Founding of Original Company in 1869
Voorhis and Ackerson then became preoccupied with the formation of new banks, and both water charters were neglected until 1873, when local citizens and newspapers began to clamor for action.
On October 21, 1874, the system was complete and service began.
By 1879 the Water Company was unable to pay its debts, and all of Voorhis's ventures, the finances of which propped up one another, quickly failed.
In 1881 they sold Hackensack Water to a new group of investors who elected prominent Manhattan lawyer and socialite Robert W. de Forest to run the operation.

Incorporated in New York in 1893, the system had but one employee and 91 customers.
Moreover, when the Jersey City water supply became the first in the United States to use chlorination to fight bacteria in 1908, Hackensack Water quickly followed suit.
After running Hackensack Water for more than four decades, de Forest, almost 80 years old, retired in 1926.
In 1950 Hackensack Water served 105,000 customers, totaling a population of 500,000, with equipment and facilities worth $40 million.

In 1992 they accounted for $10 million in revenues.
In 1995, they merged forming United Utilities but retained their separate identities.
After several years of working together, winning 35 water services contracts in 16 states, Suez Lyonnaise and United Water entered into talks in August 1999 to arrange a French purchase of the remaining shares of United Water stock.
United Utilities continued to operate and maintain the network on behalf of Electricity Northwest until 2010, when Electricity Northwest bought the electricity network operations and maintenance arm of United Utilities to establish one Group which owns, operates, manages and maintains the network.
In 2011, United Utilities was selected as the preferred bidder by Severn Trent Water to purchase the Lake Vyrnwy estate for £11 million.
United Water's French partner estimated that the annual revenue for private water management could reach $40 billion by 2015.
