The Commercial Underwriter provides accurate, timely, and succinct credit underwriting to support the company's portfolio management and new business development efforts for the Relationship Managers they are assigned to support. Duties & Responsibilities
Commercial Underwriter Duties:
* Financial statement spreading and analysis, including calculation of Debt Service Coverage or Fixed Charge Coverage Ratios per Busey guidelines.
* Use financial data such as cash flow, liquidity, profitability, and leverage to determine and minimize the overall risk of extending credit to businesses and individuals.
* Work with Commercial Relationship Managers or other Lending staff to prepare clear and concise Commercial Credit Approval Request (CCAR) memos including pertinent information associated with the overall risk of the loan, identifying the strengths and weaknesses of the Borrower.
* Evaluate collateral, industry data and other relevant credit information.
* Assist with Portfolio Management duties to include testing financial covenants, monitoring monthly borrowing base reports, preparing portfolio reviews and sensitive asset reports, as assigned.
* Assist Commercial Relationship Managers with the preparation of opportunity memos for new and existing relationships.
* Maintain a working knowledge of the Commercial Banking Loan Policy and systems, including nCino.
* Assist in the sales process, including accompanying Relationship Managers on customer and prospect calls.
* Approve loans that are within defined authority levels; recommend loan approval outside of defined authority levels.
* Participate in pipeline meetings to develop knowledge of prospective opportunities as well as upcoming renewals.
* Assist with other duties or special projects as assigned.
* Commercial Underwriter II:

Compensation

The Boiler & Machinery (Equipment Breakdown) Business Center underwrites and negotiates low to mid-sized Boiler & Machinery new and renewal business accounts for assigned agents, brokers, client companies, and/or internal business unit partners. The Account Executive (AE), Boiler & Machinery Business Center is responsible for account profitability, growth, and retention consistent with Travelers underwriting and marketing strategies and in coordination with Boiler & Machinery and BoilerRe Account Executives. Expected to communicate any accounts that may be in jeopardy of being lost at renewal to Renewal Management
Monitoring account pricing and rate at renewal to ensure that appropriate rate goals are maintained
Review and provide bind order details to Underwriting Assistants for binding/issuance
Complete Quality Assurance and Quality Control review on all bind orders
Foster positive working relationships with wholesale brokers
Foster positive working relationships with Alta's new business underwriting team to fully understand the renewal accounts
Utilize time management abilities in a fast-paced, high volume environment, which includes organizing, multitasking and triaging account priority
Responsible for endorsement requests during term of policy
Review renewal account subjectivities as they are received for accuracy and acceptability
Review underlying policies as they are received for accuracy and acceptability
Perform other duties as may be assigned
KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE
Full understanding and application of concepts, practices and procedures related to insurance, typically acquired through a high school diploma or equivalent, with 2-3 years of insurance experience, or a B.A. in insurance or risk management.

Steadily is hiring an Assistant Underwriter to join our growing team in the Kansas City metro area. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who wants to start or grow their career in underwriting with one of the fastest-growing insurtech companies in the country. You'll work closely with experienced underwriters, support daily underwriting operations, and learn the skills needed to thrive in the insurance industry.
This is a full-time, in-office position located in Overland Park, KS, where you'll be at the center of our insurance underwriting and claims operations. This is an entry level role and direct underwriting experience is not necessarily required.
As an Assistant Underwriter, you will:
Learn and apply the underwriting appetite and guidelines of our programs - we aim to say yes whenever possible while mitigating risk
Work closely with underwriters on endorsements, tasks, renewals, applications, and quotes
Provide timely support to internal and external agents, often addressing time-sensitive requests that help define our brand
Process work across internal systems including Salesforce; quickly become a subject matter expert on our platforms
Troubleshoot complex customer service and underwriting issues such as billing, inspections, nuanced risk profiles, and more
Maintain high standards of accuracy in documenting underwriting files in our policy administration system
What We're Looking For
Strong verbal and written communication skills; able to remain professional and diplomatic under pressure. While direct underwriting experience is not required, transferable skills in detail-oriented, problem-solving, or customer-facing roles are valuable
Tech-savviness and ability to learn new software systems quickly and independently
