Dig into contracts, policy language, and endorsements, identifying coverage gaps and crafting thoughtful terms and conditions that align with each risk. Partner closely with agents to negotiate renewals and deliver solutions, rating, quoting, binding, and issuing policies with confidence and attention to detail. Leverage underwriting tools, audits, inspections, and data to ensure accurate pricing, resolve premium audit issues, and support strong underwriting decisions. Stay current on state regulations and compliance requirements, while maintaining complete, organized, and well-documented underwriting files. Play an active role in the growth of the construction line, using creativity to help develop forms, refine coverage approaches, and strengthen agent relationships. Qualifications: Demonstrated experience underwriting Commercial General Liability, with exposure to Construction and/or Excess & Surplus Lines risks and coverage structures. Strong attention to detail, including hands-on review of contracts, policy language, endorsements, and supporting documentation to ensure coverage accuracy. Proven ability to analyze risk, apply sound judgment, and develop coverage terms and pricing aligned with underwriting guidelines and business goals. Effective communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to collaborate with agents and clearly articulate underwriting decisions. Ability to manage work independently in a fast-paced environment, with proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook; professional designations (IIA, CPCU) a plus; willingness to travel as needed. The base salary range provided below is for hires in those geographic areas only and will be commensurate with candidate experience. Pay ranges for candidates in other locations may differ based on the cost of labor in that location. In addition to base salary, all employees are eligible for an annual bonus based on company and individual performance as well as a generous benefits package. JOB DESCRIPTION: Essential Duties & Responsibilities Performs a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines: Reviews applications and financial requirements for risks requiring complex underwriting skills. Determines acceptability of risk in accordance with company guidelines and standards. Also, determines the need for additional evidence of insurability and appropriate strategy. Determines appropriate pricing based on financial and competitive analysis in line with compliance requirements. Prepares quotes and answers questions from agencies, policyholders or other external contacts and escalates issues to management along with proposed solutions as necessary. Negotiates with agents to reach positive and profitable outcomes. Notifies agencies of adverse underwriting decisions, rate appeals, underwriting requirements, status and declinations. Analyzes quality, quantity, and profitability of risks underwritten and prepares reports for management review. Markets products and services through agencies or through the brokerage community and makes field visits. Develops and maintains agency and/or broker relationships. May provide guidance and assistance to other underwriters and to other functional areas, particularly when related to cross-sell opportunities. Keeps current on state/territory issues and regulations, industry activity and trends and freely shares information with others. Utilizes advanced functionality in relevant CNA systems to perform day-to-day activities. Works with more senior underwriters or management on risks exceeding authority level or requiring special handling. Skills, Knowledge & Abilities 1.
