United was founded in 1949 by people just like you who believed in the values of the community and who believed in service to one another.
NHECU formed in 1949 with eight employees and volunteers who handled the transactions.
MidValley Federal Credit Union originally opened in 1950 as a MidValley community-based financial institution.
Credit Union One was founded in 1951 to serve Safeway Supermarkets, the Utah Transit Authority, the Union Pacific Railroad and several other associated groups.
Originally founded in 1952 as the Fort Douglas VA Hospital Federal Credit Union, the credit union began serving members out of a small room inside the VA Medical Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.
By 1955, WEFCU’s assets reached $1 million.
By 1958, assets doubled to $2 million.
Grantsville Federal Credit Union (GFCU) was originally founded in 1959 to serve the residents of Grantsville, Rush Valley, Lake Point, and Wendover cities.
BluesPlus Federal Credit Union was founded in 1961 to serve the members of Regence Blue Cross Blue Shield of Utah.
1962 – Moved out of the Whirlpool plant into our first branch.
1975 the credit union moved once again to the corner building attached to the local bowling alley, the grocery store and the post office; where it resides today.
In 1977 Soldier Creek Coal Company and the residents of Sunnyside and East Carbon were added to the field of membership.
1978 – Branch expands to new location at 2900 S. State St in St Joseph, MI.
Big Valley Federal Credit Union was founded in 1978 to serve the members of the AUB organization.
In 1989 a name change was requested due to Kaiser Steel Coal Company filing bankruptcy.
1991 – Name changes to First Resource Federal Credit Union.
The credit union saw many changes over the years, expanding its charter to include all of Tooele County in 2002, and moving locations twice.
In 2003 an expansion to the field of membership included all the residents of Emery County.
2006 – United merges with First Resource Federal Credit Union.
BluesPlus and VAMCU completed their merger on January 1, 2007 and together formed American United.
The Morongo Branch of the First Californian Division was opened on February 23, 2009 and operates to serve the members of the Morongo Band of Mission Indians and their employees.
2009 – United acquires Clearstar Financial Credit Union in Reno, NV.
The merger with American United was finalized on January 1, 2011.
Due to restructuring of the Regence offices and a desire to focus more on the community at large, the credit union decided to relocate the BluesPlus branch on May 1, 2011 to the now renamed Fort Union branch, located on Fort Union Boulevard.
2011 – United acquires Griffith Savings Bank, Griffith, IN.
As of 2012, assets reached $1.5 billion with plans in progress for an expanded corporate headquarters.
The merger between NECU and American United was finalized on October 1, 2013.
The Deseret News and American United merger was completed on November 1, 2014.
In October 2015 Lake Michigan Credit Union and United Federal Credit Union announced their intent to merge.
2015 – Opens branch in Springdale, AR.
The expanded charter was approved in January 2016, paving the road for the merger, which occurred on April 1, 2016.
2016 – Assets of $2 billion and 150,000 members; opens branches in Carson City, NV, and Asheville, NC.
In 2016 the credit union was excited to move the Morongo Branch to a new branch office located near the Morongo Casino Resort and Spa.
2018 – Opens branches in South Bend/Mishawaka, IN.
2019 – Opens four new branches (Springdale and Rogers, AR; Granger and Mishawaka, IN).
United moved corporate headquarters in December 2020 with the completion of a renovation project at 150 Hilltop Road in St Joseph, Michigan which was a former Whirlpool Corporation corporate building.
2020 2020 – Opened Southpark Meadows branch 2020 – Named Austin’s top mortgage company and credit union by the Austin Business Journal for the fifth year in a row 2020 – Opened Kyle branch 2020 – UFCU fosters the “House that Credit Unions Built” with Habitat for Humanity
Two mergers occurred in 2021 when United acquired a branch in Springdale, Arkansas from Truity Credit Union in February, and completed its acquisition of Edgewater Bank in St Joseph, Michigan in April.
