About the Role We are seeking a highly skilled Real Estate Underwriter with a strong background in real estate valuation, acquisitions underwriting, appraisal, construction estimating, and investment analysis. This role is ideal for an experienced appraiser, underwriter, or valuation professional who wants to apply their analytical expertise to investment decisions, monetization strategy, and deal optimization. You will assess property value, evaluate zoning and market factors, develop renovation scopes, determine highest-and-best-use, and help shape acquisition strategy. Your valuation insights will directly influence purchase decisions, renovation plans, and profitability. Work Schedule Tuesday -Saturday, (9:00 AM-5:00PM) Saturday hours may vary and require flexibility. Day to Day Responsibilities Maintain and update CRM records to ensure data accuracy, workflows, lead information and full pipeline visibility. Provide valuation-based guidance to field representatives during negotiation and contract phases. Collaborate with the Construction team to create detailed scopes of work based on ROI and value impact. Communicate projected renovation costs and value lift to support purchase strategy. Collaborate with the Dispositions team to set strategic wholesale pricing and approve offers. Work with the Transaction Coordinator (TC) to determine list prices for renovated and new construction properties. Recommend pricing adjustments for properties on the market based on market conditions and feedback. Utilize Microsoft Office Suite, Excel and Google Sheets for data modeling, tracking, and analysis. Work with one KEY MLS to research property details and manage listing information. Review and interpret property records and parcel data using GeoData. Property Evaluation and Underwriting Analyze on- and off-market deals to determine offer/monetization strategy and Maximum Allowable Offer (MAO) Conduct Highest and Best Use analysis for: Wholesale, fix & flip, teardown & new builds, retail MLS resale, and rentals Prepare full valuation packets: After repair value (ARV) comps, land vs improvement value, rehab estimates, exit strategy analysis and risk assessment Construction & Renovation Estimates Prepare accurate repair estimates for: Cosmetic renovations, full gut rehab, additions/dormers and new construction. Identify major red flags such as foundation issues, mechanical problems and functional obsolescence. Market, Zoning and Trend Analysis Review local zoning, setbacks, and buildable areas Analyze market trends, supply/demand, local comps, and neighborhood and market shifts Offer and Deal Strategy Produce written MAO calculations for scenarios Recommend final offer & exit plans to leadership Support acquisition representatives during negotiation and contract phases Track deals from due diligence through closing Contracts, Legal, and Compliance Coordinate with the TC to ensure all contracts and documents for properties under contract move through the pipeline promptly. Ensure full compliance with applicable codes, ordinances, regulations, and laws. Required Skills & Qualifications Detail-oriented with strong analytical capabilities Excellent written and verbal communication skills High integrity with a team-first mindset Construction or Real Estate experience (hands-on or General Contracting-level estimating) or ability to manage construction budgets for flips and new builds. 3+ years of experience assessing property condition via photos/video and produce accurate repair estimates. Experience underwriting deals for investors, developers, fix & flip companies, or private lenders. This is an in-person position in our office in Farmington, CT. Each Underwriting Associate provides vital team functions: Preparing information needed to underwrite new and renewal business Rate new or renewal quotes as directed by Underwriter Communicate with underwriters and broker clients to facilitate the rate, quote and bind processes Monitor various reports for consistency Potential for policy issuance and endorsement processing, including audits Assist in accounting procedures such as invoicing Data entry into multiple internet based systems We are looking for people with: Risk Management and Insurance degree or related degree from an accredited four year university or individuals with 2+ years experience in insurance Strong desire for a career in insurance underwriting Excellent computer skills including typing proficiency, Microsoft Office proficiency with an emphasis in Excel spreadsheets Strong written and verbal communication skills Innate organizational skills, willingness to take on challenges, and focus on personal responsibility Snapshot of what Amwins provides to our team members: Compensation includes a salary commensurate with experience Position eligible for annual bonus Broad benefits package available, most benefits start first day of employment Generous Paid Time Off (PTO) Collaborative, continuing education focused work environment Career advancement opportunities The above is intended to describe the general content of and requirements for the performance of this job. Uses knowledge and independent judgment to determine eligibility of risks when compared to guidelines of programs available. Interacts with Companies and Brokers via telephone, e-mail, regular mail and personal contact. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Reviews applications for insurance coverage, reports from loss control consultants and other information to determine if application is acceptable for the program(s) available. Evaluate the experience of a risk against the class of business under review. Evaluate the loss potential due to catastrophe, severity, and/or frequency. May rate policies or check previously rated policies for proper rating. Utilizes knowledge of automated systems to develop information for new or renewal policies. Prepares quotations for agents and answers questions from agents, policyholder, or prospects. Assists agents with comments or questions about applications and the likelihood of acceptance by the company. Reviews requests for cancellation, endorsements, etc. Reviews policies for renewal consideration. Request additional documentation necessary for the processing of an application, endorsement or cancellation. Conduct marketing visits to agents. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications/Requirements: Must have Producer's License. 3 plus years of insurance experience. Prior exposure to insurance underwriting type activities. Basic familiarity with computers. Good oral and written communications skills. Strong analytical skills and the ability to pay attention to details. Resourceful and controlled assertive behavior characteristics. Must have demonstrated negotiation skills Technical knowledge of insurance coverage forms and their application to exposure. Knowledge of departmental regulations and policies. Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines and standard accepted underwriting practices. Strong interpersonal skills working with Staff and Company Underwriters Experience in standard underwriting practices and procedures.
