United Hospital District is looking for a 1.0 (80 hrs/pp) Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS)/Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT). This position is for a generalist who will be responsible for sample collection and processing and performing various tests on patient samples in the following areas of the lab: Hematology, Chemistry, Coagulation, Microbiology, and Blood bank. The MLS/MT/MLT will follow standard operating procedures to ensure laboratory safety, quality and regulatory requirements are met. They will need to be able to collaborate with other departments and serve as a laboratory resource to other professionals/departments.
Essential Functions:
Accurately performs and reports waived, moderate and high-complexity tests.
Maintains in-depth knowledge of all laboratory procedures performed.
Performs preventative and corrective maintenance on Laboratory analyzers and instruments.
Interprets results for accuracy, completion, and correlation with physiological condition; correct any problems or refer to manager or Lab Director.
Recognizes and reports abnormal results, report critical values to appropriate nurse or provider within specified time frame, refer implausible results to manager or Lab Director.
Maintains a working knowledge of reagent stability and storage.
Performs venipuncture, fingerstick, or heelstick on patients by choosing appropriate site and device, with the ability to assess and react effectively to the unique needs of each patient.
Performs EKG's on patients.
Evaluates the acceptability of specimens within appropriate guidelines and ensure that unacceptable specimens are rejected and recollected within appropriate time frames.
Sets work priorities to accommodate stat, critical, and routine testing, with the ability to perform Lab testing on several patients simultaneously.
Performs QC and calibrations as assigned and take appropriate remedial action on waived, moderate, and high-complexity Lab tests, notifying the manager of any discrepancies.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent, plus graduation from an accredited school with a bachelor's degree in Medical Technology/Medical Laboratory Science or equivalent OR
Graduation from an accredited Medical Laboratory Technician school.
Certification by ASCP or equivalent.
Schedule:
This is a 1.0 position, 8-hour shifts, 80 hours per pay period. Rotating day shift hours, every 4th weekend/holiday.

JOB SUMMARY:
Performs medical laboratory tests, procedures, experiments, and analyses to provide data for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease.
JOB DUTIES:
Understand and use scientific and technical language and symbols.
Recognize slight differences in shape, color, and texture.
Use eyes, hands and fingers to operate delicate and sensitive equipment.
Work precisely and accurately.
Follow technical instructions which may be oral, written, or in the form of charts or drawings.
Use measurable and verifiable information for making decisions or judgments.
Collects and processes all specimen types.
Participates in proficiency testing.
Ensures that patient results are reported correctly and seek help when corrective action is needed.
Follows all quality control and patient reporting processes.
Completes competency assessment.
Competent with the LIS and HER systems.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or Bachelor's degree in Medical Lab Science.
2. Eligible for ASCP or equivalent (must obtain within 12-months of hire) required.
3. Good interpersonal communication skills.
4. Demonstrated ability to follow and adhere to Grand Itasca Clinic and Hospital policies, vision, mission and values.
5. Maintains reliable and consistent attendance.

Qualifications:

Must pass the State of Minnesota X-ray operator's test within six months of hire date.

Position Overview
Under the direction of the Laboratory Manager, the Medical Laboratory Technician performs testing across all areas of the lab and ensures equipment is properly maintained. This role requires the ability to work independently, especially during on-call hours, while complying with CLIA regulations and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
Perform testing, specimen handling, and result reporting in accordance with lab policies
Maintain accurate records, including quality control and proficiency testing
Identify, correct, or report issues affecting test performance
Adhere to safety and compliance standards
Participate in lab quality assurance, peer review, and competency testing
Teach students and contribute to ongoing improvement initiatives
Maintain strong communication and teamwork with healthcare staff
Participate in on-call coverage and hospital education programs
Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Education: Associate degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution
Certification: Certified by ASCP or NCA as a Medical Laboratory Technician; Current CPR certification
Experience: Prior lab experience preferred but not required
Skills: Basic computer knowledge; strong decision-making and accountability; effective communication and collaboration
