A Brief Overview
Assists the physician and nursing staff both in the Operating Room and Clinic with procedures and patient care as needed.
What you will do
Prepares the Operating Room for surgical procedures in a timely fashion. This may include, not be limited to: organizing equipment and needed instruments; setting up quickly and accurately for emergency cases; assuring proper and adequate equipment for all cases.
Assists the surgeon as the first or second scrub person during surgical procedures. Maintains a sterile field at all times in the procedure area. Maintains efficiency in handling surgical instruments at physician's request. Verifies specimens with surgeons and nurses.
Assists the circulating nurse to account for all instruments, needles, and sponges involved with the surgical procedure.
Achieves and maintains working knowledge of all OR machinery and equipment used on the sterile field (i.e., lasers, scope equipment, and electric and nitrogen motors).
Receives and verifies correct implants for all surgical procedures (i.e., grafts, orthopedic hardware, allograft etc.).
Assists with on-the-job training and orientation of new staff and students.
Assists in transporting of patients to the O.R. when necessary.
Performs decontamination, assembly and sterilization, according to Infection Control and established QA monitoring guidelines as demonstrated by annual competency review.
Operates sterilization equipment which includes: steam and hydrogen peroxide sterilizers, ultrasonic cleaner, washer/sterilizer, and automated cart washer. Operates equipment according to manufacturer operational directions and in a manner that ensures the safety of the operator as demonstrated by annual competency review.
Utilizes desktop and laptop computers and handheld PDA for instrument decontamination, assembly and tracking functions.

A Brief Overview
Accountable for providing high quality professional care to patients and families under the supervision of the Surgery Leader and/or Surgeon within the surgical suites and other clinical areas within their scope of practice.
What you will do
Assists surgeon within the scope of competency and standards of practice. Utilizes techniques of infection control/universal precautions. Washes and sterilizes equipment and keeps a clean operating room.
Rotates in SPD area cleaning & sterilizing instruments for OR, floors, ER, & clinics.
Updates preference cards to ensure all team members can perform procedures as per surgeon requests.
Complies with regulatory requirements, policies, procedure, and standards of practice.
Verifies patient identity. Verifies operative procedure, operative site, surgeon, and consent.
Applies and monitors the principles of aseptic technique throughout the intraoperative period.
Performs sponge, needle and instrument counts according to policy procedure.
Participates in the evaluation of new supplies, equipment and/or instruments.
Places equipment and supplies in operating room and arranges instruments according to instructions.

Position Overview:
The Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) is a health care professional who provides specific services in the Surgery Department under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN). The CST is active in the patient care process and collaborates with the RN to deliver quality and safe health care. The CST understands the surgery environment and patient care process. They provide care while meeting physical, psychological, social, spiritual, and educational needs of the patient and family. The CST collaborates with the RN to modify the plan of care based on the needs of the patient and reports changes in the patient's condition to the RN.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
* Keeps updated on current patient care practice, medications, and legal issues.
* Follows best practice recommendations including but not limited to: AORN, AST, Perioperative Guidelines and organization wide policies and procedures.
* Works closely with the surgeon while recognizing surgeon preferences and preference card details.
* In coordination with the RN, assembles the necessary instruments, supplies, and equipment for the surgical procedure. Checks that all equipment is functioning properly before use. Notifies RN of defects, removes defective equipment from the patient care area, labels and documents defect and need for repair in order to maintain a safe environment.
* Practices safe site surgery techniques including but not limited to time out standard work and stops the line when safety issues or concerns with patient care occur.
* Performs sponge, needle, and instrument counts with the RN in accordance to policy/procedure.
* Consults with the RN to revise surgeon preference cards.
* Demonstrates an understanding of surgical Applies knowledge to set up cases by pre-operative scrubbing, gowning, gloving, instrumentation, sutures, assisting surgeons with gowning and gloving, draping patients, and/or assisting surgeon with draping; intra-operative coordinating and passing of instrumentation and being alert to the needs of the surgeon, post-operative drape removal from patient, removal of contaminated instruments and transport to the decontamination room for processing, safe disposal of all sharps, and proper disposal of trash and linen.
* Is constantly vigilant to the safety needs of the patient and takes necessary precautions as warranted.
* Follows recommended infection control/prevention procedures.
* Follows department specific policies, procedures, standard work and assists in updating the standard work content as needed.
* Understands the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon.
* Has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and is vigilant for maintenance of the sterile field.

* Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization.

* Review the patient's chart, identifies patient, verifies surgery to be performed with consent forms, and brings the patient to the assigned operating room.
* Assists with transferring patient to the operating room table.
* Monitors the comfort of the patient and provides verbal and tactile reassurance to the patient.
* Assists with positioning the patient, using appropriate equipment and anatomical principles to avoid patient injury.
* Assists with applying tourniquets and monitors before the procedure.
* Anticipates additional supplies needed during the procedure.
* Attends focus board and mandatory staff meetings and completes educational requirements of Winona Health.

Surgical Aide - Twin Cities Orthopedics

The Surgical Aide is responsible for the delivery of optimum quality care to patients and providing assistance in all areas of the Surgery Center. This is a full-time position working Monday - Friday, shift vary during OR operating hours out of our Eagan Orthopedic Surgery Center.
Twin Cities Orthopedics is an operating division of Infinite Health Collaborative (i-Health), a group of local medical practices, owned and led by its physicians, on a mission to give patients more control over their healthcare.
Essential Functions:
* Knowledgeable of the functions of the Surgery Center and completes duties within the assigned area. Floats readily between all areas as needed.
* Assists with picking supplies, instrumentation, and equipment for surgical cases (based on surgeon preference cards), as needed.
* Assists with turnover of Operating Room (OR).
* Assists in the safe transfer of the patient from the OR table, surgery cart or wheelchair to any other appropriate patient conveyance as needed.
* Assists with Anesthesia turnover by cleaning and restocking equipment and anesthesia carts as needed.
* Initiates and independently follows all cleaning checklists and restocking of all patient care and work areas. Assists in maintaining inventory levels throughout the center.
* Assists in the Sterile Processing Department, as necessary.
* Assists RN with local monitoring of patient vitals, as needed.
* Plans and utilizes resources efficiently to prioritize and complete their tasks in a timely manner while providing safe and individualized patient care.
* Prioritizes and provides care based on the individualized plan of care, flexible with staffing needs and assigned duties of the surgery center.
* Provides care and supplies based on identified needs and in a timely, efficient and safe manner. Demonstrates appropriate knowledge of special needs for various age groups including child, adolescent, adult and geriatric when providing perioperative experience and for multispecialty procedures.
* Collaborates with other disciplines to maximize patient outcomes and ensure a smooth flow of the surgical experience.
* Applies principles of aseptic technique, standard and transmission precautions.
* Performs activities in a timely manner to not cause delays within the department. Seeks assistance with assignments as needed.
* Follows proper channels of communication and informs department managers of unit activity, patient condition, and personnel concerns.
* Accountable for reporting occurrences through the center's established reporting process related to employee and/or patient/visitor events.
* Fosters the developmental and educational process of self, colleagues, orientees and students (includes functioning as a preceptor, as needed).
* Participates in acceptable continuing education, fostering career and skill development including meeting departmental continuing education requirements.
* Assists in managing controllable costs by the proper, non-wasteful use of Surgery Center resources.
* Any and all other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience Requirements:
* High School diploma/GED or equivalent.
* Current BLS certification or completed upon hire.
