However, the company was sold to USA Waste in September 1997 at $45.42 a share.

1999

For 1999, United Rentals posted revenues of $2.23 billion, representing an 83 percent increase compared to the previous year.

2000

The company took an industry-leading position in e-commerce in February 2000 when it launched a new business-to-business web site: E-Rental Store allows customers to rent or buy equipment on a 24-hour basis, seven days a week.

2003

Boulanger and Hirni gave Blackann and a House staffer an all-expenses-paid trip to Game 1 of the 2003 World Series in exchange for amendments to the Federal Highway Bill that favored United Rentals.

2004

In 2004, the United States Securities and Exchange Commission announced it was conducting an inquiry into the accounting records of the company.

2006

On December 26, 2006, United Rentals announced the sale of their Highway Technology division to HTS Acquisition, Inc.

2007

It was also announced that Wayland Hicks, CEO, would be retiring in Summer 2007.

2011

On December 16, 2011, United Rentals and RSC Holdings, Inc. announced that they had entered into a definitive merger agreement, under which United Rentals would acquire RSC in a cash-and-stock transaction.

2012

The merger was finalized on April 30, 2012.

2013

In 2013, United Rentals moved its headquarters from Greenwich, Connecticut to Stamford, Connecticut.

It had previously made it as high as 517 in 2002, before falling back down. Based on its 2013 revenues of $4.955 billion, the company was ranked exactly 500th.

2014

On March 9, 2014, the company announced plans to acquire National Pump for $780 million.

In 2014, United Rentals was listed in the Fortune 500 for the first time.

2017

On October 4, 2017, United Rentals announced it had acquired the assets of Superior Speedie Portable Services, Inc. and Superior Logistics Services, Inc. (together "Superior Speedie"), which includes a fleet of over 8,000 portable toilets and over 130 restroom trailers.

2018

On July 2, 2018, United Rentals announced it had agreed to purchase BakerCorp International for about $715 million in cash, enhancing its Pump Solutions division.
