Union Tank Car company history timeline

1891

As part of John D. Rockefeller's innovative scheme to avoid state antitrust measures, Union Tank Car was incorporated in New Jersey in 1891 as a subsidiary of the newly incorporated Standard Oil Trust.

Since 1891, Union Tank Car Company, along with its Canadian affiliate Procor, has provided high-quality equipment and comprehensive tank car services to our customers throughout North America.

1891 Union Tank Line is formed to operate the Standard Oil Company tank car fleet.

1931

In 1931, it began shipping chemicals and producing tank cars.

1952

1952 Union Tank Car Company increases North American footprint through formation of Canadian affiliate, Procor.

1954

1954 Union Tank Car Company introduces significant tank car design improvements, eliminating under frames, tank bands, running boards and expansion domes.

1957

1957 Union Tank Car Company begins to build tank cars through partnership with Graver Tank.

1958

Louis, Another, the Union Tank Car Company’s dome, was built in 1958 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and, at the time of its construction, was the largest clear-span structure in existence, 384 feet (117 metres) in diameter and 116 feet (35 metres) in height.

1967

1967 Union Tank Car Company introduced the Funnel Flow car design, which greatly improved speed and completeness of unloading.

1968

1968 TransUnion Corp. is created as the parent holding company of Union Tank Car Company, Procor and a variety of other businesses.

1969

1969 Union Tank Car Company opens its first manufacturing plant in East Chicago, Indiana.

1978

1978 Union Tank Car Company introduces mobile tank car repair capabilities.

1981

Trans Union Corp. and its subsidiaries (UTCC included) were purchased by the Chicago-based Marmon Group investment company in 1981.

1995

1995 Union Tank Car Company increases production capacity by 30 percent with the purchase of a manufacturing plant in Sheldon, Texas.

2006

2006 Union Tank Car Company opens a new, state-of-the-art, tank car manufacturing plant in Alexandria, Louisiana, significantly expanding production capacity.

2008

2008 Berkshire Hathaway purchased the Marmon Group, which included Union Tank Car Company.

2013

2013 Berkshire Hathaway purchases the Marmon Group, which includes Union Tank Car Company.

2017

2017 Upgrades and modernization to the Texarkana, Arkansas, facility create the largest full-service repair shop in Union Tank Car Company's shop network.
