Executes underwriting strategy, including portfolio management, self-audits of new and renewal business and well documented approvals of underwriting edits. Ensures compliance with standards and assigned underwriting authorities.
Demonstrates a strong understanding of exposures and key coverage issues. Makes underwriting decisions to accept, decline, or modify risks within the highest production underwriter authority levels. Implements underwriting decisions in compliance with state laws.
Develops superior working relationships with producers to successfully promote achievement of mutual growth and profitability goals and to supply the appropriate products and services. From a sales perspective, has the ability to identify gaps in coverage and/or services, understands where the company can make a difference based on those gaps and uses that information to help retain or obtain a customer. Works closely with and establishes strong business partnerships with other departments, including claims, actuary, and risk control staff in an effort to better service producers and accounts.
Regularly travels to key producers/accounts and remains highly visible in the marketplace. Anticipates the needs of the agency plant, analyzes trends, and implements proactive strategies that best position the business. Understands and communicates the company's underwriting appetite and generates qualified business in support of that appetite. Monitors agency action plans and participates in agency planning and marketing meetings to best position the business for the future.
Gathers and analyzes competitor information and producer specific reports on assigned producers' new business flow, retention, profitability and potential, to support territorial rate reviews. Works with other underwriting staff to determine and make recommendations for marketing, pricing, products and systems.
Maintains a strong professional knowledge of competitive, regulatory and legal environments and applies this information effectively. Responds to requests for assistance or consultation from other company businesses or home office staff and may participate on related projects and committees as a subject matter expert. May participate in industry events as a subject matter expert and representative of the company.
Mentors and coaches less experienced underwriters. Develops and leads technical training and provides guidance to other departments within the company, as needed.

Professional insurance designation is preferred (AICPCU, RPLU).
Our salary ranges are determined by many factors including location, role, experience and skillset of the candidate. The following ranges displayed reflect the target base salary for new hires; however, your recruiter will provide more specific compensation details during the hiring process. The typical base salary range for this position is: $151,000 - $201,000 based on the factors aforementioned. For candidates located in San Francisco, CA; Washington DC; our Massachusetts based offices and the New York City metro area, the base salary range is $176,000 - $206,000. Position Overview
Under limited supervision, evaluates and classifies medical, non-medical, and financial risks on complex risks for life insurance up to $10,000,000 with approval authority up to $5,000,000. Ensures rate quotes are fair and equitable to clients, profitable to RGA Re, and completed within the required time frames. Maintains strong client relationships by providing underwriting solutions to client issues and communicating underwriting decisions, compromises and solutions in a professional, client-focused manner.
Responsibilities
* Appraises and underwrites complex risks for life insurance with approval authority up to $5,000,000 and ensures underwriting quotes are sound, competitive and profitable to RGA Re.
* Processes casework load to ensure completion in a timely, efficient manner, meeting or exceeding time service/productivity goals and offer/decline ratios; and ensuring compliance with internal underwriting and audit guidelines.
* Provides underwriting solutions to clients by partnering with them to identify unique, creative ways to solve their problems and improve their business results.
* Builds and maintains strong working relationships with clients by gaining knowledge of clients' business and uses effective listening skills to understand their needs. Effectively communicates, sells and negotiates RGA Re's underwriting decisions.
* Keeps abreast of new client company or industry products, current developments and changes in medical and financial underwriting and maintains/updates professional development through study of literature and participation in seminars.
* Identifies image system issues, sometimes on a remote basis, and reports inconsistencies or problems.
* Collaborate with Medical Directors, other team members, internal departments and other RGA Re offices to obtain expert knowledge, to assist in identifying solutions and resolutions to problems/issues resulting in quality results and client satisfaction.
* Participates in special projects, committees, and meetings and assists in client presentations, as required.

Qualifications

As a Payments Underwriting Specialist, you will be the primary gatekeeper of our payment ecosystem, evaluating the creditworthiness of diverse businesses across both card-present and digital environments. You'll leverage deep financial analysis and cross-departmental collaboration to approve new accounts while proactively monitoring our portfolio to mitigate fraud and risk.
You will be responsible for:
Analyzing various applicants and business types in multiple credit card processing environments, both card-present and non-card-present.
Requesting and obtaining additional information from the necessary parties to complete the credit review process
Determining creditworthiness for small to large merchants, both new and established.
Handling a wide range of lending amounts, including standard and non-standard documentation.
Comprehensive review and analysis of individual and company reports, including Experian, Equifax, Dunn and Bradstreet, Lexis-Nexis, Tax Returns, Financial statements, etc.
Communicating confidently and effectively with merchants AND sales representatives as needed to obtain updated financial information or any other documentation needed.
Maintaining and monitoring the portfolio of merchants through monthly reports and evaluate/manage risk to identify suspicious merchant activity and mitigate fraudulent behavior and charges.
Working with department personnel to obtain historical data and feedback for the previous 12 months' account performance.
Recommending and developing enhancements, sources, and resources to assist in the credit review process.
Communicating effectively with internal company departments and multiple levels of management.
Being prepared to address production overflow, short staffing, or special projects.
What You Bring:
Minimum two years of experience in an underwriting environment, with direct experience in credit card processing required
Demonstrated ability to assess merchant risk and creditworthiness across multiple business types
Clear, confident written and verbal communication, including requesting documentation from merchants
Attention to detail and strong analytical judgment
Ability to independently manage a high-volume application pipeline without sacrificing accuracy
Proven integrity and discretion when handling sensitive financial and personal data
Strong experience reviewing financial and identity documentation (bank statements, tax returns, business reports, credit bureaus)
The ability to adhere to the core working hours of 10am - 7pm Central Time
Direct experience with Stripe is considered a plus

Evaluate new and renewal policy documents to determine acceptability and ensure acceptance.
Contact and respond to verbal and written inquiries from customers and serve as an underwriting resource.

What You Will Bring:

The opportunity
We currently have an opportunity for an Underwriting Associate to join our Specialty Technology team based in our Anaheim, CA office or remotely within the western time zone of the United States. The Underwriting Associate provides advanced, complex technical services and support in partnership with assigned underwriter(s) and designated producers for complex accounts. Some of the Underwriting Associate responsibilities include but are not limited to:
* Assists underwriter in developing and directly servicing a book of business and within defined authority level, evaluates risks and makes recommendations for acceptance, rejection, modification, or referral in accordance with established underwriting standards, policies and programs.
* For new and renewal business policies, completes 85-90% of the front-end information gathering and analytics required, including ensuring compliance with all underwriting guidelines, and pointing out when peculiarities or deficiencies are noted to enable assigned underwriter(s) to make a determination on the risk.
* Responsible for adjusting policy pricing and properly documenting eligible renewals by utilizing guidelines with minimal to no underwriting direction.
* Ensures final policy documentation is complete.
* Develops superior working relationships with producers and acts as first point of contact. Researches and resolves complex errors and questions regarding processes and procedures.
* Takes initiative for continual learning and understanding insurance coverages and acquires additional insurance knowledge by enrolling in industry related courses and programs.
* Assists in the development of new processes, procedures and/or systems. Participates on committees and projects as required.
* Trains and acts as a resource and mentor for others.
* Ability to travel when the position requires.
Qualifications
* Advanced computer literacy with demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, and internet navigation.
* Proven analytical skills and mathematical aptitude. (arithmetic, algebra, basic accounting principles)
* Exceptional time and desk management skills with tremendous attention to detail are essential.
* Basic knowledge of property and casualty lines as well as other insurance principles
* Strong business acumen and critical thinking skills which lead to confident decision making

Our salary ranges are determined by many factors including location, role, experience and skillset of the candidate. The following ranges displayed reflect the target base salary for new hires; however, your recruiter will provide more specific compensation details during the hiring process. The typical base salary range for this position is: $61,000 - $86,000, based on the factors aforementioned. For candidates located in San Francisco, CA; Washington DC; our Massachusetts based offices and the New York City metro area, the base salary range is $77,000 - $90,000. In addition to base salary, full time Intact employees are also eligible for bonus potential and a full range of benefits to include but not limited to:
