United Radio company history timeline

1923

Initially AT&T claimed that its patent rights gave it a monopoly over United States radio advertising, but a 1923 industry settlement paved the way for other stations to begin to sell time.

United Radio was established in 1923 by Jacob H. Rubenstein, a self-taught engineer and inventor who had a great passion for electronics and a strong desire to know how everything worked.

1926

General Electric, Westinghouse and RCA responded by forming their own radio network, however, unable to match AT&T's progress, in 1926 they bought out AT&T's network operations, which were reorganized to form the National Broadcasting Company.

1927

The Radio Act of 1927 solved the problem of broadcasting stations using the same frequency and the more powerful ones drowning out less powerful ones.

1928

In 1928, CBS was purchased and reorganized by William S. Paley, a cigar company executive whose CBS career spanned more than a half-century.

1930

By 1930 nine out of ten broadcasting stations were selling advertising time.

1934

In 1934, the Mutual Broadcasting System was formed.

1935

Freedom of the Air and the Public Interest: First Amendment Rights in Broadcasting to 1935.

1948

So, in 1948, he instituted a suit against RCA and NBC, charging them with willfully infringing and inducing others to infringe on his FM patents.

1962

Arnold Rubenstein is Chairman of the Board of United Radio Inc, having been with the family business since 1962.

Jake’s younger son Arnold joined the company full time when he returned from military service in 1962.

As a member of the third generation of the Rubenstein family, Mara has led United Radio, having served as a Partner/Vice President since 1992.

After incorporating in 1993 United Radio Communications reputation has been built on dependable service at reasonable rates.

2001

2002

Trieu Tran meticulously repaired all the internal damage and the CD player is now back in my customer’s 1500-mile 2002 Camaro in “as new” condition!

2005

Phillip Rubenstein, Arnold’s son, became president of the company in 2005 and Phil’s sister Mara is the company’s vice-president and director of human resources.

2014

In 2014, the PTC branch relocated to a 123,000 square foot building that sits on 40 acres of the former Panasonic campus, right next door to one of our customers, Panasonic Automotive.

2020

November 2, 2020, marks the 100th anniversary of what is widely recognized as the first commercial radio broadcast when Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company in Pittsburgh, under the call sign KDKA, broadcast the live returns of the Harding-Cox presidential election.
