UNICEF USA company history timeline

1951

Despite her inexperience, Hepburn was cast, earning rave reviews when the play opened on Broadway in 1951.

UNICEF had shipped some 8.5 million pounds of cod liver oil, plus seven million shark liver oil capsules, by 1951.

It began fundraising on its own in 1951, with the sale of greeting cards.

1952

In 1952 UNICEF asked the French painter Raoul Dufy to create a design for a UNICEF card.

1953

Audrey Hepburn starred in her first major American film, Roman Holiday, in 1953.

1954

UNICEF’s celebrity Goodwill Ambassadors initiative began in 1954 with American actor Danny Kaye, and international ambassadors since then have included Audrey Hepburn, Amitabh Bachchan, Serena Williams, and Shakira.

1968

Progress Begins with the Child: Statement by the Executive Director to the Third Committee of the General Assembly, December, 1968.

Labouisse met with Nigeria's leader, General Yakubu Gowon, in 1968, and pleaded for UNICEF helicopters to be allowed to land food in Biafra during the evening hours.

1971

Films scheduled for release in 1971 include a documentary on UNICEF, a documentary on problems of urbanization as it affects children, and one on the story of a UNICEF greeting card from design to sale.

1979

Hundreds of new organizations came into being that year, as children's problems were explored all across the globe. Its income rose 25 percent in 1979, to $285 million from $211 million a year earlier.

1980

With such efforts, it created the Women in Development Programme in 1980.

1982

In addition, UNICEF launched another health program in 1982.

1982: UNICEF begins new focus on four basic child health measures: health monitoring, breastfeeding, immunization, and hydration.

1989

UNICEF adopted the UN General Assembly Conventions on the Rights of the Child in 1989 and used it as guidance for its various programs.

1990

In 1990, UNICEF, in partnership with the World Health Organization, relaunched its breastfeeding campaign.

1993

In 1993 it began putting out a new annual report called The Progress of Nations.

1995

By 1995, UNICEF's State of the World's Children found that for 90 percent of the world's children, rates of disease and malnutrition were falling.

2002

Operating Income: $1.44 billion (2002)

2013

In 2013, floods covered almost half the country, affecting nearly 1.7 million people.

2020

Issues related to currency devaluation, consumer volume, and the perception of heighted risk lead to investors’ lack of demand and confidence, and the COVID-19 pandemic has driven these already-struggling emerging market funds to close – 51% liquidated in 2020.

2021

With the bridge funding, Bioverse can scale up work completed in 2021 – providing logistical support to community cooperatives in the Brazilian Rainforest.

In 2021, total contributions to UNICEF were US$8.1 billion.

Our top three resource partners in 2021 (by contributions received) were the Governments of the United States of America (US$884 million), Germany (US$868 million) and the European Union (US$585 million).
