Responsibilities:
Service a book of business under the direct supervision of an underwriter
Log applications, prepare binders, and process policies and endorsements
Bind risk, post the invoice, and process technical data
Screen renewal applications and send out renewal letters; perform some of the underwriting and prepare quotes for underwriter approval
Assist with new business development
Order and follow up on inspections and handle endorsement requests and referrals for the underwriter
Manage relationships with retail agents and follow up on any outstanding information needed to complete the underwriting file
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience
Insurance experience in underwriting and/or brokerage support with excess & surplus lines preferred
Sales & marketing experience preferred

The opportunity
We currently have an opportunity for an Underwriting Consultant to join our Inland Marine team based remotely within the Midwest Region. This position underwrites risks including the selection and rejection of new and renewal business for the most complex, specialty accounts within the highest underwriting authority levels. Some of the Underwriting Consultant responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Maximizes opportunities for underwriting profitable new and renewal business, as appropriate based on market conditions, by leveraging business relationships, product knowledge and underwriting acumen. Develops and maintains an active target account list tracking prospects and account rounding and/or missed opportunities. Manages financial performance of all assigned products in assigned territory including accident year loss ratio, premium plans (including new business, retention, and rate/exposure increases), and commission targets.
Underwrites a book of business. Manages underwriting quality and book management. Executes underwriting strategy, including portfolio management, self-audits of new and renewal business and well documented approvals of underwriting edits. Ensures compliance with standards and assigned underwriting authorities.
Demonstrates a strong understanding of exposures and key coverage issues. Makes underwriting decisions to accept, decline, or modify risks within the highest production underwriter authority levels. Implements underwriting decisions in compliance with state laws.
Develops superior working relationships with producers to successfully promote achievement of mutual growth and profitability goals and to supply the appropriate products and services. From a sales perspective, has the ability to identify gaps in coverage and/or services, understands where the company can make a difference based on those gaps and uses that information to help retain or obtain a customer. Works closely with and establishes strong business partnerships with other departments, including claims, actuary, and risk control staff in an effort to better service producers and accounts.
Regularly travels to key producers/accounts and remains highly visible in the marketplace. Anticipates the needs of the agency plant, analyzes trends, and implements proactive strategies that best position the business. Understands and communicates the company's underwriting appetite and generates qualified business in support of that appetite. Monitors agency action plans and participates in agency planning and marketing meetings to best position the business for the future.
Gathers and analyzes competitor information and producer specific reports on assigned producers' new business flow, retention, profitability and potential, to support territorial rate reviews. Works with other underwriting staff to determine and make recommendations for marketing, pricing, products and systems.

* Develops superior working relationships with producers to successfully promote achievement of mutual growth and profitability goals and to supply the appropriate products and services. From a sales perspective, has the ability to identify gaps in coverage and/or services, understands where the company can make a difference based on those gaps and uses that information to help retain or obtain a customer. Works closely with and establishes strong business partnerships with other departments, including claims, actuary, and risk control staff in an effort to better service producers and accounts.
* Regularly travels to key producers/accounts and remains highly visible in the marketplace. Understands and communicates the company's underwriting appetite and generates qualified business in support of that appetite. Monitors agency action plans and participates in agency planning and marketing meetings to best position the business for the future.

Group Underwriting Consultant Senior Location: Elevance Health operates in a Hybrid Workforce Strategy, providing various levels of flexibility while also ensuring that associates have opportunities to connect in-person. Unless in a designated virtual-eligible role and specified as primarily virtual by the hiring manager, associates are required to work at an Elevance Health location at least once per week, and potentially several times per week. Specific requirements and expectations for time onsite will be discussed as part of the hiring process.
Alternate locations may be considered. This position will work in a hybrid model (remote and office). The ideal candidate will live within 50 miles of one of our Elevance Health PulsePoint locations.
The Group Underwriting Consultant Senior is responsible for determining acceptability of insurance risks and appropriate premium rates for large and complex group cases. Position is the most senior technical underwriting expert.
How You Will Make an Impact
Primary duties may include, but are not limited to:
* Calculates stop loss rates for large complex cases based on thorough analysis of experience, location, demographics, etc.
* Coordinates with other departments to ensure accuracy and consistency of overall account reporting.
* Proposes rates for prospective business utilizing a combination of other carrier experience, demographic data and manual rates.
* Performs post-sale reviews.
* Prepares or supervises preparation of annual settlements, rate projections, or benefit change increments and decrements.
* Surveys existing product portfolios by market, monitors sales results, trends and needs, recommends product portfolio changes.
* Assists in establishing rating and administrative procedures.
* Participates in major multi-functional teams as underwriting representative.
* Assists in the technical development of underwriting associates, which may include monitoring reports and work flow to provide recommendations on productivity and efficiency improvements.
* Updates and monitors departmental processes and procedures in compliance with system, regulatory and business requirements.
Minimum Requirements:
Requires a BA/BS in a related field; Minimum 7 years of related experience; or any combination of education and experience, which would provide an equivalent background.
Preferred Skills, Capabilities, and Experiences:
* CPCU, CLU, LOMA, HIAA, PAHM or other insurance related courses preferred.
* Stop Loss underwriting experience preferred
* Demonstrated expertise, knowledge, and proficiency in Medical Stop Loss Underwriting.
For candidates working in person or remotely in the below location(s), the salary* range for this specific position is $96,852 to $166,032.

The Underwriting Consultant will play an active role in achieving OptumRx's sales and renewal financial targets with specific responsibility for the Health Plan Reseller Underwriting Team.

**Primary Responsibilities:**
+ Active role in New Business and Renewals RFPs through an in-depth understanding of OptumRx and all competitors, industry trends, market dynamics and internal key performance indicators
+ Active collaboration and engagement with the Sales and Account Management leadership team; identify and prioritize key areas of focus
+ Pricing support in acquiring new clients and retaining existing clients

**Required Qualifications:**

The salary range for this role is $71,600 to $140,600 annually based on full-time employment.
