Union Rescue Mission company history timeline

1891

URM was founded in 1891 by Lyman Stewart, president and founder of Union Oil Company.

1946

Union Rescue Mission was founded by Reverend Guy S. Wilson and Ray Branscum in 1946.

1950

In the 1950’s, a woman known only as Miss Ledoux, saw a great need for a mission to aid the homeless in Wichita’s East Douglas district.

1952

The organization was renamed the Twin City Mission in 1952.

1954

In 1954, the Pulaski County Baptist Association (PCBA) took over the responsibility of sponsoring the mission and hired Purl Stocktown to be the first Superintendent.

1957

In October or 1957, Purl Stockton, Frank Shamburger, Mayor Pratt Remmel and Rev.

1964

A period of remarkable debt-free growth followed which saw the addition of a medical and dental clinic in 1964 and the establishment of a thrift store shortly thereafter.

1982

In 1982 the Mission opened our women’s facility, the Dorcas House, currently sited at 823 South Park Street in Little Rock, just west of Arkansas Children’s Hospital.

1992

In 1992, the Mission introduced its “New Life Program” (now known as “Solid Ground”) for men who wanted to change their lives.

1998

But in 1998, the board authorized the purchase of a former rest home in north central Wichita and opened Haven of Hope for women and children in need of a better place to live.

2007

The first phase of families moved in on June 27, 2007.
