The army’s first engineer officers were appointed by George Washington in 1775, and in 1802 the Corps of Engineers was created as a permanent, distinct body.
Construction did not begin until 1848, and the cornerstone was laid during ceremonies on the Fourth of July.
It reopened in May 2014. It closed again after an earthquake on August 23, 2011, struck some 85 miles (137 km) southwest of Washington, D.C., damaging the monument.
