Audits both new and renewing groups as necessary. Determines rates for alternative benefit variations. Ensures that group participation requirements are met. Prepare rate filings. Follows underwriting guidelines, policies, procedures and formulas in developing rates for new and renewal groups. Gathers the appropriate data used to determine the status of account refunds. Maintains spreadsheet information on group renewal history. Prepares memos and other correspondence to communicate changes in rates or benefits which have been approved by underwriting management. Processes the appropriate paperwork associated with renewal rate action and proposal closing. Supports internal sales staff regarding underwriting questions and/or resolves issues. Effectively communicates Underwriting decisions to other departments when necessary. Additional Responsibilities for Underwriter II: May determine rates for alternative benefit variations and funding arrangements. Assist in the training process and mentoring of more junior level Underwriters. Prepares contingent premium settlements. Prepares the rate quotations and completes bid specifications. Processes group financial settlement calculations. Reviews and determines whether or not to grant exception requests. Supports management reporting efforts and the development of automated rating and analysis tools. Additional Responsibilities for Underwriter III: May determine rates for alternative benefit variations and more complex funding arrangements. Actively involved in the preparation and maintenance of underwriting guidelines and rating policy. Actively involved with testing new rating, underwriting and front end systems. Answers questions regarding the basic factors used in developing rates, (group size, type of benefits, age/gender composition, large claims, experience provided from the prior carrier, current rates). Answers questions regarding the rate model and how it impacts rates in accordance with particular group demographic changes. Assesses health risk in a group environment (performs large claim analysis for ongoing claim cost). Develops prospective and renewal rates for group accounts in accordance with corporate and underwriting guidelines. Reviews and determines whether or not to grant exceptions to underwriting policy. Ensures the proper administration of underwriting and legislative guidelines for new and renewing groups. Handles large volume production with account specific issues (I.e. reinstatements, eligibility standards, group identification criteria, etc) Maintains a working knowledge of State and Federal regulations affecting group rating. Prepares rate breakouts and hierarchy definitions for group setups. Reviews and directs the preparation of experience reports for fiscal, ERISA and contingent premium settlements. May meet with external customers, brokers or account representatives to review underwriting calculations and provide explanations for rating principles. May prepare written summaries of recommendations and/or conditions of coverage for the group after completion of each analysis. May prepare an explanation of the past rating history, documenting benefit and enrollment changes, and providing a recommendation for benefit and financial options. Additional Responsibilities for Underwriter Senior: Contribute to timely and accurate productivity by assisting the Manager in education to new Underwriters. Attends broker meetings, as well as meetings with sales executives, agents and/or groups to provide explanations of rating principles or rationale of rating positions. Contributes to the development of new rating formulas, methodologies and guidelines. Represent underwriting on Cambia workgroups and strategy sessions and serves as department representative where applicable. The expected hourly hiring range for a Underwriter I is $22.70 - $33.35 depending on skills, experience, education, and training; relevant licensure / certifications; performance history; and work location. The bonus target for this position is 5%. The current full hourly range for this role is $21.30 to $37.70. The expected hiring range for a Underwriter II is $58,000.00 - $77,050.00 depending on skills, experience, education, and training; relevant licensure / certifications; performance history; and work location. The bonus target for this position is 5%. The current full salary range for this role is $53,000.00 to $88,000.00.     WHAT IS THE OPPORTUNITY? The role of the Underwriter III is to evaluate the credit risk against company standards and to determine the borrower's ability to repay a residential mortgage. The Underwriter III analyzes and interprets the most complex financial and non-financial data decisioning the requests with the goal of achieving the optimal quality asset for the bank while satisfying the needs of borrower. The Underwriter III is also responsible for LLCs along with other complex borrower types. The Underwriter III works within established lending authorities and guidelines, with complex or unusual situations escalated to the next highest authority level for resolution. This includes mentoring and training of Underwriters I and II including second level reviews. What you will do * Reviews the loan package received to ensure completeness verifying that all supporting documents are included to make a credit decision per established policies * Identifies issues and recommends appropriate resolution within policy service level agreements * Analyzes and determines the financial capacity of the borrower's ability to repay: * Performs credit analysis, financial statement analysis, cash flow analysis, liquidity qualification and payment calculation spreads * Reviews for stability of residency and employment * Verifies income per established policy * Identifies any exceptions to current policies * Documents a reasonable conclusion mitigating any identified risks supporting the request will be repaid * Accurately sets and clears conditions * Interacts with RLC and Processor throughout the life cycle of the loan, providing information, updates and assistance as required * Updates System(s) with pertinent information and appropriate data as required * Renders a decision within his/her lending authority. Job Summary * Underwrite profitable new and renewal business to meet LoB targets regionally including global elements * Ownership of large accounts / clients including negotiation of participation, pricing and terms and conditions * Training and development resource for Underwriters & Senior Underwriters * Develop and maintain strong relationships with brokers and clients * Specialized technical expertise / lead for at least one sub-LoB, Industry, or Product Line such as General Liability, Umbrella, Commercial Auto, Commercial Property, Workers Compensation Responsibilities: * Manage assigned broker portfolio of accounts to achieve efficient returns of profitability and growth * Underwrite new and renewal accounts to meet top and bottom line targets * Negotiate price and terms and conditions with producers * Proactively manage capacity * Underwrite and evaluate Natural Catastrophe Accumulation, ensuring an understanding of catastrophe modeling and interpretation of scenarios (for relevant LoBs) * Specialist / Technical Expert in Product Line within Middle Market Business * Underwrite International Insurance Programs (for relevant LoBs) * Underwrite in line with LoB governance framework - e.g. Underwriting Authorities, global MSU, Underwriting Guidelines, Rules and Principles * Ensure placing and binding of FAC Reinsurance prior to policy inception * File maintenance - ensure file is established (whether electronic or paper) and maintained for each risk and transaction handled * Proactively develop relationships with brokers and agents assigned within the territory to either pursue new business acquisition and / or large renewal retention * Acquisition of new business and retention of existing business including client and broker negotiations * Training, developing and coaching of less experienced staff (including Underwriters) * Manage complex referrals from underwriters and spokes and re-underwrite complex business as appropriate * Delegate work as appropriate * Positively represent Arch externally to the market * Proactively drive involvement of functional areas in Underwriting process, including e.g. MMC, ARC, Claims, Operations * Develop and maintain strong relationships with key brokers and clients and other relevant stakeholders (e.g. risk managers) Skills: * Risk Assessment and Management: Ability to assess risk inherent exposures and natural hazards relevant to LoB * Pricing and Market Mgt: Analyze current performance against benchmarks applying how the market operates and functions, the business needs and customer needs * Contract Drafting and Interpretation: Design, develop and implement consistent, robust wordings * Policy Management: Robust understanding of policy administration life cycle, information collection, policy issuance, premium bookings, credit control, cancellation. * Communication skills: Clearly and effectively express ideas and messages via speech or writing. * Influencing Skills: Ability to persuade and motivate others to act, without executive authority * Analytical Skills: Ability to effectively absorb information from various sources, then analyze, study or examine data in detail, and draw appropriate conclusions. * IT Skills (Office applications): Use general office application tools e.g. Power Point, Excel, Word. Requirements: * A minimum of 4+ years or Commercial Property & Casualty Underwriting experience. Middle Market experience is preferred * Recognized established relationships with brokers at peer group level and within market * Specialized understanding of regional / local insurance markets and competitor landscape * Good understanding of legal and regulatory framework * Undergraduate degree required.
