As a Senior Underwriting Consultant, you'll play a key role in Pacific Life's growth and long-term success by evaluating insurance applicants; you'll correlate all aspects of risk to determine whether to accept, modify or decline applications. You'll focus on mortality by evaluating risk of death which includes history, degree of medical maintenance, treatment, and flags of potential future risk. How You'll Help Move Us Forward
Review and analyze prospects to determine eligibility for Guaranteed Issue/Simplified Issue.
Prepare offer letters for Multilife business.
Evaluate medical, non-medical and financial information to provide sound and competitive risk assessment on Policy Change, Reinstatement, and Multilife applications within review and signature authority.
Consult with superiors or medical department concerning any complex risk situations.
Provides Underwriting review for contestable death claims, as needed.
Develops and maintains strong relationships and open communication with field personnel to facilitate submission of business, promote trust, and make it easy to do business with Pacific Life.
Demonstrate dependability, organization, and sound judgment by adhering to schedules and meeting all productivity, quality, and performance standards.
The Experience You Bring
7-10+ years of Life Insurance Underwriting experience with proven proficiency in underwriting processes and philosophies
Established approval authority of $10M

Demonstrates a strong understanding of exposures and key coverage issues. Makes underwriting decisions to accept, decline, or modify risks within the highest production underwriter authority levels. Implements underwriting decisions in compliance with state laws.
Develops superior working relationships with producers to successfully promote achievement of mutual growth and profitability goals and to supply the appropriate products and services. From a sales perspective, has the ability to identify gaps in coverage and/or services, understands where the company can make a difference based on those gaps and uses that information to help retain or obtain a customer. Works closely with and establishes strong business partnerships with other departments, including claims, actuary, and risk control staff in an effort to better service producers and accounts.
Regularly travels to key producers/accounts and remains highly visible in the marketplace. Anticipates the needs of the agency plant, analyzes trends, and implements proactive strategies that best position the business. Understands and communicates the company's underwriting appetite and generates qualified business in support of that appetite. Monitors agency action plans and participates in agency planning and marketing meetings to best position the business for the future.
Gathers and analyzes competitor information and producer specific reports on assigned producers' new business flow, retention, profitability and potential, to support territorial rate reviews. Works with other underwriting staff to determine and make recommendations for marketing, pricing, products and systems.
Maintains a strong professional knowledge of competitive, regulatory and legal environments and applies this information effectively. Responds to requests for assistance or consultation from other company businesses or home office staff and may participate on related projects and committees as a subject matter expert. May participate in industry events as a subject matter expert and representative of the company.
Mentors and coaches less experienced underwriters. Develops and leads technical training and provides guidance to other departments within the company, as needed.
The expertise you bring
Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
7-10 years of progressively more complex specialty lines underwriting experience.
Professional insurance designation is preferred (AICPCU, RPLU).
Our salary ranges are determined by many factors including location, role, experience and skillset of the candidate. The following ranges displayed reflect the target base salary for new hires, but your recruiter will share more specific compensation information with you during the hiring process. The typical base salary range for this position is: $150,000 - $199,000, based on the factors aforementioned. For candidates located in San Francisco, CA and the New York City metro area, the base salary range is $174,000 - $204,000. Position Overview
The Regional Underwriting Director, Excess Casualty will be a key member of the ICW Specialty's newly launched Excess Casualty team catering exclusively to wholesale brokers in the E&S Marketplace. This director will be responsible for executing underwriting strategy, driving profitable growth, and building a best-in-class team of underwriters. As a visible market leader, the director will cultivate strong wholesaler relationships while ensuring consistent underwriting discipline and governance across the portfolio. Strategic & Market Leadership
Continue to refine and execute the underwriting strategy for Excess Casualty, aligning with ICW Specialty's multi-year growth objectives.
Ensure marketplace is clear on appetite, product design, and distribution strategy across middle market and large account segments.
Build a profitable portfolio that aligns with the strategic business plan, goals and objectives.
Identify opportunities for continued product innovation and differentiation, including niche industries, emerging risks, and new solutions for wholesale brokers.

Experience & Expertise
Bachelors degree required.
Minimum 10-12 years of underwriting and leadership experience in casualty insurance, with deep expertise in Excess Casualty.
Proven track record of leading underwriting teams and managing profitable portfolios across multiple industries and account sizes.
Established relationships with wholesalers, with a reputation of credibility, urgency with a get things done attitude.

This range is exclusive of fringe benefits and potential bonuses. What You'll be Doing
The Associate Underwriter plays a critical role in supporting the underwriting team by reviewing, processing, and analyzing insurance applications in accordance with company guidelines and state regulations. This entry- to mid-level position is ideal for someone with strong attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, and an eagerness to learn the full underwriting process. The Associate Underwriter will work closely with senior underwriters, brokers, and internal teams to ensure accurate, timely, and compliant policy issuance.
Key Responsibilities
Review and evaluate insurance applications and supporting documentation for completeness and accuracy.
Assist in assessing risk exposures and determining eligibility in line with underwriting guidelines.
Prepare and process quotes, binders, endorsements, and renewal documentation for underwriter approval.
Communicate with brokers, agents, and clients to obtain required information and clarify submissions.
Ensure accurate and timely data entry into underwriting systems and CRM platforms.
Support compliance efforts by assisting with surplus lines tax filings, state reporting, and other regulatory requirements.
Monitor pending submissions, track deadlines, and follow up on outstanding items to maintain workflow efficiency.
Review inspection reports, flag discrepancies, and escalate underwriting concerns as needed.
Collaborate with internal teams including: operations, policy services, and accounting, to resolve issues and support client needs.
Participate in training programs and professional development to expand underwriting knowledge and career growth potential.
